Far more birds, I.E., the more important ones, endangered/ threatened ones are killed by oilspills, and refinery polution every year so you can drive your car arround every day. Who cares about roof dwelling birds like Starlings, Crows, and Pigeons... their populations are off the charts!! If they carried diseases like rats do, We'd all be dead. Two Pigeons can breed hundreds of offspring... rats aren't even in the same ballpark Pop. wise. Care so much about birds, stop driving your car!

It looks to me like the savonius and darrieus are actually not combined but in fact are two seperate units each with its own alternator. Two units on one pole. Spinning seperately...

This is a great design concept, i'm looking into making something similar to this..possibly improving on design for my mechanical engineering senior project...

and i believe these are actually safer for birds and bats because they spin fast enough to seem like a "solid" figure whereas the HUGE 1.5 kW systems spin slow enough for birds to not see, therefore, getting killed...

Worried about birds? Using cleaner energy and destroying less of the environment will do far more good for the birds and their natural habitat, so if the odd bird gets killed by the turbine (just like the odd pedestrian by cars), should that mean we stop improving the way we produce energy?

Now if I could put 1 or 2 of these on my roof, could I be off the grid most of the time? And as for birds, honestly I think we're gonna be killing more than birds if we don't stop using fossel (?SP) fuels. Solar, wind NATURAL FREE ENERGY, easily harnessed at home, just gotta' pay through the nose for this "FREE" energy up front. $15,000 to make my house total solar (10 years of SDG&E bills for me).
