I gather that there are two teams, each with a mainframe computer with a file on it that serves as a 'flag'. Both teams are trying to hack into each-other's mainframes to get the 'flag' while simultaneously trying to beef up the security on their mainframes.
But how exactly are they supposed to hack into it? From what I understand, writing an exploit takes at least weeks of disassembling code. Also, how are they supposed to improve security?
@ross817 In oderd to improve security they patch their image OS, for example they use firewalls, or write certain scripts so that they get informed about what's going on. Now... Attacking is not exactly writing your own script. Each image has certain flaws. So, you use a certain OS or tools (usually backtrack linux) and you try to figure out which tool to use. Hope I helped, there are CTF around to try on your own pc and why not, become a security engineer.
I don't think that he mentioned oCTF in an insulting way. He basically said that for oCTF anyone that shows up at DEFCON can compete, which is true. When he talks about REAL hackers is more to give more "importance" to the traditional CTF (he didn't say oCTF participants are not hackers!), at least I understood it this way. Anyway oCTF and CTF are _completely_ different kind of games, oCTF is closer to CTF-prequals than to the DefCon/CTF game.
sorry but the guy talking should try oCTF before he says there are no REAL hackers in that game. I saw a whole room of hackers playing that game. We may not be as good as the CTF crews, but this is how you get better. Next time, try the game before you say we are not hackers. Damn n00b.

I guess one team gets 192.168.2.* and the other gets 192.168.1.*?

Networking is a mystery of science. A computer gets on a network, a computer gets off a network, you can't explain that.

@ross817 Yep! They're separated by subnet, though I'm not sure if they stuck with strict /24. Probably using 172.16.0.x /27
