What happened to the old Paxman diesel engines? Were they scrapped or are they stored somewhere, ready for someone to take them in and repurpose them?
@joffeloff I think most were scrapped/disposed of (the ones which blew up most certainly were), but some were saved by the 125 Group, so that when the HST is finally withdrawn, their ambition is to place their original engines back into the power cars for preservation purposes.
@KBRAILVIDEOS Oh, right. A noble cause. I suppose you rail fans consider it vulgar that I wanted to use these for stationary demonstration and/or tractor pulling. ^_^
@joffeloff It wouldn't bother me either way if i'm being honest, but for those reasons, try contacting Brush Traction at Loughborough - they are currently refitting the final two engines, although one blew its self up & was out of service for some time.
great sounds and great captures! whats a Paxman Valenta? i know it's the engine but are they the one with the screams? (i'm new to trainspotting so just wondering)
Yes you are correct. Although Grand Central are the only operator to have Paxman Valentas - you only have until June/July to see them as they are getting re-engined to MTU standards, then there will be no more valentas.
@KBRAILVIDEOS How come they are getting ride of Paxman Valentas for? Any reason? and whats so good about MTU's that they have to replace them for Paxman Valentas?
The reason they are getting rid of the Paxman Valentas is because they are over 30 years old, and reliability is an issue. They also no longer comply with EU Regulations for emmissons etc therefore reenginning them is the only way forward. MTU is just another Engine manufacturer, Paxman do however make another HST engine, but ONLY East Midlands trains are using these, and are known as Paxman VP185, again, these have replaced the origional Paxman Valenta's.
@KBRAILVIDEOS Thanks for the information, and that is a big shame about the Valentas, I loved the noise of them! Do the EMT's have a scream? and I hope the future will bring back some sort of screaming engines *fingers crossed* What engines do the 82's and 91's use? I could swear I heard a 82 or 91 with a scream on it when it passed
