this really is a beautiful drawing. Is there any way you can make one telling us how to do it and the colors you use and so forth. For us beginners. This truly is amazing. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to a tutorial.
colouring techniques are all in your head.(psychological) You learn this if you take art careers in high school, or an art introduction course. Most beginning artists have trouble filtering out all the pre-programmed shapes & colours your head easily remembers. To be a true artist is to master the art of observation. People can tell you what colours to use but you may not be able to apply that in another project, say, where the lighting is slightly different.
to promise169, Hobby Lobby - hobbylobby com - sells blending sticks made of rolled paper that work equally well without burning your finger.... I just did not have any on hand at the time I did this one. You can also use Q-tips, but they leave cotton hairs and fall apart quickly... Ladies sponge tipped blenders - Walmart cosmetic section - also work well but cost more per each. Hope this helps. Have fun with it... that's what makes it great! GG
@born2live ---- The junior (children's) oil pastels have less pigment in them (more filler), but the reviews are pretty good on Sukura brand (google "junior oil pastel review")
@GaryGarrett Gary, i am into the blending colors type, so i am thinking of getting soft pastels, and a pastel pencil, ive heard that soft pastels are twice the blendable than oil pastels is that true ?
the cheaper the pastel, the harder it is to mess up, it reacts a lot more like a crayon rather than a paint or charcoal, ie. good for practising colour&blending techniques but they are much harder to blend, unless you use an extender pastel before hand to add oil/flexibility.. cheap ones are the way to go if you are still a developing artist because you learn line, shaping, layering & blending techniques before you waste money on a good set. It isn't the pastel that makes the artist.
@IHeArTrOcK20 not necessarily.... you might have to press a little harder to get more color on the paper. Good luck with it... above all, have fun with it.. :-)
Hey, Gary. I'm not new to pastels, per-say, but more of a crayon type of artist. I have done quite a few actually and one of my drawings (an experiment gone bad) was a total disaster because i switched from crayon to pastel. Unexpected problems occurred because it was more....different? I am facing a dilemma right now because in art class we are creating folders (childish but interesting) and the crayon isn't going on well enough to "stick" the way pastel does. How do you do a nice gradation?
@heartachingpain hi! pastels were "invented" by the impressionist painters and are designed to be laid down in short strokes side by side. You can blend the colors with your finger or a paper blending stick. hope this helps, thanks for watching! :-)
Gary, have you ever painted a roman type archway with a fountain in the middle? I have a painting signed Garret, and I'm trying to figure out who painted it.

Hi, Really loved the way you did the lansdcape without any initial sketch. I am new to this medium and was finding it difficult to overlap colors and blend them, but now I know how to go about with them. Thanks a ton! I superlike this simple demo of yours :))
Gary, thanks for this demo. I am new to this medium and I would like to know how you successfully applied the black branches over top of the previously laid down colour? When I try to apply like this the colour blends with the colour below. For instance, I was doing a tree study and the branch was a mix of grey, off yellow, and brown with white highlights. When I tried to apply the white highlights it mixed with the colour below and just looked awful. Do you fix it first? I use Mungyo Gallery.
@earthabbey Hi, thanks for watching. The color underneath was not too heavy. Also, some brands are softer than others so I will use a soft one over previous colors. If you still get mixing, then scrape off some of the color in the area you want new color and apply the new color... you'll find it goes on better that way. Mungyo makes several desities, but I have 7 or 8 brands I use all on the same painting, also adds to color variety. Hope this helps... best of luck! gg
@GaryGarrett Hey thank you for replying so quickly!I never thought of scraping. I've had such a hard time with making definite lines (like for the branches or edges of the tree trunk) but you really got me thinking now. Thank you!

i just uploaded a video of an oil painting that took me 5 months to finish.
i would like to get some feedback on it. so if everyone that reads this could check it out and let me know what you think it would help me out! the video is called -- monumental oil painting- from start to finish. thanks everyone!
incredible, truly incredible...you just helped me learn a new technique to drawing trees...which I'm doing for my AP studio portfolio (mentioned in a comment below somewhere) Well, you've surely inspired me a bit!
Thank you. I am very happy that my videos are helping and inspiring, as that is their only purpose. The music is my cedar acoustic guitar recorded on 4 stereo tracks on my GNX4. I wish the very best for you and your class in your pastel paintings. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave such an inspiring comment.
To my knowledge, Craypas are the original oil pastels. I have heard they are the best as they have more pigment than less expensive oil pastels. My experience has shown there is not a tremendous amount of difference among cheap and expensive oil pastels. So, as long as it states "lightfast" on the box, i buy based on individual colors in that box. I am assuming that you are aware of the differences of chalk pastels and oil pastels. I hope this helps, thanks for watching.
Mr. Gary, my name is Kimberly, I'm on visual art curse. I'ld like to tell you how amazing you are first of all.. It's unbelievble great your tecnique... I would ask you, if you don't mind please, to teach me something, I'm new in oil pastel material, I would like to know more and do more. So just please, e-mail me by youtube. I would apreciate. Hugs and regards, from Portugal.
PLEASE DO NOT FEEL THAT WAY! wE all GO THRU THAT FEELING! Remember... We ALL drew stick people in school also. I've just been doing it longer (50+ years).Keep your distance objects light and towards the blue side, foreground dark, and your shadows "pointing" to your light source... and above all... paint to please YOURSELF and no others. Keep working it until you are happy with it, walk away from it when discouraged, but work later with a fresh eye. YOU CAN DO IT TOO! Thanks for watching
@PSTAC47 If you feel like you should burn your drawings now, you should look at the AP studio art stuff. When you look at artwork that is better than your own you should look and think to yourself this is how good I need to become. I hope it becomes a source of insperation. :D ...I bet he made this in 45 minutes
I bought a 60 pack of oil pastels just the other day. I've only made one picture with them so far, and I think giving a 6 year old some colored chalk would be just as effective as me drawing with the oil pastels. Not pretty. At all. >___>
lol practice makes perfect. It's not like when u get the supplies, u immediately draw like a pro. But i have confidence in ya, u'll get better. U just started.
This was beautiful to watch, you have given me some motivation to try some pastels. I always seem too busy to paint (in oils) but I am sure I could pick up some pastels (with my limited time) more easily. You are really an inspiration! Thank you for sharing.
That was awesome...how it all takes shape its great... now i feel ashamed of my little pastel paintings hehehe ... I feel like trying again and probably do something as great as yours... :)
PLEASE do not feel ashamed. Just keep adding to it and changing it until you like it. If you get too much pastel on, scrape some off and rework it. Most often, I work from sky down, and lighter distant object-darker foreground objects. keep your focal points off center. I hope this helps... keep at it YOU CAN DO IT TOO... it's not hard (I've had 60 years of practice)... go for it, just keep at it
Thank you... when I was younger i was disappointed that I lived in FLAT Florida... everything seemed bland to paint, now I am finding ways to SEE the depth here and translate that into my works. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
Gary sir i have a question with oil pastels how do you know if youre doing good? because when i start out i get mad because it looks horrible but when i watch people i say wow its bad at first then beautiful like yours
man this is just great I have a picture in my head from my home town I moved away from, there is a scnery where you look out the window and see the bay and across just green trees as well as all around Ive been tryna get that down using oil pastels, never succeeded yet but i aint quittin
That's the spirit! keep trying at it and you will succeed! remember that distant objrcts are lighter and tinted more blue... hope that helps, thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot for your answer. I am a beginner (and a foreigner) so I appreciate your advice. I use Canson paper, pretty thick and with "teeth".
Just so I got it right: you press the pastels hard instead of wiping them and use soft white on top of them. I have a 48 piece pastel and not just the white but NONE of the colors go on top of each other (they just smudge). Do I have to get softer pastels to be able to put them on top of the colors? The same brand pastels do not go on top of each other?
Be sure to lay down you lower colors softer and more gently knowing that later you will be dabbing the l;ight colors over it. Thanks again for watching
Actually it looks like 'normal' pastel, the way they blend and how you seem to smudge them so easily. I tried to follow your video by stopping it and doing similar colors and looks interesting but nothing like yours! And the white... just smudges, it does not stay white. :(
Hi Thanks for watching... the paper I am using is a good one with a medium "tooth' (a texture to help hold the pastels). When the colors are getting thicker, I DAB HARD onto the surface, turning the pastel as I go, the wiping it off if it picks up too much color. Also I use several brands, some are softer than the others, and I use the softest white (which is the cheapest) if there is a lot of color under it. I hope this helps... good luck, gg
Great video! I have the same brand oil pastells but the white does not go on top of another color, only smudges the colors together... why is that, do you know?
Wow! How gorgeous! I've never used oil pastels before, or even done any sort of artwork, but I'm thinking of taking it up. All the things I've read so far suggest making some type of "preliminary sketch" on the paper, which you then draw over, but I've noticed that you don't do this. Which way do you think is best?
Hi, thanks for watching. My "sketch" is in usually my mind... if I can see it mentally, I can put it on paper. I have been doing it this way for 40+ years. Many times, I will paint an underpainting which is the basis for the painting, but in oil pastels, it's difficult to remove any sketch lines still showing, so I dive into it and let it flow .... just have fun with it, use all your colors all over it... a little sky colors in the earth areas and vice versa... a way to add interest. :-)
Thanks, I know my work doesn't please everyone... I ould be a fool to try. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. have a great day!
Thank you... the name of the song is "Timuquana" named in honor of the indians who settled this area. It was multitrack recorded on my GNX4 then downloaded to my computer. Thanks for watching.
Excellent work. I am really impressed with how many layers you were able to achieve with the oil pastel brands you are using. Have you ever tried artist quality like NeoPastels or Senneliers? I hope you post another oil pastel vid. Great job.
At 1:19 I was using a paint brush to gently brush away the crumbles of pastel since i was doing this one flat for the camera. The brush works better than your hand as your hand can smear these small pieces into the other colors. Thanks for your interest and thatnks for watching.
Hey Gary, I'm using oil pastels on canvas and was wondering if i should use some sort of coating layer (surface prep maybe?) before applying more lighter colors on top? any advice or tips from you would be very appreciated.. thanks for posting your beautiful work on here =]
Hi and thanks for watching. If you are using the OIL pastels and not CHALK pastels, then applying a sealer or coating layer really will not help. When I apply the lighter colors over darker, I usually DAB the color on then blend them carefully. Also, you can scrape the darker color, so the layer is thinner and that can help in applying a lighter color over darker. For scraping, I like to use a small palette knife, but any instrument that gets the job done will do.
It is a beautiful painting-but it went so fast that I couldn't take it all in-the technique, brushing, etc. I do pastel portraits, but am wanting to start on landscapes. Thanks for the wonderful speedy demo.
thanks. you can pause the video, and back up the slider. The brushing was simply brushing away the "crumbs" so they would not get pressed into adjacent areas. If you do portraits, you should have no problem with landscapes. Best wishes on your pastels, thanks for watching.
What an amazing video! the picture came out wonderful. my husband just got me a crayola 200 peice set with all kinds of stuff in it. i havent used oil pastels since i was in probably middle school (im 25, lol). This helped me out alot. Thanks so much.
Wow! That was great! I'm a parent volunteer teaching composition with oil pastels to 3rd graders today. This really helpped me see the possibilities!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thanks! My wife has been a teacher since 1971! I used to do a how-to-build-guitars class for the local school's "Enlightenment Fairs"... but then changed jobs and that time luxury is no longer an option... miss it though. Thanks for watching, good luck with your class... (remember that oil pastels are just REALLY GOOD crayons) take care, good luck!
Thanks for the nice comment. The music is me and my homemade acoustic guitar, recorded multitrack using a GNX-4. It's a tune I wrote about 13 years ago. Thanks for watching.
Hi, sorry for the delay in responding... a lot going on here. The time lapse is actually at 60x so that one took an hour and 45 minutes approximately. On the cat, just draw the tips of the fur in the direction the hairs would be coming out of the skin starting at the back and working forward. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
This is beautiful and the colors are extravagant. i never use pastels, but i really think im going to start using them now. You've inspired me. keep up the amazing work.
Hi, thanks for watching! I'm just trying to show YouTube viewers my methods of achieving my end results, hoping it helps viewers to find new or different ways to paint/draw. We all are beginners at some level. Even after 35+ commercial artist years, I am learning new tricks from other YouTube artists.
Thank you for your kind words. If you buy several brand names of pastels, you'll get quite a variety of colors to blend with. Thanks for watching, and Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
WOW! i didn't know you could blend oil pastels! I read somewhere that they do not smudge well so i have been avoiding them... But after watching this i do intend to give it a go!
A question though, Did you use the Cray-Pas Expressionist throughout? In the description you write: Mungyo, and Loew Cornell oil pastels... The White pastel you use to blend looks different from the other ones in the video... (or just my eyes)
HI AND TANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS. You can blend the oil pastels with your finger, blending sticks, Q-Tips, rags, papertowels. You can also use mineral spirits on a q-tip(sparingly) to soften the applied pastels for easier blending (although I did not use that here). Also, I use several brands of pastels as there sizes and colors vary a LOT, giving me a wide choice in color and shape of each pastel. I hope this helps. thanks for watching .... the best of luck with your pastel paintings.
Hi... thanks for watching, I put it on rather heavily in dabs. These were fresh oil pastels, dont know if that would make a difference, but also, my paper has some "tooth" to it, if you try smearing on a smooth paper, it will not work as well. Let me know if this helps, if not I'll try again to help. Take care, stay creative!!
Well, i got some proper pastel paper and i still cannot get the texture that you are getting, maybe i am thinking, would like a charcoal pastel be better?,cheers
Great pickin' and paintin'. More of both.

samsaragx 2 years ago

I think it's either thinner to make the tree blend a bit better or it's some form of fixative which helps preserve the image on the paper.

It is AMAZING that it started out as a few strokes, into this beautiful work of art. I wish I could use oils as well.
Soundoreo 2 years ago
Thanks a lot for your answer. I am a beginner (and a foreigner) so I appreciate your advice. I use Canson paper, pretty thick and with "teeth".
Just so I got it right: you press the pastels hard instead of wiping them and use soft white on top of them. I have a 48 piece pastel and not just the white but NONE of the colors go on top of each other (they just smudge). Do I have to get softer pastels to be able to put them on top of the colors? The same brand pastels do not go on top of each other?
Ghopper18 2 years ago
Be sure to lay down you lower colors softer and more gently knowing that later you will be dabbing the l;ight colors over it. Thanks again for watching
GaryGarrett 2 years ago
Actually it looks like 'normal' pastel, the way they blend and how you seem to smudge them so easily. I tried to follow your video by stopping it and doing similar colors and looks interesting but nothing like yours! And the white... just smudges, it does not stay white. :(
Ghopper18 2 years ago
Hi Thanks for watching... the paper I am using is a good one with a medium "tooth' (a texture to help hold the pastels). When the colors are getting thicker, I DAB HARD onto the surface, turning the pastel as I go, the wiping it off if it picks up too much color. Also I use several brands, some are softer than the others, and I use the softest white (which is the cheapest) if there is a lot of color under it. I hope this helps... good luck, gg
GaryGarrett 2 years ago
Great video! I have the same brand oil pastells but the white does not go on top of another color, only smudges the colors together... why is that, do you know?
Ghopper18 2 years ago
Lovely painting! Keep up the amazing work. :)
GreeninMissouri 2 years ago
Hi, thanks for watching. My "sketch" is in usually my mind... if I can see it mentally, I can put it on paper. I have been doing it this way for 40+ years. Many times, I will paint an underpainting which is the basis for the painting, but in oil pastels, it's difficult to remove any sketch lines still showing, so I dive into it and let it flow .... just have fun with it, use all your colors all over it... a little sky colors in the earth areas and vice versa... a way to add interest. :-)
GaryGarrett 2 years ago
Nice, but I don't like the foreground that much...har-d-har-har! Is that guy serious? Some people have nothing better to do...
I love it all, the music the painting, that you took the time to share it, and in only 2:04 minutes--a masterpiece. "It's a free concert from now on!"

Gary,
Excellent work. I am really impressed with how many layers you were able to achieve with the oil pastel brands you are using. Have you ever tried artist quality like NeoPastels or Senneliers? I hope you post another oil pastel vid. Great job.

what are you doing at 1:19
IRSFRAUDEXPOSED 3 years ago
At 1:19 I was using a paint brush to gently brush away the crumbles of pastel since i was doing this one flat for the camera. The brush works better than your hand as your hand can smear these small pieces into the other colors. Thanks for your interest and thatnks for watching.

Hey Gary, I'm using oil pastels on canvas and was wondering if i should use some sort of coating layer (surface prep maybe?) before applying more lighter colors on top? any advice or tips from you would be very appreciated.. thanks for posting your beautiful work on here =]
banana2510 3 years ago
Hi and thanks for watching. If you are using the OIL pastels and not CHALK pastels, then applying a sealer or coating layer really will not help. When I apply the lighter colors over darker, I usually DAB the color on then blend them carefully. Also, you can scrape the darker color, so the layer is thinner and that can help in applying a lighter color over darker. For scraping, I like to use a small palette knife, but any instrument that gets the job done will do.
Thanks ... happy pastelling!

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. It was most helpful =]
banana2510 3 years ago
It is a beautiful painting-but it went so fast that I couldn't take it all in-the technique, brushing, etc. I do pastel portraits, but am wanting to start on landscapes. Thanks for the wonderful speedy demo.
evelyn99 3 years ago
thanks. you can pause the video, and back up the slider. The brushing was simply brushing away the "crumbs" so they would not get pressed into adjacent areas. If you do portraits, you should have no problem with landscapes. Best wishes on your pastels, thanks for watching.

that is amazing~ how long did it take u to do this? In art I am taking a pastel class and we are drawing cats could u possibly draw one?
bananabaggy94 3 years ago
Hi, sorry for the delay in responding... a lot going on here. The time lapse is actually at 60x so that one took an hour and 45 minutes approximately. On the cat, just draw the tips of the fur in the direction the hairs would be coming out of the skin starting at the back and working forward. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Your way with pastels is wonderful--I've enjoyed your time lapse demo very much.

Hi, thanks for watching! I'm just trying to show YouTube viewers my methods of achieving my end results, hoping it helps viewers to find new or different ways to paint/draw. ghostie7790 3 years ago
Thank you for your kind words. If you buy several brand names of pastels, you'll get quite a variety of colors to blend with. Thanks for watching, and Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
GaryGarrett 3 years ago
WOW! i didn't know you could blend oil pastels!
Anyway great video! very useful and inspiring
10teeleaf 3 years ago
HI AND TANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS. You can blend the oil pastels with your finger, blending sticks, Q-Tips, rags, papertowels. You can also use mineral spirits on a q-tip(sparingly) to soften the applied pastels for easier blending (although I did not use that here). Also, I use several brands of pastels as there sizes and colors vary a LOT, giving me a wide choice in color and shape of each pastel. I hope this helps. thanks for watching .... the best of luck with your pastel paintings.
GaryGarrett 3 years ago
Try the pastels on a non-white paper.... like a brown or grey, see if that is easier for you. Thanks for watching.

hi, how come when i use oil pastel it is not smearing in like yours, can you help please
marlowfu 3 years ago
Hi... thanks for watching, I put it on rather heavily in dabs. These were fresh oil pastels, dont know if that would make a difference, but also, my paper has some "tooth" to it, if you try smearing on a smooth paper, it will not work as well. Let me know if this helps, if not I'll try again to help. Take care, stay creative!!
GaryGarrett 3 years ago
Well, i got some proper pastel paper and i still cannot get the texture that you are getting, maybe i am thinking, would like a charcoal pastel be better?,cheers
marlowfu 3 years ago
yes- that was great. Very fast! as an artist, it was good to get a quick idea of how you used colour (dark first on midtone paper).
I would liked to know which colours and it would have been ok even a little bit slower. But great idea. thank you
