Iran's military doctrine is changing and if it comes down to a confrontation, the Iranian leadership will not be content with just beating back an attack. I think Americans would love for Iran to exist. If our country didn't feel it necessary to protect those we consider allies. Israel is kinda like our cocky little brother, and we have to beat on the people who threaten him. I think it is more a matter of principle then a worry for the US in itself. Same with N. Korea S. Korea. So Israel starts a fight because they want certain lands, and we have to bail them out when their neighbors come looking for them. Thats a bit simplified, but close.

@Keruaran I doubt that. No country but major powers would even contemplate a war with the US. In a conventional war the US can easily crush any and all militaries in the world. The only kind of war that would have any chance of succeeding would be some sort of asymetrical undeclared war or nuclear, which China or Russia would never initiate on behalf of the likes of Iran.

He does believe that the Iranians can deliver a very strong, and perhaps a lethal blow to the US forces in the region. Iran's military doctrine is not veered towards trying to match US air superiority, but to deny any bombing campaign's effectiveness through the use of a networked, multi layered air defense shield. If no bombs reach their intended targets, the US is cooked!

@edwong3 Yes we are aware, the troops in the region would be vulnerable to attacks, but the main reason we taking a different road (for now) is public opinion on the 2 ongoing wars. Everything in the US is democratic so if the public is against something is very hard for the goverment to pull it off. US has the capabilities to deal with Iran and while we discuss this here, plans are already being draw or in place for a long while.
