My Grandfather was a paratrooper, 101st airborne during the war. 2 combat drops, and combat from Normandy all the way into the Czech Republic. He holds no hate to the Germans, save the murderers in the camps and those that butchered his follows because they were a drain of resources because they were POWs. But, to hear him talk of it, you think, how did any survive even one day on the line.
Fun fact: The Greek resistance of Germany and Italy postponed both nations invasion of the Soviet Union, forcing the Axis to attack in winter, which gave the Russians the advantage. So the Greeks guaranteed the defeat of the fascists. If anyone here is descended from anyone who fought for the Allies in Greece, you've inherited the greatest legacy in the world.

The only fighting Bulgaria ever did was actually against the Germans themselves in the end of the war when the German army tried a last attempt of an assault in the balkans with everything they have left. Just for the history I want to say that during WW2 Greece was on a war with Italy, Germany and Bulgaria. What people that lived that war were saying after that, is that Italians were fighting at the battle but after that they were humans. They didn’t kill women and kinds and sometimes they were even helping starving kids with a piece of bread when they could. Exactly the opposite of Germans :(

In some cases, they only got along fairly well with the residents. In even rarer cases, they got along horribly. But, if we want to generalize, the Germans were people just like you and me, and they behaved so. The rigid dicipline within the German army kept them from loot/rape/civilian murder and other crimes commited widely by forces such as the Red Army.

Yes, of course the Germans were just people like you and me, but the soldiers in the Wehrmacht were also victorious invaders almost everywhere they went and history has shown time and again that conquerers are not kind to the conquered, especially if they resist an imposed dictatorship. Combine that with the doctrine they were fed about being superior, and despite the objections of the officers the Wehrmacht inevitably became "a criminal organisation".
Well Greece fought well, until the Germans showed up :( The Italians were a joke, but unfortunately the German army proved a bit too much for them. At least Churchill honored his promise and the British forces stayed and fought in Greece, even though it was a loosing fight. My Grandfather was on Crete in the British forces during the invasion, said there was so many German paratroopers they blocked out the sun.

Greeks surrendered when a letter came from Athens saying that the Germans have taken the city and there is no reason holding the borders anymore. And Greeks came out of the "holes" (i don't remember the actual word) and surrendered.
And the German general that was in command arrayed his troops when the Greeks where coming out to honor the fight they gave.

Also Churchill didn't exactly honor his promise;British-ANZAC troops were too few*,British objecting to,in fact denying planes delivered to Greece from the US etc.The Brits-ANZACSs stationed here fighting though are to be praised without hesitation ,without buts and have and are still indeed praised;in example in Athens Mars Field (Pedion tou Areos) beside the statue of Hellas the epigraphs ,if I recall correctly,read Britain,Australia and New Zealand, honoring these men.

This song reminds me of a dream I had when I was about 11. At that age, I knew little to nothing of Greek history or great battles. But one night, I dreamed that I was at Thermopylae, and near everything was very historically acurate and precise. The only thing that was missing was King Leonidas, until I realized that in the dream, I was King Leonidas! Then recently, I found out about a very important part of my family. They were Greeks who settled in southern Italy. Hellas forever!

My Grandfather was a paratrooper, 101st airborne during the war. 2 combat drops, and combat from Normandy all the way into the Czech Republic. He holds no hate to the Germans, save the murderers in the camps and those that butchered his follows because they were a drain of resources because they were POWs. But, to hear him talk of it, you think, how did any survive even one day on the line.

@TheUltimateAddict hey,the funny guy again.read your history books before talking:it was the germany,the bulgaria,the italy and the albanian resistance together.we were terribly outnumbered and,because the war in albania wasn't over,our lines in the borders with bulgaria and jugoslavia were not well defended.it was natural that the axis would win.but the greeks still fought both in the greek resistance,and in the middle east(they also participated in el alamein and in sicily)

The only fighting Bulgaria ever did was actually against the Germans themselves in the end of the war when the German army tried a last attempt of an assault in the balkans with everything they have left. @Memanruler Rome wasnt the capital since at least Constantine. I guess the fact that a lot of regions of Italy have nothing to do with Roman heritage lets say LOMBARDY! Or were the Lombards Romans? On other hand the Greeks were still Romans until the 15th century! The Western Half of the Empire that had Romans far more than Italy had already colapsed in 476. In most parts of the Empire it had colapse earlier.Like Gaul Britain or Hispania all places were Roman existed aswell.

Just for the history I want to say that during WW2 Greece was on a war with Italy, Germany and Bulgaria. What people that lived that war were saying after that, is that Italians were fighting at the battle but after that they were humans. They didn’t kill women and kinds and sometimes they were even helping starving kids with a piece of bread when they could. Exactly the opposite of Germans :(

In some cases, they only got along fairly well with the residents. In even rarer cases, they got along horribly. But, if we want to generalize, the Germans were people just like you and me, and they behaved so. The rigid dicipline within the German army kept them from loot/rape/civilian murder and other crimes commited widely by forces such as the Red Army.

Yes, of course the Germans were just people like you and me, but the soldiers in the Wehrmacht were also victorious invaders almost everywhere they went and history has shown time and again that conquerers are not kind to the conquered, especially if they resist an imposed dictatorship. Combine that with the doctrine they were fed about being superior, and despite the objections of the officers the Wehrmacht inevitably became "a criminal organisation".

Well Greece fought well, until the Germans showed up :( The Italians were a joke, but unfortunately the German army proved a bit too much for them. At least Churchill honored his promise and the British forces stayed and fought in Greece, even though it was a loosing fight. My Grandfather was on Crete in the British forces during the invasion, said there was so many German paratroopers they blocked out the sun.

@ozvulcan F.W.I. The German troops never passed the boarders.. The Greek army hold them for ever.. Greeks surrendered when a letter came from Athens saying that the Germans have taken the city and there is no reason holding the borders anymore. And Greeks came out of the "holes" (i don't remember the actual word) and surrendered.
And the German general that was in command arrayed his troops when the Greeks where coming out to honor the fight they gave.

This song reminds me of a dream I had when I was about 11. At that age, I knew little to nothing of Greek history or great battles. But one night, I dreamed that I was at Thermopylae, and near everything was very historically acurate and precise. The only thing that was missing was King Leonidas, until I realized that in the dream, I was King Leonidas! Then recently, I found out about a very important part of my family. They were Greeks who settled in southern Italy. Hellas forever!
