  • how to disemination ?

  • shit also makes a good fertilizer.

  • ur fag asss hole dick head

  • huh

we used to compost until all the tomato scraps yielded about 30 plants the next summer. this breaks it down a little better. we used a trash can last time...we could do the same but tilt it on its side maybe?

  • I usually just use a shovel and mix in my kitchen scraps throughout my garden where ever there's room. It just takes too long waiting for the pile to break down itself, plus it's a good source of exercise.

  • hmmm ...garden..nice idea but on the 17th floor of a council tower block in the shit end of London,no can do never assume other people have the advantages you take for granted..

  • I live in a highrise in New York City. I bought a plastic tub at the 99 cent store and drilled holes in the lid, put moist newspaper strips into it and filled with a pound of redworms bought at the farmers market. They eat like crazy and produce beautiful compost and no smell whatsoever. I give the compost to my plants and friends with yards.

  • U rock Umlaani, keep up the good work!

  • to leityndall:

I was replying to tblendell who made a flip statement about believing in Jesus and that this did not go with composting somehow. I wasn't trying to interject religion into the comments except in this reply, to say that being a Christian and being concerned about the Earth can go together. Too bad other people took offense at that. Thanks anyway!

  • I live in a New York City tenement, and I don't have a garden or plants; I've been collecting my table scraps for well over 10 years and giving it to the community garden a block away. All you need is a plastic tub with an airtight lid.

As I read in an article years ago about compost: "It's not waste reduction; it's compost production."

  • another great plant growing thing is orgonite placed around the garden it makes the plants grow very quickly

  • I really don't think you need an elaborate tumbler.... I just dig a hole an put the kitchen scraps in it. When the hole is full, I bury it and then dig a new one. It breaks down extremely quickly. Seems like the tumbler is just another thing to buy

  • A question on composting newspaper. Are the inks safe in general and specifically for a vegetable garden?

  • I'm worried about that, too. Newsprint in some countries like Malaysia is made from palm oil, so no problem there, but in the US, newspaper ink can be LEAD-based. The poisonous effects of lead are well documented, and I would encourage the Sierra Club to issue a strict warning: DO NOT COMPOST NEWSPRINT UNLESS IT IS KNOWN TO BE LEAD-FREE!

  • Most newspapers are using soy-based ink for their printing neads. It should say on the newspaper somewhere if it is soy-based, as papers like to advertise that fact (green credentials and all).

  • um...i don't celebrate earth day. i believe in jesus and jesus didn't compost. and i'm voting for McCain!!

  • Well a lot of Christians believe in Jesus AND in wise stewardship over the Earth as it states in Genesis, that God gave man stewardship. Is reflexively rejecting Earth Day, composting, etc, good stewardship? You don't have to be a liberal to support Earth Day, etc. I'm not a liberal, but support these initiatives. Read the book Crunchy Con by Rod Dreher, available at Amazon. Conservatives & Christians can support these causes too, why leave them to the liberals?

  • I don't know why your comment's getting negative reviews, except that they may not want to hear politics on a composting video, but I agree w/ you. I like to think of myself as a conservation-minded conservative. If this is God's green earth, why are we abusing it? It can handle a lot, & it has been bruised, but beating up on a bruise is not gonna help it heal. We've been given knowledge & technology to recycle & clean things up, so why aren't we doing exactly that? Answer: Laziness & apathy!

  • I don't think the tea drinking was smart.Remember teach, don't confuse, would of been nice to see it turn, and what it looks like when it is ready.

  • Thanks for this! More questions I have: how does one compost in an apartment if they have no yard of their own, and where can I take the compost to for someone to use if I can't use it myself?

  • Hello Jmaicher. I work at a college dining hall (luckily an environmentally-conscious one) where we compost or recycle almost 100% of our leftover food. Because there is no room on campus to do so, the meats and un-compostable foods get collected and given to a farmer who uses it later as pig food. The rest is sent away to be composted. Check in your area if there are any farmers, greenhouses, or even gardeners. They might gladly take your compost. Hope this helps!

  • Thanks!

  • great video! thank you!

  • I can't compost because of the wildlife. They'll get attracted to it.

  • Get a lid?

  • Big wildlife.

  • even if they eat it, it's still better then sending it to a landfill I guess

  • GO FORTH AND MAKE YOUR COMPOST! Woot! New quote of the week! Thanks Sierra Club. And for those of you that really don't know, the "tea" was a joke - its only good for your garden. :D

  • no, it's real, and you should stop hating on something good. trying smiling, it works.

  • ok, but it's my point of view. Sorry.

  • watch?v=aEIuYDP4b1s

  • u could drink it awsome yo i got to get me one of those

  • HYDROGEN on-demand is the way to go... Demand it...

    Make 3-5k a week, go to my15kprofit.c0m

  • good video thanks man.

  • Thanks! I might try to do it soon. Just need to find something to replace the tumbler.

Did you really drink the compost tea? or was that a joke?

  • just a joke. Tea would taste foul to anything but your garden.

  • Thanks for your video...I have learned quite a lot about compost.

  • cool

  • He looks so familiar. Seems saw him on a celebrity dating site called Wealthy Kiss.c o m. I'll help you guys check it out. What if it is true. That would be great.

  • nice~

  • Reading some of the comments there SURE IS SOME SICK PEOPLE ON THIS BLOODY PLANET! I say it's a good job i'm not allowed to walk around with a gun cause i'd shoot the lot of you fuckers!

  • maybe you can try...there is no harm right for trying since you so curious about it.. why not now??? its a good idea. start from you. then you tell us how its feel...

  • go ahead

  • i haven't got a garden so this is usless to meh.

  • So true! We compost and it's cut down our trash output by a huge amount!

    Happy Earth Day!

    ~Peace

P.S. Let's make Earth Day happen every day!

  • Ok about newspaper... i dont think its a good idea becouse ink used on them is full of heavy metals (I may be wrong) which will polute your garden

  • sweet vid.

  • global warming

  • good to know...the "more brown than green" thing scares me, though! o.o

  • get robots to do it

  • ppl make good compost too, oh shit, I fear I've said to much.

  • ok ppl i made an earth day video toooooooo come check it out! we all need to do our part!

  • genius idea!

  • that's so gaia.... (sorry)

    Good video and info.

  • im glad u like my vidz too.

  • I hate breeders.

  • POWER OF COMPOST!

  • Composting doesnt require mathematical equations. The chemical breakdown will happen at its own rates, so you can throw all of your waste in and it will compost on its own like it does at my house

  • Happy Earth Day!

  • ?????????????????????????????????????

  • u dont need a tumbler

  • This man is very excited about compost!

  • was that rly necessary?

  • The liquid that comes off the compost pile isnt a true tea, it's called Compost Leache. True compost tea is aerobic whereas the liquid that drains off the pile is anarobic.

The compost pile emits green house gases but those gases were going to be emited anyways with or without "composting". Composting is concentrated decay and therefore will emit concentrations of green house gases, so in reality, there's nothing but tax-free goodness when it comes to composting.

    -Hindubeef.

  • I just realized I said tax-free in the presence of the sierra club.. irony?

  • We compost here at Simplify! :)

  • GO GREEN!!

  • like ommggg sssooo exciting.

im gonna start a worm bin

  • Hey.. I'm making an animated show starting May 4th (watch my channel to check it out).. But THE POINT IS.. The production of my animation uses 60% less gasoline in comparison to most YouTUBE animations.. Check it out! And subscribe for Mother Earth's SAKE!!!

  • yay to being greeennn!!

  • Next week he'll show how to toss a salad.

  • and what if he's not?

and who cares if he is?

He's still a better person than you are.

  • I keep two big composters rotating in my back yard, which keeps the veggie garden booming evey year without any chmicals added.

But, our neighburhood attracted some rats to his sticky compost, which got them interested in our odourless setup. After years of composting, we had to stop this year because of the pests.

  • If it stinks you don't quite know what you're doing. Mine is an old shop vac. Works great and while your doing it youre not being a wasteful hippie. "I know lets throw a bunch of tires on the ocean floor to make a reef". Dumb hippies.

  • Or, better yet, let's drive around in a mid-1970's Volkwagen van that emits greenhouse gases at the same rate as a new SUV.

Unless the old van was registered in California, it would have had very limited emissions controls. But, it remains the Hippie Favourite, depsite it's poor mileage and high emissions.

  • you forgot to mention... THAT IT STINKS LIKE FUCKIN SHIT !!!!

  • mejproductions

  • lol you know what it smells like because u sucked one before.

  • you search: "cliccami mano"

    it's the first video

  • lol

  • BOOOOOOOOOOO. What the fuck Sierra club?! Marketing on the Youtube? You stink, go ask for money elsewhere.

  • hahahaha his voice is so funni

  • I couldn't stop laughing at his voice... I thought he was going to have a deep one.

  • can I just throw that stuff into the soil of my garden instead of buying the thing. It does eventually break down right

  • yes. there is a real gardening term for it, but i don't remember. haha. it works with certain weeds too (the ones that don't regrow really easily), when u just rip them out and leave htem on top. but composting is good to increase the number of microbes. a larger pile also helps keep the heat in for the highest breakdown activity.. i was turning compost over once and you could feel the heat and see the steam come out of it. it's pretty neat!

  • If you just did it into the garden, the stuff will draw nitrogen out of the soil in order to rot. That will starve the plants until the stuff is completly rotted. Not good.

But no, you don't need to buy that plastic thing he used. At the beginning of the talk, he said you can just start a pile. But on top of the ground.

  • yeah, but if it's below the ground, you can insulate it better...and u really should compost away from your plants...and you can get a lot of nitrogen from coffee grounds, which are usually free from your local coffee shop. just some thoughts.

  • Ummmm...if u use newspaper wouldn't u be putting lead into the soil??? I though that was bad for the environment???

  • actually very disgusting lol but I like how ppl pay at least a little attention to this issue.

  • wow someone is angry

dont be mad you little pissant

    your a brainwashed liberal

get the facts strait then talk to me

  • man made global warming is fake the truth will prevail

  • This video isn't even about preventing greenhouse gas emissions.

Why did you watch this video if you're against doing anything for the environment?

  • indirectly, yes. you make compost, and avoid transport of garbage, saving fuel, keeping emissions down.

  • That's absolutely true. I had already taken that into consideration, but that's not what this video is about. He's not saying we should do this because of the fuel we'll save.

  • why are those bins so expensive?

  • That's so plain: they are for rubbish! lol

  • That's what I was wondering as well.

  • Cool

    =]

  • If you have a salad can you wash the oil off?

  • Comp-ost Not com-post....

  • can you drink the tea?

  • no, that was just a joke. It isn't actually tea - just runoff from the compost - but it is a great additional fertilizer for the lawn or garden. Most compost piles just waste the liquid, which soaks into the soil beneath the pile. The tumbler is cool because it collects the liquid and you can pour it right on the garden

  • Cool. Ya know should check out channelone's going green contest. You'd probably win it

  • thanks, i appreciate this refresher course. i'm on it!still gotta love the sierra club

  • Good video :)

    Thanks for uploading

  • Great tips! You should post videos about how to use the compost in your yard/garden. A Composting for The Composting Impaired, if you will :)

  • Good vid.. I have a compost bucket in my backyard and just planted my garden yesterday. This is a great way of recycling and lower the amount you throw away in your waste basket at home.

  • is usa really this mutch behind? do u need some gay to tell u what is a compost?

  • lmao tghink so

  • i bought my girl a composter for bday.

  • hahaha, she must hate you.

  • no it's to compost the dead raccoons that line our yard.

  • becareful, she may compost you too if she doesn't like it LOL

  • I'm completely not sure what you said but it sounds retarded. Learn how to spell.

  • watch?v=8pW9PmSYzKA

    golasoo :)

  • will this work for a few bodies? One about 7 months old (it's been sitting in my basement) and one about a week old

  • i think we know who the biggest fruit is!

  • how dos this make the front page?

  • its earth day

  • watch?v=dIdRYPRLYes nice deal

  • emmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Learn how to spell you fucking moron!

  • You sound like a lot of fun.

  • Why so quick with negative comments?. He didn't mention global warming once. He is talking about helping the environment by reducing waste. If you think that all the waste we pump into the environment doesn't have a detrimental effect on the planet you are kidding yourself or seriously ill informed. Nice video NationalSierraClub.

  • can anyone say "closeted homosexual"

  • ...how do you know he's closeted?

  • compost tea!

  • I wanna start doing this this summer.. but how much does it stink? will my neighbours complain???

  • If you do it right, it will not stink. Just make sure to keep it aerated. If there is no air in there, the compost will be broken down by anaerobic bacteria, which create smelly compost. As long as you turn the pile regularly, your compost should be sweet-smelling!

  • thanks!! now i have to convince the other ppl in my house about this!! i just rent from them so it is really their call.. so sad i know lol.

  • if it is well done it doesn't smell bad it smells as the soil you get for your plants.

  • it actually doesn't smell if you aerate it well enough. otherwise anaerobiosis and fermentation (due to lack of oxygen) happens and makes weird smelling metabolites and byproducts. and growing stuff in straight up dirt vs dirt+compost does make a difference...so if u don't notice a diff, u probably have good soil to start with.

  • the problem with composting Garbage is the SMELL. man my neighbors called the Police on me because of the smell. as well as the bugs including the bees. they really did get nasty.so I agreed to not compost anymore besides. I did not see ant differance my tomatoes were the same size as though they were never given the rich top soil.

  • oh, i should have read your comment first LOL. would have answered my question!!

  • every time you put something in the compost, cover it with a layer of dirt. It will help keep the smell down (alot).

  • Perhaps the pile was too wet & not getting enough air , often that makes it more smelly. Also, if you have a stationary pile, they say it's best to bury ur food scraps a few inches down under some dry carbon material, or some of your older, pure compost. U can add some sticks into the pile vertically, as well, which u pull out later to create air channels. U want to be sure to get in there and move it around once a week, too. It's a shame u can't compost anymore, it's so great for the garden!

  • Very useful! Great explanation. Best I've seen! Thank you!
