  • This is FANTASTIC. Just now saw it and wanted to thank you for doing such a great, detailed tutorial. TFS and HUGZ.....Sherry

  • @CricketsDaughter1 Thanks Sherry! Glad you enjoyed it - I sometimes worry that I am giving TOO much instruction....have a great week. Jann

  • So inspiring...I never know where to start BUT after watching your videos my head is spinning...TFS...Sheree (Downunder)

  • @Scrapsassy1959 Sheree - you are going to have the BEST time...I can see the creative wheels spinning from here! *smile* Thanks for stopping by!

  • ohhhhhhhh Boy.........wall paper..yeah...I will be using this too...Thanks Jan!!!! Your a Blessing~~~~Joyce

  • j'aime beaucoup bravo

  • Thank you so much ,i am doing it ,and i cant believe how gorgeous, my work is .

I dont have words to thank you enough ,i am a newbie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @mariabonita15 Getting your message just MADE MY DAY! I am totally excited FOR you...there is nothing like creating something...and LOVING IT is there!?!?! I hope you just keep on "playing and creating!" You are not a "newbie" any more....you, my dear....are an ARTIST! Blessings, ~Jann

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 I belive even newbies are also artists.

  • we are twins.. you just got the BETTER gene. haha We do things so much the same. ;) Just love your stuff more hehe amazing-keep inspiring me. ;) Thank you!!!!

  • @babyblueagle1 I've always wanted a TWIN!!!!!!! I have been working on some new projects and am hoping to post some new technique videos soon! Have a great (and creative) week! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  • Thanks a lot!

  • I loved it!

Where do you buy your stamps? I live in Toronto and the only place I have found stamps is at Michaels and the variety is not great :(

Thanks for sharing, you are so creative!

  • @vkiavian Hi there - thanks for stopping by! I have collected stamps over the years from a variety of places - some through Stampin' Up! and others through on-line stores like Simon Says Stamp, Stampers Anonymous, Addicted to Rubber Stamping - and a few Etsy stores. I can usually find what I am looking for by searching Google for "Vintage Stamp XXX." Hope that helps - I know that Michaels has some good things but they only carry a few brands.

  • I was wondering if you can use old credit cards instead of key cards?

  • @hiyaamaiaa A GREAT use for them.....since it is better if I don't need to use them to spend money~

  • Amazing to watch you work. Like others here, I watched as the layers evolved thinking, "No! Don't cover that up!"

Your instincts were right every time.

I'm a bit confused abt. Mod Podge. There are so many kinds. Does it yellow? Is it sticky after it dries? Does it matter if you use the regular vs the 'Paper' variety? Great tutorial!

  • @9doves Thanks! Let's see if I can clarify the mod podge questions. I just use the plain old matte finish variety. It can be a bit tacky for the first 24 hours....but dries to a non-tacky but pliable finish after a day or so. It is NOT waterproof though. If you were to soak it in warm water it would turn milky again. But don't let that scare you -- rarely do you find yourself "wetting down" a piece of artwork. If it is going to be near water (like outside in the rain) then add a varnish.

  • What an amazing idea!!! Please please could you tell me what make are the three rubber stamps you used - thanks everso!! Crafty hugs Donna xxx

  • @theartofpapercrafts Hey Donna...I kn ow that one of the stamps I used was a Tim Holtz stamp (the dress pattern one) - the other two were gifts to me and I do not know the manufacturer. However, I have found some similar type stamps (vintage ladies) at Rubbernecker Stamps on line. Hope that helps.

  • wow, it kept going and going. and i liked each layer after layer. i've got to get me some dress patterns and tissue and wallpaper. how fun and useful. TFS.

  • @flirtini83 The hardest thing for me when I first started doing collage was covering up something that I had just painted or glued down. Once I got over that - I LOVE collage...and think it always ends up cooler when I just keep letting it build and build. Have fun!

  • I want to ask the same question as marylizart, is there a tutorial for the finished journal.

    thanks

    sandi

    love this artwork!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @oceanpoet1 Hey Sandi - I didn't do a tutorial on how to finish the book...but you can see the completed journal in a video I did called "Simplicity Journal Give Away."

  • I just so happed to have a key card I can't wait to use this technique

  • @fruitfly769 I LOVE my key cards...so easy to clean....and such a super simple tool to use....know you will have fun!

  • is there a tutorial for making a finished book? thanks...

  • OMG, I am so impressed. That is exactly what i was lacking all my life.

  • I can't say enough oh my gosh I love this idea. Modge Podge is so fun and you captured the fun in this video if it wasn't so late tonight I would start a cover tonight. Thanks so much for this awesome idea!

  • @mybedazzledtreasures So glad you had fun...I bet your inspiration will continue into daylight hours! *smile* Thanks for stopping by and for your encouragement.

  • Okay my neurotic, type A, OCD brain almost exploded watching this one but I'm still with ya! LOL I want to be "free" enough to do something like this!!! It was kind of like watching Matisse or Picaso at work! Very cool.

  • @MsTClaiborne Hey there! Thank you so much for wading through all these videos! Seriously, you could so do this. I just pretend I am 5 yrs old! And then I just make a "happy mess" then it all gets cleaned up.

  • hi this is awesome work... how long have you been doing mixed media? I want to then i chicken out... amazing stuff ur doing...

  • @123lebraz Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it -- and appreciate you taking time to tell me!

I have been doing these kinds of technique for a couple of years now. Please don't be afraid...let it just be play. WHen I first started out, I would remind myself to pretend I was 5 years old...a 5 yr old has no fear of it not being "perfect." Particularly with collage -- you CAN'T mess it up....if you don't like it...paint over it -- or put another layer of paper on top.

  • WOW that is amazing...just beautiful TFS

  • @opaladi

Thank you! It is a fun technique that lets me pretend to be 5 years old again -- and unafraid of ART!

  • WOW Jann....you are an amazing artist!!!!! I just love to watch you work!!!

  • @liveloveandSCRAP Oh Wow...what a sweet thing for you to say! I sure appreciate it...I needed a bit of encouragement tonight -- haven't felt like anything I was working on was working out properly....and your encouragement will help me to stick witih it -- and know that something will turn out! Have a great weekend.!

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 Oh my goodnes....I have been feeling the same way!!!! Just cant seem to finish anything!!! I have been trying to make tags...never made them before...and its just tough for me!!! I did take your advice and made some "glimmer mist" with Perfect Pearls and water....turned out really nice =)

  • @liveloveandSCRAP I find that feeling just comes and goes....and I go play with something else until the creativity bug comes back! So glad you tried the glimmer mist recipe! YEAH....so glad it worked for you! WIll have to go check out what you made! Have a great weekend! And as always...thanks so much for stopping by and being so encouraging!

  • Okay, wallpaper, acrylic paint, hotel room keys, glimmer mist, pattern tissue paper, mod podge, and so much more. Awesome. Stinkin' Awesome!!!

    Leslie

  • Leslie...room keys are optional! hee hee!

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 My husband keeps the room keys from the hotels he stays in. I've just shredded them in the past. Now I have to rethink that practice and keep one or two as "tools". Thanks for the tip :-)

  • That was fabulous (it was like you were conducting the music!). I don't normally like tutorials with music, but this was ideal. And your ideas are so good. This is my first viewing of your vids, but will look for more!! TFS

  • @frostynature Thanks so much...hope you enjoy and find some inspiration!

  • Melanie,

Love the Simplicity mini. Keep the videos coming! You are so talented, and your videos are clear and well made. Thanks for sharing. Watching is so much fun, but nothing else is getting done!

  • @yvloma Thank you so much for your encouragement...I am having a lot of fun sharing some of the projects I am working on -- but I need and love feedback about what I could do to make them better. I am with you on the "nothing else getting done" -- watching is so much more fun than scrubbing floors! Go figure! ha!

  • As always it is fabulous!! Your videos always inspire me. I appreciate all your time in sharing so much with us. You have a great eye!

  • Melanie...you are always so sweet and encouraging! I wish we lived closer to each other!

  • I absolutely love love love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing. You have inspired me to try these techniques.

  • @ThePattilane Thanks so much -- I am so glad to hear that you are going to try the collage technique. Just remember -- you can't make a mistake....and just let go and have FUN!

  • Wow...

    Tfs....

  • Hi Jan, I loved this video. I do decorative painting, but after watching this I'm going to repurpose my paints. TFS

    Donna.

  • @123cardmaker Oh Donan! I can't wait to see what you do! You are super talented -- so I know anything you put your hand to will be BEAUTIFUL!

  • How super cool! I love it!!! TFS, Sarah

  • Thanks for letting us watch you do the entire cover beginning to end. Seeing this is better than talking us through this especially since this is so many layers and processes. Thank you. coleen

  • Thank you Coleen! I am a visual learner so I enjoy seeing the whole scope of a process....glad that it wasn't overwhelming in this case! Have a great day!

  • Wow, this was so cool to watch...I may have to fav it cuz there were some things I didn't catch but I loved everything you did! Awesome!! xoxo Jules:)

  • Hey Jules...thank you so much for your encouragement. Please feel free to drop me a note on email if you have any quesitons - I will be happy to talk you through anything that wasn't clear.

Also...please share any ideas you have that would help me make these better.

  • I love this... I have heaps of wallpaper pieces (from a sample book) given to me ages ago and I haven't used it... now I know what for... thank you

  • That is exactly what I use -- wall paper from sample books the wallpaper store was getting ready to toss because they were outdated. I am enjoying catching up on your videos. Thanks for stopping by.

  • @WhatYouMakeIt1 - great minds think alike I guess. ;) Thenks for watching my videos too.

  • Oh my goodness I loved your tutorial, and i really want to try this...

What is Modge Podge? is it a flexible dries clear adhesive/glue?

  • Mod Podge is a decoupage medium. I know there are lots of other manufacturers...this is just one that is easy to find here in the states. Before I found out about it -- I have used watered down white glue...3 parts glue to 1 part water....and honestly, I can't tell the difference. Using Mod Podge just is quicker since I don't have to mix it up.

Yes -- it dries clear and flexible.

Thanks so much for stopping by...it means a lot to me!

  • Great tutorial , thanks a lot for sharing this tecniques

  • Thanks Sandra...it was a fun one to do. i appreciate you stopping by~!

  • Jann, OMG!!!

    Your video is AMAZING!!!

I LOVE everything you did. Can you tell me where did you get the dressform stamp? I love it and you gave me a great idea for mother's day present for my mom.

She is a wondeful seamstress and a mini with that cover will be a great gift.

Thanks again and your are my favorite!!!

    best regards,

    Wanda

  • Thanks so much for the tutorial, I love how you hold everything up to the camera so we can see which products and colors you use. I love collage pieces, it's something that I have loved since I was a child forever ago.

On another♪, the music you pick for your videos is so lovely, such a pleasure to watch your tutorials.

  • Thank you so much for your encouragement...it means so much to me! I am always curious about products -- even if I don't want to RECREATE what they are doing -- I love making a mental note of how a product works or ends up looking in the final process....glad that it doesn't seem to be distracting. I love music -- always have it playing when I am working -- have tried to make sure I use royalty free stuff for the videos...but want it to FEEL like I felt when I was creating! Glad you like it.

  • Very very very beautiful, that is amazing ,great job,i LOVE it a lot

    Thanks for sharing!!!!!

    warm hugs

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  • Natalie...thank you so much -- it is a joy to share with other artists the process almost as much as the finished project.

  • WOW!!!! that is amazing!

  • Jann That is an awesome way! I love it. How do you bind or add your paper for the inside?

    Thanks Shelley

  • I typically sew the canvas onto some felt...and then use my cropadile to punch holes in the spine and insert brads....then I use ribbon or fibers to bind the pages into the mini.

Hmmmm...maybe I need to show that process on another vid.

  • Thank you, That sounds good to me. :)

  • Thanks once again for sharing your talents, I look at you and think, 'your head should be much larger' it's so full of wonderful ideas!! Have a wonderful day, and thanks again creative lady!

    Karen

  • That made me smile Karen...It is a joy to share with other artists here -- and seriously, it is watching what others are doing that spurs new ideas in my head...

  • You have the neatest ideas!!! Thanks for these great tutorials!!!

  • Oh My Gatos!!! Jann, pick me up off the floor sister! That was AWESOME! You have sooo inspired me today! Thanks for this tutorial.

    Bean

  • Oh Bean! You just made my day! You inspire me daily -- and if I can return the favor now and again -- that means the world to me!

    Shine On!

  • great tutorial. very informative. I love the idea of having an idea then being able to adjust as the process goes on. Thank-you.... Robin

  • Robin...that is one of my favorite aspects of collage....you may have a basic idea...but as the piece begins to emerge -- you can change or adjust (add more paint or paper -- cover something up) whatever....until you like the result. Fun way to "just play!"

  • Love watching you work... Wow very clever: Walpaper as a base. TFS

  • I needed a longer sheet of paper than a 12 x 12 could provide me....and so I kind of "discovered" wallpaper samples....or leftovers. After working with them...I am loving all the other benefits of using wallpaper as a base....it was designed to do well when wet....and it remains bendable! Thanks for stopping by!

  • wonderful tutorial...very insipiring. really gets the creative juices flowing..thank you for sharing your techniques..i am off to look in the charity shops for some old sewing patterns (somehow the name simplicity pops into my head from the 70's)..please can we have some more vids like these..fabulous

  • WOW Jann this was fabulous will be off to the painters and decorators to get some wallpaper cut offs for sure lol. Then visit the second hand places for vintage patterns. I just loved this whole process from beginning to end. Thankyou so much.

    Hugs

    Michelle

  • Thanks Michelle....it was a fun piece to create. I thought I would be nervous trying it on camera....but I eventually forgot it was there and just enjoyed PLAYING! One of the best ways to get out of a creative funk for me is to just work on a collage that has no particular POINT to it! Appreciate you stopping by!

  • I have so many wallpaper books and didn't know what to do with them. Love this alot!

Did you use vinyl or paper wallpaper on this?

  • Hey Lori....I use both....if it is vinyl I will usually start with a layer of gesso -- just to make sure that the acrylic paint will stick. So glad you stopped by.

  • that was great back to basics and not a lot of frills, I love it. even i can do that. thank you

  • I sometimes think using just a couple of supplies and simple techniques can bring out the most creative pieces from us. Not that I don't enjoy detail work...but there is something very freeing about just slopping some paint around and glueing down some paper....right?

  • Beautiful collage work...loved the colors you worked in .... thank you for posting the video...love your channel...

  • Thank you so much for your encouraging words! I have only been doing videos for a short time -- so am trying to get a feel for what works...and for what is helpful to viewers!

  • I Love This. I just love the play aspect of the collage.

    TFS,

    ~Jill

  • Jill -- I SOOOO agree! It is just a "fall back" technique for me that is simple and FUN and feels like play not work! And I love the surprise of what you get when you are done! Thanks for stopping by and being so encouraging....I really appreciate it!
