  • WISH I LIVED IN THE USA, WOULD GO & SE THIS GUY EVERY DAY, SO MUCH TO LEARN FROM ONE MAN, HE IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER, I THINK HE HAS SUCH A GREAT TECHNICAL BRAIN, AND ALSO IS VERY GOOD AT STRING NEW COMPOSITIONS TOGETHER IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT

  • Pat Metheny and Eric Clapton just had a beautiful child

  • I love Carl's playing,ever since Supertramp days..

  • This man is a perfect player.

  • that is why me and the sun never meet

  • for those of you interested in intervalic phrasing, check out John Scofield's lesson on youtube, its divided in four parts.

  • Got his old video INTERVALLIC ROCK the other day - superb! Still working through it. All stuff like this.

  • Yeh seriously this guy def needs a Sig. Strat!

  • one of the best players on the planet..yet sooooo unknown!

  • its so interesting how he makes this line sound like a hybrid picking technique

  • i have a books of his exercises.they are tough. but make ur fingers flying

  • Fender? Are you hearing this? This guy needs his own signature Strat!

  • @d18dude Hell yeah!

  • @d18dude FENDER cut the KWS signature and give CARL a motherfuckin signature now!

  • @d18dude

Carl gets custom guitars build from a luthier in Germany. Check ot Tommys Music Shop if you like.

Everytime Carl is around in Germany, he gets his guitars maintained and does shows and workshops.

  • what a talented electric guitarist

  • This guy is so great. He should be much more well known!!

  • Started at the 2nd fret and went all over to the mdmdmdmd 17 fret... (smile) hahahaha

  • @Juani206 and using no scales! damn i want to learn his "improvising without scales" method :/

  • @HiImJerry8

    Well, he's talking about positions!

You need to see it this way; so he explained in several lessons: He's breaking the scale down in a creative way. So with intervals. Not just small intervals like we're used to from shredding, he's playing fifths, minor sevens, maj7, 13, 11... Intervals are the key. But he's one of the guys who don't think that much in arpeggios. Some see just arpeggios around the neck, others see the scales broken down. I don't know, both is quite interesting! =)

  • I really appreciate the concept of mixing the familiar with modern sounds

  • i met him yesterday

  • Well... maybe not Pat Metheny; hehe

  • Wish I could play like this guy.

  • Carl say's the 14th fret is where" F#minorpanatana hit's" that's great stuff. 3:37

  • 1st time I''ve ever heard of him.

  • the wide interval part at time 2:37 or so and in general is similar to Pat Metheny's song Bright size Life

  • he's right! on the BEST nights i get to improvise .. tops ... 15-30% of the time .... wish it was more

  • Oh, Mr. Verheyen, how I admire you so.

  • awesome tips on creating lines

  • wow

  • Carl Verheyen is great.

  • Awesome tone

  • No.

  • The stair step idea that he talked about is straight out of the main lick of Pat Metheny's Bright Sized Life with Jaco Pastorius....

  • ya right sped up carl Verheyen is the best studio guitar player in hollywood

he has spent like 8 hour days on guitar everyday for like 30 years

  • NO, U!

  • Good teacher

  • its missing the 17th fret inlay

  • While a lot of players can be identified by their choice of notes (Pat Metheny pops to mind), I'd say it's the timing, phrasing, dynamics and tone that define the sound of different players. That same line played by, say, Guthrie Govan, would not sound anything like Carl -- and that's the beauty of music!

  • Well said my man!

  • i got to get a free lesson from this guy last saturday

  • great lesson man!!!

  • a part of this lick sounds like the opening bar of Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life tune.

  • at 2:37

  • yeah that struck me too : )

  • Where's this MI At????

  • Hollywood, CA.

  • I think Carl has the nice'st tone. Best blues player I've ever seen.

  • Thankfully, MI just got some more hi gain amps... The new Bogner Alchemist is pretty sweet...

  • Do I see a Fender Metal Head head and cabinet in the background? Are they any good?

  • Yeah almost all the amps at that school are fender. Just recentley a dual rectafier came in. But i personally used to have a metal head... there aight. But definently not great.

  • I just got accepted to the Bachelor Degree program for GIT. So far cost is the only concern, but when that's covered, I'm definitely going!

  • congrats! hope you are eventually able to attend :)

  • Yeah man i go there right now, its pretty awesome. I hope you can go.

  • wich color is that strat? it seems an aged turquoise...Great color anyway.

  • It´s a colot called teal green. I had a strat just like that time ago.

  • thank you

  • Carl Your tone is Heaven to my ears

  • incredible tone

  • but he is awesome, lol

  • He. Is. Fucking. Awesome.

  • no thanks :)

  • that stuff at 3:13 makes my ears hurt, kinda trebley

  • yah hes amazing, just unreal, nice tone, i could almost puke, and sounds like some kind of redneck banjo playing, lol

  • there is no dot on the 17th frett, strange

  • very vital information from an experienced pro

    and a sympathic musical person : )

this is platinum gold diamonds ! ! !

  • that tone is fucking great

  • does this type of playing need you to memorise the entire fretboard? i normally use boxes as reference... and the licks i play sound very dull. some help here please?

  • youll get there, im still not. i dont think that boxes are really legitimate, they are just ways to play cliched riffs, but when youre looking at the fretboard, just see each box, and focus on linking them rather than being stuck in them.

  • ok tks so much.

  • wow incredible player and teacher!

  • 2:38 sounds like bright size life by the master metheny!! LOL anyway I love his playing!!

  • do you think fingerings of the scale is needed for this kind of playing?

  • it's less of a box sclae type thing as it is knowing the notes on the guitar and how they relate to each other, so that you can freely move around the neck and stay in the key (in this case F#m)

  • yes, you need to know where each note is on the keyboard

  • i'm sorry i can't cope up...

  • hah, i failed. i meant fretboard

  • hahaha memorization...

  • i'm learning the fretboard now.. day at a time.. i guess some day i'll stop forgetting it. :)

  • That run down the scale @ 3:30 is amazing!!!

Lessons from this dude & playes like him would change my life.

I wanna go to M.I. SOOOOoooOoooooOooOOOO BBBBAAAAADDDD!!!!

Carl Verheyen.....your a unbelivible guitar player

  • You can easily join workshops with him. Just check out the locations he tours to. He comes to Germany almost every year and i took a few already. They are about 200 bucks with a group of just 8 to 10 people for a whole day!

  • All of those fourths and fifths are like Joe Diorio's Intervallic Designs for the 21st Century.

  • His phrasing really reminds me of Eric Johnson- that's a huge complement!

  • That lick at 2:38 sounds a lot like the melody from Bright Side Life by Pat Metheny. Anywho, Carl is a sick player. Thanks for uploading.

  • this guy is sick

  • When I was at MI I used to stand outside the big room in the courtyard there and watch through the window at him teaching....like a kid looking at a candy store window...i'm terrified by this guys playing....way good

  • I've always loved Carl's intervallic lines, and i wondered how he came up with them! This is a great video! If only i lived in LA... XD

  • good tacher, my friend cv

  • Great teaching.

  • bad to the ass,lol

  • how the hell does he get that tone. like when he strums the chord on ~03:27 and picks up the whammybar, it just sounds like heaven. that glassy, clean, transparent sound. the tone all the way is definately one the best i've ever heard

very interesting to see him explain his approaches too, he explains things in a very clear way, it's like i can understand his thinking rightway. definately going to get all his videos

  • Since he's barring most of the strings, he's using the index finger of his right hand to sound harmonics on each string as he strums it. It's a trick he uses a lot.

  • ok thanks, sounds a little difficult, i'll give it a try

  • Great player, saw him a couple of times during my time at MI.

  • he's a little too good.

  • TONE, TONE, TONE!!!!
