I picked up a '77 280z and have been looking on the internet for ideas on what I wanna do with it. Your car is exactly what I had in mind to do with mine, updated but still classic. Looks really good! I agree that 16's is the biggest size wheels that look good on the car...but still amazing! Exhaust sounds bad ass too, I'm finishing a head job some time next week, havent even started it yet but I hope it sounds somewhat like yours when I do. The previous own gutted out the car so should be loud.
@JDBEDORE This was the first outing with high poundage springs and the ride height set too high. If you look at later videos you will see I finally found a good spring rate and ride height.
@datsunz na he's talking bout your wheels they're big the fronts are straight but the rear wheels are too big for me it doesn't look right but its your car your not building it to please other people its for YOU beautiful Z though what motor is in it?
@TheBoostDoctor You're right ) It had a tuned L28 on tripple carbs back then.It ended up with a new L28 F54/P90 ARP crank, rod and head bolts, 2mm steel gasket, turbo oil pump, HE351 tubro, Megasquirt II, 680cc injectors, 3" intake and 3" stainless exhaust, knocksense kit, Spec aluminium flywheel, Spec 6 puck clutch, with an R200 LSD.
@datsunz wow thankyou. im about to buy the same sizes as you and was just wondering if there were any problems. what are the effects of negative offset?
@260zfan it's a bit twitchy at speed, setting the toe correctly helps but that doesnt change the fact the SAI is wrong with wheels of that size/offset. I lived with it for the sake of looks. On problem fitting was the fact the tire catches the lower front section of the fibreglasss arches when turn the wheel to park, I cut a small section out wihich is very hard to notice. If I did it again I would get 17x9.5 -19mm offset all round.
@jimes256 like any car that you own.....it's up to you. If you want 22's then fit 22's if someone else doesn't like it then they can buy their own car and fit 15's.....that's what I think.
Nice, seems a popular route... good reason for that too it seems.
If I ever manage to find one in the right condition, at the right price, it's probably going to be the route I take it down aswell.
Were you at Dorset Japanese Car Sow on 2nd of August? My memories failed me, but remember a 240z there that looked a bit like this, although mite not of at all knowing me. Spent a while drooling over it I'm sure.
lol whenever you upgrade one thing, there's always something else that needs changing as a result it seems. My dad had that problem with his skyline, cost quickly mounted hehe.
Still worth it in the end once you finally get on top of it all.
Oh and I searched megasquirt since I didn't know what it was, big mistake, but found it in the end haha.
i don't know much about these cars but ido like them. how is the handling? in the future when i take my ls1 out im going to need a nice little track car. how are the rear ends are they tough? and alternative cheap rear end swaps that fit these things? to the OP she's a beauty
nice, I love the old school z's, I've always wanted one and just wanted to drop either a rb26dett in it or a 2jz in it. what kinda engine do you have in there? sounds great. your reverse light and brake light is out haha
get the fuck outta here you little snot nosed punk...you wouldnt know what choice was if it smacked you in your dicksucker...that happens to be a slick ass Z...Dont hate because you roll moms hand-me-down civic with a exhaust tip thinking youre a tuner...
thats the besttt looking 240z ive seen. You modified it exactly how i would picture mine to be. The nice older looking rims with wide tread. And excellent color choice. good man
i found some info, mostly dealing with cold weather. But yes, i see where bad casting is breaking the center clean out of the wheel. Seems to be really prevolent with their thin spoke "racing" wheels (LOL). especially the five spoke that seems to be popular. Couldn't find anything on the rota rb series though. May just be because there are not nearly as many of them out there, definatly does not mean they are safe in cold weather though.
yeah all I've seen were pictures but they were up close enough to see the big rota center cap. most looked like they were GT3's but I think one picture was an RB but I couldn't really tell cuz all the spokes were either bent or broken.
whats the width on those 17's? What size tires are you running as well? I thing the look is fantastic. I've been considering 17x9 rota RB's with 235-40-ZR17 rubber wrapped around them. Thats a total diameter of about 24.4 inches and a section width between 9.5 and 9.8 inches. Sorry bout the standard measurements, hope they are not a problem (the metric is in the tire size if you know how to calculate it).
do NOT get rotas. ever. they WILL break if you do anything above street driving. Watanabe makes the same wheel and although it costs alot more, they are some of the best quality wheels out there.
heard the same thing about panasport. The only problem with watanabes is that they don't make deep offset 17s. I would go with 16s, but tire sizes are more limited and i really don't want to get into stretching tires. Also, your the first person i've heard talking about rota wheels breaking, but that may be from not digging deep enough. Do you have any info on intances of rotas breaking. The only real time i've ever seen a wheel truely break was a guy hitting a curb is a rx-8 with stock rims.
@Vodd9 So true, lookin back in the day when i liked(i guess i still like a little) the chargers, camaros, cougars and such...they are nice to look at and may be fast in a strait line...but this is where it's at, the S30...cant be beat. After owning a Camaro and a Z06 which i still have, my 280z is much more fun...and SIMPLE..oh my this car is FUN to work on...so when saying its nearly finish its like the ending to a perfect movie, you don't want it to end.

Ahh...love the sound! I had a 72'. Had problems with the SU Carbs Floats sticking, and Overheating. I think only 2 core rad. Some said to keep the engine hood propped up to the stops while driving to ventilate. I never did. Mine was US (LHD) version with Competition Orange paint! Thanks Mate for the video!
What a great car, congrats !!!!! And that sound is perfect. I can imagine face of any Porsche fan when you overtake him - Because this is pure classic car like no other.
How much money? good question following amounts are in GBP £ not $ Car 3,800 wheels 1,500 + tyres 500 = 2000 custom: suspension/bushes/dampers 1500 fuel tank and fuel lines/ fittings 800 engine rebuild 1000 turbo charger 300 ecu/injectors/intake pipes/ intercooler/ fuel pump 1500 wilwood brakes/servo/disc/pads 1500 stainless 3" exhaust system. 400 look on a porsche drivers face when I overtake him.....priceless!
I know but from experience with families Z's that they have no problems overtaking Porsche's.
Love your car mate.
What do you think I could do with about £2600 to £2800. Im looking at a '72 Zed car in good nick for about £2500 and want to spend about the same modifying it.
Are you saying that there are other places to buy these Superlites where they are of better quality? I.e. they manufacture Superlights in Australia, is this the same company or brand?
those wheels being way too big (i like 15" max) are the only thing i don't dig on it. perfect car otherwise from one 240z owner to another. engine sounds great.
Sounds gorgeous, Would love a 240z now, To think back 25yrs when i was mucking around with old jags i could have picked up a solid 240z for peanuts! No chance now.
