He's doing circular breathing. EXTREMELY difficult. I heard about it in the early 70's when I was playing trumpet in high school. He reminds me of Clark Terry. They are both straight up tactician terrors. But Wynton's tone is not as clean and crisp as Clark Terry's was.
I see no difference between this wanking and any "fusion" group from the 70's-80's. Only difference is, it's coated in neoclassicism, so it's deemed 'valuable' by the jazz establishment.
@trombonepenguin in your earlier comment you asked me to comment again when I realise that every note makes sense to me and has a purpose. just because you think every note has a purpose doenst mean i have to to think that. all music is opinionated and I think that when you realise that without opinion then your love of wynton would be pointless i think you should comment.
i guess its just my personel opinion, his technique is incredible but he just doesnt do much for me. But I have to respect because all of you seem to love his playing.
@alistamartin@iluannr Take into consideration that its a possibity that the musicality and genious creativity in this video goes by so fast that your ear is not yet mature and able enough to hear it. When every single note in this video makes sense to you and has a purpose, only then you should try commenting again.
A little too much showoff by the way. There was some great ideas and dude can play anything and has super technique, but this tune a little slower maybe would sound more musical on trumpet at least.
@tombokickass thats a Monette Decorated trumpet. They cost something like $30,000 and take 100,000 man hours to build. They're website is monette.net or check out their youtube channel. It has a video of them building one...
Ali Jackson is the best ******* drummer I've ever known and ever met. He played with my dad, Marcus Belgrave, along with Wynton, and I had a chance to meet him. KEEP ON DOING IT BIG, ALI!!!!!!!! YOUR THE BEST!
C'est du branler, la démonstration qu'on peut avoir toute la technique musicale mais sans avoir quelque chose à raconter ça ne sert à rien. Sandoval c'est beaucoup plus intriguant
@alistamartin dude winton marsalis plays w plenty of passion and soul, its the tune. this tune's designed to show off how fast u can play. if u listen 2 his other stuff like portrait of louis armstrong he plays slower w more attitude. not that he doesn't play w attitude here, it jus takes a trained ear to grasp the ideas he's making underneath the flurry of notes. besides, jazz isn't just an expression of passion and soul, its a language. at least thats how i see it.
@alistamartin Honestly, it's amazing that Wynton has the immense amount of passion in this performance. Bebop is one of the more difficult of jazz forms to really be able to be expressive in. Another person who does this well is Chick Korea. Plus, no matter how much you dislike the man, you have to admit he's got chops
And while Miles also did some very innovative things, I think it's impossible to come up with a "greatest" jazz musician. Like trying to pick the best chocolate cake
If you were able to see the entire picture, you will realize people put a lot of work into their attainment and out of either humbleness or arragance the play the work side down. If you were able to follow any so called great,
John Coltrane Practiced and also had a teacher, he also took lesson his entire career. His family cites him as ALWAYS having his saxophone in hand.

@Iegres7able It's a model from a handmade custom factory named Monette. This specific version is the Prana Decorated. Go to monette.net and check it out.
@Iegres7able His trumpet is made so that his lips don't bust because he is always always constantly playing nonstop. This way he wont suffer the way Louis Armstrong did.
yeah but I wish he'd grow up. That long passage where his sound cracks up because he's so intent on proving he can do circular breathing. Give me Freddie Hubbard's version of this any day. And as for "great" trumpet players, I find Marcus Belgrave or Terrell Stafford have a lot more to say that is just about the music.
@TheRaptorfiend oops! Been told to shut up by the the youtube opinion police :( I stand by my comments. No-one is above criticism. And why don't you check out Freddie's version, it's on youtube and you might like it. It's not about how I play.
@brilliantcorners I might have overreacted just a *tiny* bit previously. I just get a bit incensed when virtuoso performers get criticized/slammed because someone doesn't like their style. If you like other players' versions better, then that's great. But to me saying that someone with Wynton's talent needs to grow up is a bit silly. No true musician ever stops growing, and who's to say what his motives are only about proving that he can circular breathe? Maybe he's just trying to improve.
every video has at least one comment to the effect of "10 people so and so". how about a few more on the videos contents? maybe wyntons great version of this standard?
@lobollaco i think its a monette trumpet which was a special present to wynton, the progress of making this horn is on youtube, but i cant remember how this trumpet is called sry
Wynton is simply outstanding. No other words to describe it.Caught him lives many times.Sadly I wasn't at the jam session my friend was running some years ago.
Wynton showed up with his bass player after just completing his orchestral show down the road.Came on the band stand and blew is heart out for two hours, simply for the love of music.
My friend said what a lesson in stamina and musicianship. He took on the responsibility for keeping jazz out there.
The best Wynton Marsalis albums are "The Marciac Suite," "Live at the Village Vanguard," "Black Codes" and "Joe's Cool Blues" in my opinion. But, that's like asking what kind of chocolate is the tastiest. They are all so gooooood!
@BBPWN1 A harmon is entirely metal - it has a central chamber that produces a more vibrant and shrill sound with a small curved opening in the middle that allows sound to come out. A bucket mute, on the other hand, doesn't have the same curved opening at the tip (instead it's a flat surface) and is filled with a soft material to absorb/deaden the sound.
@decus69 You could say that about pretty much any trumpet player, ever. If the goal was to be better than Miles Davis, 99.99% of all trumpet players should just stop playing. What's your point?
Wow, every video of Wynton Marsalis comes with a comments section filled with debate over his virtuosity versus his ability to "play from the heart". His technique is marvelous, and carries with it meaning. No one, not the worst middle school jazz student pretending to be a professional or the best cat actually living the music, can question this man's emotional motives. Maybe his lightning-fast arpeggiations do not speak to you as Ayler's trembling squeals do, but give him credit at least.
@BigSax26 I'm in total agreement here. I think before you decide to bash anyone like this for what they should do, what they do, don't do, compare them as worse than someone else you should have to be at least at a level of musicianship to do so. I'm a Navy Band Jazz Musician and I wouldn't dare say anything about who is better or debate that he isn't good. The man has to be one of the most influential players of the last 30+ years. He's doing things for music and jazz that are forever.
@ArkRed1 I'm fairly certain that this video starts in the middle of the performance. They probably played the head and the piano player took a few and it started at the end/start of Wynton's solo.
@Ezikno you have got to be joking...no offense but you must be in marching band or something....totally different players, and having had the chance to play with both of them, your comment makes me laugh and barf in my mouth at the same time.
This is going to make no sense to anyone but me, but I'm quite stoned, and it's as if that trumpet is a machine gun,and he's shooting flocks of ducks out of the sky, sucessfully hitting at least one bird with every single bulltet.
@trapfman lmao man I wont knock your opinion but to me I think they have two different styles. Davis was simply out of this world and has classics that will be known by those who appreciate the art for centuries. One thing for certain both will be known past the end of time.
@Pharoe29 You may be right, but Wynton is a narrow minded asshole, who has been criticized by a lot of pros for being a douchebag and having no real soul in his playing style.. He's full of himself.
@trapfman it amazes me because I have met so many who have met Wynton in person and they all say the same thing that he is pretty arrogant and comes off as an ass. I personally never met him so I don't know but the people I know who have I trust their words.
@Pharoe29 Miles was probably a musical genius, but was really average "technically" playing wise, While Marsalis, is probably one of the best ever technically, but has no real spunk or creative tenure. I mean Terrence Blanchard is a much better arranger than Wynton.
I don't know about Wynton being an azzhole, I met him when I was kid my first year playing trumpet, was really to young to be able to gauge his persona, and truely didn't even know who he was at the time.lol
@liljjjj Though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, Wynton aside from the trumpet arguments, is probably the hardest working and most active COMPOSER alive today. Look at all the tunes he's written, symphonies, and all the songs from his own group and lincoln center jazz orchestra. Wynton is in another league. So sure, he can play fast and you question the soul, but just look at how much music classical and jazz this man has been dealing with and it is nothing short of astonishing.
A few things:The only people that don't like Wynton are the people that are in the same game, but jealous of his success, & people that are so insecure, their perception of art gets distorted.
The facts are, no matter how much you hate Wynton, that still won't change the World's perception of him being the GREATEST TRUMPET PLAYER THAT HAS EVER LIVED. 100 years from now,Wynton's legacy will outshine ANY other trumpet player (unless someone new comes along) Say what you want, won't change that
@grant1r and @Danro05, I can hear a lot of Clifford Brown in there and he took that solo to another level compared to what Clifford and even Arturo Sandoval has done with the Tune... I like this to the point I grab some of it for myself as a workout...
@grant1r and @Danro05, I can hear a lot of Clifford Brown in there and he took that solo to another level compared to what Clifford and even Arturo Sandoval has done with the Tune... I like this to the point I grab some of it for myself as a workout...
whereas wynton doesn't bring the STYLE forward, many of his ideas, especially in this solo, are unique and technically brilliant. I'm not much of a technique guy, shaking their finger at those who's technique isn't as great, but listen to that crazy angular stuff he does in the middle, and that fourths stuff. It's all really interesting - and that's coming froma guy who isn't all that into wynton
I don't like Marsalis' playing. He seems to pride himself in playing the trumpet with incredible virtuosity rather than play from the heart. That's better than vice versa (Maynard playing with emotion but zero virtuosity), but I think the best balance was found in players like Miles and Brownie. Virtuosic, but emotional at the same time. I just don't feel anything listening to Wynton's incredibly skill and virtuosity sometimes.
I have heard mixed things on Monette trumpets. Either you sound amazing on them or like crap. I play an old Strad from the 60's now and it's great. If anybody on here has Monette experience then could you let me know how it compares to a stock horn?

No one, not the worst middle school jazz student pretending to be a professional or the best cat actually living the music, can question this man's emotional motives. Maybe his lightning-fast arpeggiations do not speak to you as Ayler's trembling squeals do, but give him credit at least.
BigSax26 8 months ago 30
@BigSax26 He's probably the greatest "living" Jazz trumpet player on the planet.

@BigSax26 lollin' at "Ayler's trembling squeals". If only Wynton could appreciate THOSE~~
fuzzfactory 3 months ago
@BigSax26 I'm in total agreement here. I think before you decide to bash anyone like this for what they should do, what they do, don't do, compare them as worse than someone else you should have to be at least at a level of musicianship to do so. I'm a Navy Band Jazz Musician and I wouldn't dare say anything about who is better or debate that he isn't good. The man has to be one of the most influential players of the last 30+ years. He's doing things for music and jazz that are forever.

A great player. Too bad he isn't worth listening to.

OK, I give up, Where's the melody? I know it's jazz, but what's wrong with playing the melody and then going into the mass improv?
ArkRed1 9 months ago
@ArkRed1 I'm fairly certain that this video starts in the middle of the performance. They probably played the head and the piano player took a few and it started at the end/start of Wynton's solo.

@ArkRed1 Man, its the same to ask where is the face in Picasso paint
kumanalex 8 months ago
@ArkRed1 The pianist plays the melody underneath the last chorus. It's a standard chart; most jazz musicians can hear it just from the chord changes.

@Ezikno you have got to be joking...no offense but you must be in marching band or something....totally different players, and having had the chance to play with both of them, your comment makes me laugh and barf in my mouth at the same time.

Makes total sense to me polymath7!!
TheDanSebastian 9 months ago
This is going to make no sense to anyone but me, but I'm quite stoned, and it's as if that trumpet is a machine gun,and he's shooting flocks of ducks out of the sky, sucessfully hitting at least one bird with every single bulltet.

Que extraordinaria ejecución, la secuencia de notas que realiza sin dar pausa... esta es una de las canciones en donde se denota los altibajos que hace... que velocidad... formidable!! No se puede comparar con Miles Davis...

marsalis sucks ass compared to davis
trapfman 9 months ago
@trapfman lmao man I wont knock your opinion but to me I think they have two different styles. Davis was simply out of this world and has classics that will be known by those who appreciate the art for centuries. One thing for certain both will be known past the end of time.
Pharoe29 9 months ago
@Pharoe29 You may be right, but Wynton is a narrow minded asshole, who has been criticized by a lot of pros for being a douchebag and having no real soul in his playing style.. He's full of himself.
trapfman 9 months ago
@trapfman it amazes me because I have met so many who have met Wynton in person and they all say the same thing that he is pretty arrogant and comes off as an ass. I personally never met him so I don't know but the people I know who have I trust their words.
Pharoe29 9 months ago
@Pharoe29 Miles was probably a musical genius, but was really average "technically" playing wise, While Marsalis, is probably one of the best ever technically, but has no real spunk or creative tenure. I mean Terrence Blanchard is a much better arranger than Wynton.
I don't know about Wynton being an azzhole, I met him when I was kid my first year playing trumpet, was really to young to be able to gauge his persona, and truely didn't even know who he was at the time.lol
liljjjj 9 months ago
@liljjjj Though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, Wynton aside from the trumpet arguments, is probably the hardest working and most active COMPOSER alive today. Look at all the tunes he's written, symphonies, and all the songs from his own group and lincoln center jazz orchestra. Wynton is in another league. So sure, he can play fast and you question the soul, but just look at how much music classical and jazz this man has been dealing with and it is nothing short of astonishing.

asianfrenzy666 10 months ago
A few things:The only people that don't like Wynton are the people that are in the same game, but jealous of his success, & people that are so insecure, their perception of art gets distorted.
The facts are, no matter how much you hate Wynton, that still won't change the World's perception of him being the GREATEST TRUMPET PLAYER THAT HAS EVER LIVED. 100 years from now,Wynton's legacy will outshine ANY other trumpet player (unless someone new comes along) Say what you want, won't change that

@joeberrymusic you got wyntons trumpet up your ass
aaronamccoy 8 months ago
@joeberrymusic Strange opinion considering Miles Davis has sold more, is the critics choice, and the public's choice.

@grant1r and @Danro05, I can hear a lot of Clifford Brown in there and he took that solo to another level compared to what Clifford and even Arturo Sandoval has done with the Tune... I like this to the point I grab some of it for myself as a workout...

wish i could play like that :-)
briankeary 10 months ago
whereas wynton doesn't bring the STYLE forward, many of his ideas, especially in this solo, are unique and technically brilliant. I'm not much of a technique guy, shaking their finger at those who's technique isn't as great, but listen to that crazy angular stuff he does in the middle, and that fourths stuff. It's all really interesting - and that's coming froma guy who isn't all that into wynton
trptpaul 10 months ago
Disclaimer: THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.

BREATHE WYNTON, BREATHE!!!
tapeworm489 11 months ago 23
@tapeworm489 He's using continuous breathing. You can see that at several moments.
1:45, 2:06 and 2:14.
He takes some are in his mouth. Uses that to play and than quickly breathes trough his nose.
Digeridoo players also use that technic.
iFabber 7 months ago
@iFabber -.- Thanks for explaining the art of circular breathing to someone who already knows how to do it. I was just being funny.

I have heard mixed things on Monette trumpets. Either you sound amazing on them or like crap. I play an old Strad from the 60's now and it's great. If anybody on here has Monette experience then could you let me know how it compares to a stock horn?
