  • Cannonball Marsalis!

  • I wonder how much that personalized brass trumpet costs.

  • I see no difference between this wanking and any "fusion" group from the 70's-80's. Only difference is, it's coated in neoclassicism, so it's deemed 'valuable' by the jazz establishment.

  • was wondering when he would take a breath? Does anybody know who is on the piano, bass, and drum?

  • @StreetTeam37 i dunno bass/drums, but 20bucks says that's marcus roberts tinkling the keys

  • @trombonepenguin in your earlier comment you asked me to comment again when I realise that every note makes sense to me and has a purpose. just because you think every note has a purpose doenst mean i have to to think that. all music is opinionated and I think that when you realise that without opinion then your love of wynton would be pointless i think you should comment.

  • 1:35 blimmin eck!!!

  • i guess its just my personel opinion, his technique is incredible but he just doesnt do much for me. But I have to respect because all of you seem to love his playing.

  • whether you liket or not he is a real genious. In my native Argentina people love the guy

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • search EMIL BIZGA....

  • @alistamartin @iluannr Take into consideration that its a possibity that the musicality and genious creativity in this video goes by so fast that your ear is not yet mature and able enough to hear it. When every single note in this video makes sense to you and has a purpose, only then you should try commenting again.

  • @trombonepenguin Well put

  • what is it for a trumpet?

  • You know you're badass when you can sit your ass down throughout the performance

  • A little too much showoff by the way. There was some great ideas and dude can play anything and has super technique, but this tune a little slower maybe would sound more musical on trumpet at least.

  • If he is tonguing all those notes... girls must love him

  • @tombokickass thats a Monette Decorated trumpet. They cost something like $30,000 and take 100,000 man hours to build. They're website is monette.net or check out their youtube channel. It has a video of them building one...

  • Ben Wolfe is sick as hell.

  • Ali Jackson is the best ******* drummer I've ever known and ever met. He played with my dad, Marcus Belgrave, along with Wynton, and I had a chance to meet him. KEEP ON DOING IT BIG, ALI!!!!!!!! YOUR THE BEST!

  • my teacher knows him :D

  • @jkmsem oh cool

  • I would sell my soul to play like that.

  • @oceanrage that's powerful stuff... well said. In my high school band class, if we weren't practicing we were watching Marsalis. Great stuff.

  • what is he playing? i mean its obviously a trumpet, but.. what is that?!

  • Im in a trance... a jazz trance

  • alistamartin is trippin

  • he's a cyborg; only few human left

  • C'est du branler, la démonstration qu'on peut avoir toute la technique musicale mais sans avoir quelque chose à raconter ça ne sert à rien. Sandoval c'est beaucoup plus intriguant

  • @alistamartin Get hip motherfucker.

  • @alistamartin Aw, man! 'Hate' is such a strong word!

  • @alistamartin well its a different style of jazz and True trumpet players Always show off i know becouse im a trumpet player heheh its fun

  • @alistamartin dude winton marsalis plays w plenty of passion and soul, its the tune. this tune's designed to show off how fast u can play. if u listen 2 his other stuff like portrait of louis armstrong he plays slower w more attitude. not that he doesn't play w attitude here, it jus takes a trained ear to grasp the ideas he's making underneath the flurry of notes. besides, jazz isn't just an expression of passion and soul, its a language. at least thats how i see it.

  • @alistamartin heard of beebop you ignorant fool?

  • @alistamartin Honestly, it's amazing that Wynton has the immense amount of passion in this performance. Bebop is one of the more difficult of jazz forms to really be able to be expressive in. Another person who does this well is Chick Korea. Plus, no matter how much you dislike the man, you have to admit he's got chops

And while Miles also did some very innovative things, I think it's impossible to come up with a "greatest" jazz musician. Like trying to pick the best chocolate cake

  • @alistamartin You jelly, bro?

  • @alistamartin Calm your tits.

  • HOLY SHIT.

  • like if he blew your mind

  • amazing...

  • 22 dislikes????????' Jealous people

  • boring

  • awesomest 'mouthpiece' ever

  • >.> jaw drops... dat lung power

  • you will find an individual who sacrifices themselves, family and personal life for attainment of the greater

  • If you were able to see the entire picture, you will realize people put a lot of work into their attainment and out of either humbleness or arragance the play the work side down. If you were able to follow any so called great,

  • John Coltrane Practiced and also had a teacher, he also took lesson his entire career. His family cites him as ALWAYS having his saxophone in hand.

Call it what you may, the reality is (my personal belief) we like to put labels on things ( playing from the heart, born with talent, genius etc) to sometimes cut ourselves breaks for lack there of.

  • Charlie Parker is cited to have practiced 16 hours a day. (if he practice 16 hours a day approx 5 days a week, that puts him at 4100 hours a year of practice) Within three years he would have met his 10,000 hour mark.

  • A Jazz great and so was Brown (short lived). His virtuosity versus his ability to "play from the heart' is hog wash. EVERY great individual spent many, many (at least 10,000) hours in the woodshed profecting their craft. With all his technique and emotion is displayed in his delivery just as other greats of their time. All richly embedded in core of their long years in the wood shed.

  • like a boss!

  • Thumbs up if you think Clifford Brown could kick Wynton Marsalis's ass

  • @kingoliver45 they models and prototypes are not only custom made... in fact if you want to buy a horn they have already a lot of model... wynton have only prototypes... if he likes them... then dave put on sale... for the mouthpieces is the same...

    (sorry for my english)

  • @Jazzman303 he is the founder of the young lions!!!

and yes... he talk about himself... it's more technically than just talent...

  • @jerec576 jajajaja prada.... it's funny how the peopple is ignorant just because they want to... all the information is here on internet... dave monette have a channel... and have his web site... there you can find everything about the history of his trumpets...

  • @Vitamine101 no sometimes... he prefer to play jazz... he just play classical music because he can!!!

ond no only that he win 2 times jazz and classical grammy the same year!!!

  • boring flash.

his lines are not that happening!

  • 21 people cant circular breathe

  • i play tha trumpet and in jazz band!!!!!!!!! He is so amazin!

  • The fingers....so fast

  • That's a Monette Decorated Raja Trumpet I believe

  • What kind of Trumpet is this?

  • Circular breathing at @4:12 hell yeah.

  • Master.

  • Master of improv.

  • Personally I don't give a flying fart if he's technically correct, for me whatever it is that he ddoes works for me & my ears Love it!

  • is that a jo ral bucket?

  • I personally play a trumpet and I've never seen one like that. Any ideas what kind it is?

  • @Iegres7able It's a model from a handmade custom factory named Monette. This specific version is the Prana Decorated. Go to monette.net and check it out.

  • @Iegres7able His trumpet is made so that his lips don't bust because he is always always constantly playing nonstop. This way he wont suffer the way Louis Armstrong did.

  • Tooommaaa! Qué bueno, chikillo! Muy grande.

  • yeah but I wish he'd grow up. That long passage where his sound cracks up because he's so intent on proving he can do circular breathing. Give me Freddie Hubbard's version of this any day. And as for "great" trumpet players, I find Marcus Belgrave or Terrell Stafford have a lot more to say that is just about the music.

  • @brilliantcorners When you can play like him, you can critique his performance. Until then just shut up and enjoy the music

  • @TheRaptorfiend oops! Been told to shut up by the the youtube opinion police :( I stand by my comments. No-one is above criticism. And why don't you check out Freddie's version, it's on youtube and you might like it. It's not about how I play.

  • @brilliantcorners I might have overreacted just a *tiny* bit previously. I just get a bit incensed when virtuoso performers get criticized/slammed because someone doesn't like their style. If you like other players' versions better, then that's great. But to me saying that someone with Wynton's talent needs to grow up is a bit silly. No true musician ever stops growing, and who's to say what his motives are only about proving that he can circular breathe? Maybe he's just trying to improve.

  • every video has at least one comment to the effect of "10 people so and so". how about a few more on the videos contents? maybe wyntons great version of this standard?

  • 21 beiber fans know about wynton marsalis thats something

  • This guy is a fucking god!!!!!

  • amazing guy, what a talent !

  • Ronnie Scotts next Friday here I come.

  • that's a very interesting trumpet he has

  • Hah, I thought that was the lighting at :27, but I think it's the sweat on the drummer's shirt. He is workin'.

  • So what trumpet is that? lol shits sick!!!

  • @lobollaco It's a custom Monette trumpet.

  • There are no mistakes in jazz, only distasteful ideas.

  • @cnagy629 interesting perspective

  • at 2:20 does he think he made a mistake?

  • @MrAlaska67329 well, he's wrong

  • @MrAlaska67329 No, it looks like he just really felt something.

  • 20 people have nvr picked up an insrtument

  • @Arclite720 - The only word to describe this cat is "Chops."

  • wow

  • Comment removed

  • There are no words to describe this cat!!!!!!!

  • Cool.

  • Baddest trumpet player...EVER!

  • Amazing!!!!!!

  • Wynton is simply outstanding. No other words to describe it.Caught him lives many times.Sadly I wasn't at the jam session my friend was running some years ago.

Wynton showed up with his bass player after just completing his orchestral show down the road.Came on the band stand and blew is heart out for two hours, simply for the love of music.

My friend said what a lesson in stamina and musicianship. He took on the responsibility for keeping jazz out there.

    Wynton defines jazz.

  • Try playing this tune in 7 its tough but fun :)

  • coolest trumpet ever?

    i think so!

  • The best Wynton Marsalis albums are "The Marciac Suite," "Live at the Village Vanguard," "Black Codes" and "Joe's Cool Blues" in my opinion. But, that's like asking what kind of chocolate is the tastiest. They are all so gooooood!

  • I'd like to see wynton and roy go at it on this tune

  • If I was learning jazz trumpet and saw this performance, I would quit, immediately.

  • whats the difference between that and a harmon??

  • @BBPWN1 A harmon is entirely metal - it has a central chamber that produces a more vibrant and shrill sound with a small curved opening in the middle that allows sound to come out. A bucket mute, on the other hand, doesn't have the same curved opening at the tip (instead it's a flat surface) and is filled with a soft material to absorb/deaden the sound.

  • @hegemansays ahh awesome thanks

  • what kind of mute is that?

  • @dannyinternetz It's a bucket mute. Looks to be one of the Jo-Ral models.

  • Nice Work If You Can Sit Down.

    Qi Gong in Action.

  • e chato ouvir isso hein...

  • he has like the coolest trumpet ever with what seems like a built-in mouth peice

  • psh....I can play this.

  • his trumpet look lame and this cat couldn'.t do miles laundry

  • @aaronamccoy What are you doing on youtube! Aren't you supposed to be doing Wynton's laundry?! GET BACK TO WORK!

  • @SpaceHead99 It's a Monette trumpet and a bucket mute, (note sure about brand of mute though)

  • @SpaceHead99 It's a Monette trumpet and a bucket mute.

  • The trumpet is probably a Monette.

  • miles was better

  • @decus69 You could say that about pretty much any trumpet player, ever. If the goal was to be better than Miles Davis, 99.99% of all trumpet players should just stop playing. What's your point?

  • @dmg2478 Cant you read?

  • I think he forgot to take out he mute. dislike!

  • That may be the dopest trrumpet on earth.

  • MUY MUY BUENO EL MEJOR TROMPETISTA , LOS GENES DE CLIFFORD Y DIZZIE

    Y UN GUSTO MARAVILLOSO----

  • Amazing!

  • bEAUTIFUL HORN-WONDERFUL SOUNDING BAND!

  • what a boss!!! what a beast!!!

  • Wow, every video of Wynton Marsalis comes with a comments section filled with debate over his virtuosity versus his ability to "play from the heart". His technique is marvelous, and carries with it meaning. No one, not the worst middle school jazz student pretending to be a professional or the best cat actually living the music, can question this man's emotional motives. Maybe his lightning-fast arpeggiations do not speak to you as Ayler's trembling squeals do, but give him credit at least.

  • @BigSax26 He's probably the greatest "living" Jazz trumpet player on the planet.

  • @BigSax26 lollin' at "Ayler's trembling squeals". If only Wynton could appreciate THOSE~~

  • @BigSax26 I'm in total agreement here. I think before you decide to bash anyone like this for what they should do, what they do, don't do, compare them as worse than someone else you should have to be at least at a level of musicianship to do so. I'm a Navy Band Jazz Musician and I wouldn't dare say anything about who is better or debate that he isn't good. The man has to be one of the most influential players of the last 30+ years. He's doing things for music and jazz that are forever.

  • Im new to this, so here's a question. whats a lick??

  • AWESOME!

  • A great player. Too bad he isn't worth listening to.

  • OK, I give up, Where's the melody? I know it's jazz, but what's wrong with playing the melody and then going into the mass improv?

  • @ArkRed1 I'm fairly certain that this video starts in the middle of the performance. They probably played the head and the piano player took a few and it started at the end/start of Wynton's solo.

  • @ArkRed1 Man, its the same to ask where is the face in Picasso paint

  • @ArkRed1 The pianist plays the melody underneath the last chorus. It's a standard chart; most jazz musicians can hear it just from the chord changes.

  • Circular Breathing the whole last million bars for the win!

  • HA ya'll catch that If I We're A Bell quote?

Wynton ain't no joke. He's heavy.

  • He is really good but personally i prefer doc severinsen

  • @Ezikno you have got to be joking...no offense but you must be in marching band or something....totally different players, and having had the chance to play with both of them, your comment makes me laugh and barf in my mouth at the same time.

  • @Ezikno

  • From 1:35 to 2:16, Winton uses circular breathing method, doesn't he?

  • Makes total sense to me polymath7!!

  • This is going to make no sense to anyone but me, but I'm quite stoned, and it's as if that trumpet is a machine gun,and he's shooting flocks of ducks out of the sky, sucessfully hitting at least one bird with every single bulltet.

  • marsalis sucks ass compared to davis

  • @trapfman lmao man I wont knock your opinion but to me I think they have two different styles. Davis was simply out of this world and has classics that will be known by those who appreciate the art for centuries. One thing for certain both will be known past the end of time.

  • @Pharoe29 You may be right, but Wynton is a narrow minded asshole, who has been criticized by a lot of pros for being a douchebag and having no real soul in his playing style.. He's full of himself.

  • @trapfman it amazes me because I have met so many who have met Wynton in person and they all say the same thing that he is pretty arrogant and comes off as an ass. I personally never met him so I don't know but the people I know who have I trust their words.

  • @Pharoe29 Miles was probably a musical genius, but was really average "technically" playing wise, While Marsalis, is probably one of the best ever technically, but has no real spunk or creative tenure. I mean Terrence Blanchard is a much better arranger than Wynton.

I don't know about Wynton being an azzhole, I met him when I was kid my first year playing trumpet, was really to young to be able to gauge his persona, and truely didn't even know who he was at the time.lol

  • @liljjjj Though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, Wynton aside from the trumpet arguments, is probably the hardest working and most active COMPOSER alive today. Look at all the tunes he's written, symphonies, and all the songs from his own group and lincoln center jazz orchestra. Wynton is in another league. So sure, he can play fast and you question the soul, but just look at how much music classical and jazz this man has been dealing with and it is nothing short of astonishing.

  • what a legend this man is. also i love him monette :)

  • Look at Ali Jackson just sweating through his shirt. Jesus.

  • A few things:The only people that don't like Wynton are the people that are in the same game, but jealous of his success, & people that are so insecure, their perception of art gets distorted.

The facts are, no matter how much you hate Wynton, that still won't change the World's perception of him being the GREATEST TRUMPET PLAYER THAT HAS EVER LIVED. 100 years from now,Wynton's legacy will outshine ANY other trumpet player (unless someone new comes along) Say what you want, won't change that

  • @joeberrymusic you got wyntons trumpet up your ass

  • @joeberrymusic Strange opinion considering Miles Davis has sold more, is the critics choice, and the public's choice.

  • What kind of horn IS that? And that mute! I love that sound.

  • chuck norris plays trumpet = WYNTON MARSALIS

  • @grant1r and @Danro05, I can hear a lot of Clifford Brown in there and he took that solo to another level compared to what Clifford and even Arturo Sandoval has done with the Tune... I like this to the point I grab some of it for myself as a workout...

  • jesus dude can circular breath like nothing!!!

  • wish i could play like that :-)

  • whereas wynton doesn't bring the STYLE forward, many of his ideas, especially in this solo, are unique and technically brilliant. I'm not much of a technique guy, shaking their finger at those who's technique isn't as great, but listen to that crazy angular stuff he does in the middle, and that fourths stuff. It's all really interesting - and that's coming froma guy who isn't all that into wynton

  • Disclaimer: THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.

I don't like Marsalis' playing. He seems to pride himself in playing the trumpet with incredible virtuosity rather than play from the heart. That's better than vice versa (Maynard playing with emotion but zero virtuosity), but I think the best balance was found in players like Miles and Brownie. Virtuosic, but emotional at the same time. I just don't feel anything listening to Wynton's incredibly skill and virtuosity sometimes.

  • BREATHE WYNTON, BREATHE!!!

  • @tapeworm489 He's using continuous breathing. You can see that at several moments.

    1:45, 2:06 and 2:14.

He takes some are in his mouth. Uses that to play and than quickly breathes trough his nose.

Digeridoo players also use that technic.

  • @iFabber -.- Thanks for explaining the art of circular breathing to someone who already knows how to do it. I was just being funny.

  • I have heard mixed things on Monette trumpets. Either you sound amazing on them or like crap. I play an old Strad from the 60's now and it's great. If anybody on here has Monette experience then could you let me know how it compares to a stock horn?

  • WOW!!!!!

  • puta madre!!! que increible, the best I ve ever seen

  • from 4:00 to 4:03 was so one of the best licks in the whole song!! he fit that perfect.

  • o melhor...........maravilha!
