That's the thing....he LOOKS hideous, but once you get over that, he's just a lost little character. Like a kid who's lost in a whole other world. The kids, themselves felt overwhelmed by their parents' divorce, so they could relate to feeling 'lost'. Haven't you ever heard the phrase 'Appearances are deceiving"?
