UMMM.... I WANT THIS RECORDING IMMEDIATELY!!!! <3 I have a couple, and I like this one more than the others already! Could listen to this all day!!!!! :D My soul is melting like butter, and my heart is shitting flowers. Just saying.
Why all the criticism? They are both dedicated professional singers and I would love to see them perform this opera on stage. This is not easy work and they give their all.
The people that feel they need to criticize this need to put themselves on video tape doing their respective parts so that the rest of us can have at them. I wish them all good luck, because they would all fall flat on their faces.
she is not alone many famous singers do this with the hands... does help with expression and feelings particularlly when not on stage. Notice Jonas also does this. Beautiful and well done.. and I am a singer andb teacher btw.
@Maripudelmonaco Thank you for explaining the circumstances of this lovely clip of awe inspiring music. I came to this clip searching for best choral music and its brilliant, I do love though some of the funny comments.
I just scrolled down from the video when I felt the urge to be critical of the gestures.
@Liu666able Again, you show you have no understanding or appreciation of Opera at all. Jonas could well be the best Pinkerton both visually and vocally as well as emmtionally of any tenor in history for this role! Ghegeorgiu my be doing things with her arms that makes her more secure in the recording and since it is not a video, that is just fine...singers while recording even scratch their butts. When did you last sing at La Scala?
Extended hands movement is a part of technique, by raising your arms and not laying them by your side your chest is more free, your entire abdomen more spacious and mobile - someone who used it very expressively and usefully is Magda Oliviero. Gheorghiu in this case is using it without caring about how she looks - because this is the recording studio. Watch Dessay, a similar story, only that her arms are ups and downs.
The Beauty and the Beast ... But the beauty isn't the one you think : Kaufamnn is not only handsome and good looking, he is also the best tenor of today, while Gheorghiu is ... well ... she is terrible, as usual, in all the ways.
It is not surprising that he stands 3 feet away from her. He's likely to get a knuckle sandwich. She is a great singer but should be forced to wear a tight belt around her hips, with her arms trapped therein.
Lovely, arguably the most beautiful love duet in the entire operatic repertory. They both do a superb job here. I like the fact that his voice sometimes takes on a "baritonal" sound. Personally, I think the Freni/Pavarotti/Karajan 1974 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic remains unsurpassed. Any opinions?
Does any rule exist determining how should a tenor voice sound? Kaufmann simply touches people´s hearts, and that ´s great! For most people who love opera, it is not important, if his technique is in accordance with the italian or german school, but how it affects your senses. Listening him, I need not exactly know what he is singing about because he expresses everything by his voice dynamics.
Frankly, I wouldn't trust many opinions here. Is everyone judging what they hear over You Tube. At best, these probably only suggest what his voice is truly like. For me, so far so good but I look forward to hearing him in person this Spring. '11, with the Los Angeles Opera.

Let's not idolize older singers just because they already died or are very old. Most of the times I prefer the singers of past generations over the current ones, but that's not a general law we must obey (though it often seems so in the Opera world). IMO Gheorghiu and Kaufmann in this duet achieved the same beauty, feeling and stylistical accuracy of most of the greatest singers who sang this duet in past decades. This is really amazing in every way.
Actually, this is cut together. You can see at 6:21 how Kaufmann starts to sing "sei mia" (the low option) while we hear him hold the high C. Bad cutting.
Been listening to so many Kaufmann clips here on YT, hard-pressed to tell whether I really find him quite so great as everyone says - this one's nice, even if, admittedly, it's perhaps unfortunate one is immediately reminded of so many legendary performances in this repertoire...
Plain and simple.... Kaufmann sucks now. 10-12 years ago he had a beautiful instrument that rang clear and showed his true tambour. NOW, for unknown reasons, he has decided to destroy all of that with darkened, forced singing, resulting in a very raspy gross sound. DUMB CHOICES..... just give him a few more years, he'll be the new Villazon....
@aroncooker It's the same old story: they see how much money can be made in the Heltentenor repertory,start pressing their larynxes down,darkening their voices artificially and forcing. But the real crime is that the opera houses, record companies and conductors encourage this by hiring these immitation dramatic tenors. And, indeed, there is more to be made singing Tannhaeuser than Duca.But still, this is certainly not bad what Kaufmann is doing here.I'm not sure it's fair to say "he sucks."
those hands get on my nerves ....why is she conducting????? And kaufmann...i love ur gorgeous sumptuous, dark, yes dark voice...I can listen to that sound all night!!!!!!
Gheorghiu sings, Kaufmann pushes sounds through a tube. And all singing teachers and the public love Kaufmann, because he apparently has such a fine technique and musicality. I can't explain how much I hate his forced, artificially darkened, hoarse and monochrome voice. Where is the sweetness, youthfulness or live in the voice? Oh I forgot, we don't need these things, because this is a very rare and heroic heldentenor voice...
I do not feel like you do, but I can understand your feeling. Everyone says that it is great, while you think that it is worthless. It probably happens to many of us sometimes.
However, forced..? No, he is not forced.
4ever wrote : “those hands get on my nerves…”. Yes it is annoying, a bad habit.
@ForAll23 Well, thanks for understanding my feelings! :) Let me give you an example of why I believe his singing is forced: his own natural voice several years ago. Check on Youtube for a recording of the Student Prince with Kaufmann and there you have his normal voice. I believe his singing was really beautiful back then.
Tenors that I do appreciate are: Björling, Cura, Gedda, Domingo, Kaufmann, Pavarotti (he was fun) etc. But I do not appreciate Carreras (as a singer). Why? I do not know, I have tried, but it does not work, no matter what he does.
@ForAll23 I neither like nor dislike Kaufmann as a person. I like his singing before the year 2000 and I dislike it afterwards. His change of technique brought him tremendous success since he sounds different to other singers. However, he is not the first one to try this, Giuseppe Giacomini and Jerome Hines did the exact same thing and I can't stand their singing either. Listen to Florez, Bjorling, Wunderlich or even Melchior and then to Kaufmann. Kaufmann doesn't sing like a tenor should.
Sure, sometimes he is a bit forced. On the other hand, almost all tenors force themselves from time to time, with few exceptions, e.g. Mr.Gedda and Mr.Wunderlicht.
You are right, Kaufmann does not sound like classical tenors (e.g. Björling, Schmidt, Kiepura etc). On the other hand, it is a new sound and that gives some other dimensions that I find interesting and beautiful. Perhaps others feel similarly, hence his success.
You have probably, in a sense, right. On the other hand, maybe we now face new tenor era. Thus a new way of thinking about how a tenor should sound. Nothing says that the classical approach was the ultimate.
@ForAll23 I think Kaufmann has success because not many sing like him, he seems special and unique. However, I am interested in the music, the drama and the emotions and can't be pleased with a singer who always sounds dark, heroic, heavy and hooty. I can only be satisfied with singers who are capable of expressing the full range of emotions as required by the music, and sometimes there are delicate or sweet moments in Opera where I don't appreciate if the singer sounds like he is suffocating :)
@ForAll23 Very well said, art is subjective. I only recently started to dislike Kaufmann with such a passion. It was when I discovered his early recordings on Youtube which imo show his real voice. I love both Bjorling and Gedda (with whom I had like 80 singing lessons :) and I think that all of the greats have their strengths and weaknesses. I think Gedda was above average in Italian music, but truly outstanding in French repertoire. Well, we are lucky to have all the diversity! :)
Today I do not think he was the best, but I think he made some songs/arias better than other e.g. “Holy Night”.
Earlier I also thought that Mr.Gedda way of singing was an academic mumbo jumbo. No force, no real expression, no nothing etc.
Nowadays (after 42 years of listening) do I think that he is/was a great artist, with an outstanding voice technique. He forces his voice almost never.
@ForAll23 I remember someone posting about Kaufmann that he could just as well be singing the contents of a telephone book instead of the aria he was singing and he would equally love his singing. This demonstrates the point I am trying to make. For some people, Kaufmann produces an impressive sound and to them, that's enough. A Tenor shouldn't "sound" a particular way like Kaufmann does, he should let the music decide on the sound depending on the situation. It's called interpretation!
@ForAll23 I always appreciate it,when people like you express intelligent opinions moderately and in a way that is not offensive or insulting and also allows other points of view.Sometimes when I read the comments in YT I can't believe the visciousness repressed violence.The pity w. Kaufman is: it's a good voice, but by trying, not to sing rep. that is "too heavy," but to sing it with preconceived ideas abt. how it "should" sound he will, I fear, get into trouble.But, it's his life.
@ForAll23 Absolutely. I think Domingo was always a tenor, he just made it official one day, but (in my opinion) in an attempt to make a "dramatic" or "baritonal" sound, he pressed his larynx and darkened the voice.The pressure on the throat muscles makes it impossible for the voice to turn(la voce coperta)hence the top is a matter of luck with him.The position is (too)open, and the depressed larynx gives it that (arificial) dramatic color.What Kauf. does now.Works (kind of) while you´re young.
There is no absolute voice, which allows much speculation and discussion.
Trying to prove what is right either philosophically or anatomically/physiologically will probably be an impossible task.
After listening more closely on this duet, I agree with Pollione88 that Mr.Kaufman forces a little. On the other hand, how many great singers have not done so.
@ForAll23 Absolutely! And the bottom line is: it´s all so subjetive. What is "forcing" anyway? Kaufman gets a little carried away - not surprising with this music! These are all fine artists who have achieved a great deal in their lives. It´s fun to discuss and compare thoughts, but in the end, as a very dear, departed friend mine always used to say: "Una opinione è come un buco di culo - ognuno ne ha uno." Fun talking to you!
An opera director, complained, in an early state, on Jussi´s high tones. He even went so far that he, in an early stage, expressed that it was complete madness of a baritone trying to scream a tenor high C.
A conductor told Zarah Leander (see Wikipedia or YT) that she had a nice voice, but not for singing.
As a student of both, I can honestly for longevity, learn the Italian school. The Germanic is very forceful. It creates massive power and brings a beautiful dark color to your voice. However, after a while it WILL Wear on you your voice.
I have also heard it through the years. Perhaps are the lyrical voices more sensitive, or certain types of voices are more sensitive.
In general I do not think so much of this- or that school. Every individual should probably "pick" parts of what is right for him/her of known knowledge.
I can, mind you, I am still a student, not a master of it. For example, an exercise that I used to practice would be to lean my stomach against the edge of the piano, so that my diaphragm would be completely depressed. Then I would deeply inhale, and try to move the piano with my stomach by pressing against it, while singing a neutral note. This,is not healthy I have later found out, after reading Richard Miller's Training Tenor Voices. However, the trade off ,massive sound
i was proud to hear Angela last year in copenhagen...and was waiting for allmost 2 hours ..just for speaking 1 minut ...she is fantastic..just like the first Romanian Diva ,that puccini made an opera for...

Why is she under pitch? Why is her sound so unfocused? His voice is big and that's fine, just like Tucker before him who was a major Pinkerton. I might add When Leontyne Price recorded this duet with Tucker she didn't seem like she was being overpowered and her voice wasn't bigger than Ghorgy's here. Her sound needs to tighten up if she doesn't want to sound so tentative and under sing as she does here. Also her phrasing is super choppy, the tempo is too fast, the lines are meant to soar. Bad.

Look no one said you could not appreciate Angela Gheorghui, that is your right. It is my right to not like her very much and to express as such on public forums like this one. I
Um, I don't think he 'blew her out of the water' at 5:09. They are equally strong singers, henceforth the casting of this album. Although he can be a bit too overwhelming of a Pinkerton for my tastes and she didn't exactly pull off the
'15'yr old girl in this recording (which is hard don't get me wrong) but Scotto sung it with ease as did Callas.
hahah!Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a smart ass! LOL! I was simply providing a bit of info. This recording is a good one to have in the library though. Anything conducted by Pappano is.

You cannot judge people's tastes.Besides this ifmusical critics(who are always very harsh )think this is not only a superb recording but something very special in comparison with other recordings of Butterfly,I believe you should be a little bit more indulgent.
Well, it ain't Bjorling and de los Angeles but its damn good! I'd buy a ticket to see these two and I haven't really felt that way in 30 years.

ForAll23 1 year ago
@Pollione88
1(2)
Yes, but this is “only” a rehearsal. He might not be so precise in every moment.
If he were forced, there should have been a sign of it in his voice when he went from mezza voce to piano (at 5:34 to 5:37).
No, I know the problem; you just do not like Kaufmann. :-)
ForAll23 1 year ago
@ForAll23 I neither like nor dislike Kaufmann as a person. I like his singing before the year 2000 and I dislike it afterwards. His change of technique brought him tremendous success since he sounds different to other singers. However, he is not the first one to try this, Giuseppe Giacomini and Jerome Hines did the exact same thing and I can't stand their singing either. Listen to Florez, Bjorling, Wunderlich or even Melchior and then to Kaufmann. Kaufmann doesn't sing like a tenor should.
Pollione88 1 year ago 2
@Pollione88
2(2)
In addition...
Sure, sometimes he is a bit forced. On the other hand, almost all tenors force themselves from time to time, with few exceptions, e.g. Mr.Gedda and Mr.Wunderlicht.
ForAll23 1 year ago 2
@Pollione88 - Hello!
1(2)
Okay, you know yourself what you think is best.
You are right, Kaufmann does not sound like classical tenors (e.g. Björling, Schmidt, Kiepura etc). On the other hand, it is a new sound and that gives some other dimensions that I find interesting and beautiful. Perhaps others feel similarly, hence his success.
ForAll23 1 year ago 2
@Pollione88
“a tenor should”…
You have probably, in a sense, right. On the other hand, maybe we now face new tenor era. Thus a new way of thinking about how a tenor should sound. Nothing says that the classical approach was the ultimate.
ForAll23 1 year ago
@ForAll23 I think Kaufmann has success because not many sing like him, he seems special and unique. However, I am interested in the music, the drama and the emotions and can't be pleased with a singer who always sounds dark, heroic, heavy and hooty. I can only be satisfied with singers who are capable of expressing the full range of emotions as required by the music, and sometimes there are delicate or sweet moments in Opera where I don't appreciate if the singer sounds like he is suffocating :)
Pollione88 1 year ago
@Pollione88
3(3)
Finally...
There are regular singers, there are better singers, and there are the great stars. Who is the best among the greatest is only a matter of taste.
However, we must not forget that even the best chess players make bad move sometimes.
We feel what we do and we exchange our feelings (e.g. on YT) and I do like that.
In one way or another we learn and get inspiration of each other and that is, as I see it, very valuable.
ForAll23 1 year ago
@ForAll23 Very well said, art is subjective. I only recently started to dislike Kaufmann with such a passion. It was when I discovered his early recordings on Youtube which imo show his real voice. I love both Bjorling and Gedda (with whom I had like 80 singing lessons :) and I think that all of the greats have their strengths and weaknesses. I think Gedda was above average in Italian music, but truly outstanding in French repertoire. Well, we are lucky to have all the diversity! :)
Pollione88 1 year ago
@Pollione88
2(3)
Today I do not think he was the best, but I think he made some songs/arias better than other e.g. “Holy Night”.
Earlier I also thought that Mr.Gedda way of singing was an academic mumbo jumbo. No force, no real expression, no nothing etc.
Nowadays (after 42 years of listening) do I think that he is/was a great artist, with an outstanding voice technique. He forces his voice almost never.

I do not know if I have any more answers/comment than what has been said.
Maybe one thing; trying, in any objective way, to bring in evidence how a singer should reflect a certain state is probably impossible at this level.
More over…
In my youth I thought that Jussi Björling was the best singer who ever lived. All
who said something else were, more or less, stupid and/or did not understand the metaphysic of the opera.
ForAll23 1 year ago
@ForAll23 I remember someone posting about Kaufmann that he could just as well be singing the contents of a telephone book instead of the aria he was singing and he would equally love his singing. This demonstrates the point I am trying to make. For some people, Kaufmann produces an impressive sound and to them, that's enough. A Tenor shouldn't "sound" a particular way like Kaufmann does, he should let the music decide on the sound depending on the situation. It's called interpretation!
Pollione88 1 year ago
@ForAll23 I always appreciate it,when people like you express intelligent opinions moderately and in a way that is not offensive or insulting and also allows other points of view.Sometimes when I read the comments in YT I can't believe the visciousness repressed violence.The pity w. Kaufman is: it's a good voice, but by trying, not to sing rep. that is "too heavy," but to sing it with preconceived ideas abt. how it "should" sound he will, I fear, get into trouble.But, it's his life.

Mr.Domingo started as a baritone changed to tenor, was it right?
He is not a typical tenor. His voice lacks the tenoral timbre + that his high C is fabricated.
In spite of that is he an amazing artist/singer.
Perhaps Mr.Kaufman sooner or later finds out that his "experiment" did not work so well and that the price was high.
ForAll23 1 year ago

ForAll23 1 year ago
@ForAll23 Absolutely! And the bottom line is: it´s all so subjetive. What is "forcing" anyway? Kaufman gets a little carried away - not surprising with this music! These are all fine artists who have achieved a great deal in their lives. It´s fun to discuss and compare thoughts, but in the end, as a very dear, departed friend mine always used to say: "Una opinione è come un buco di culo - ognuno ne ha uno." Fun talking to you!

Mr.Domingo made his opera debut as a baritone.

Thanks for the compliment, nice
Sure, maybe he is experimenting with his voice, but what is there to say?
We have various opera schools e.g. the Italian and German. Which is right?
ForAll23 1 year ago
@ForAll23
As a student of both, I can honestly for longevity, learn the Italian school. The Germanic is very forceful. It creates massive power and brings a beautiful dark color to your voice. However, after a while it WILL Wear on you your voice.
cardangel16 1 year ago
@cardangel16
I have also heard it through the years. Perhaps are the lyrical voices more sensitive, or certain types of voices are more sensitive.
In general I do not think so much of this- or that school. Every individual should probably "pick" parts of what is right for him/her of known knowledge.
ForAll23 1 year ago
@cardangel16 Could you explain me more about these german technique please?
cantanteporsiempre 1 year ago
@cantanteporsiempre

Bad.

Um, I don't think he 'blew her out of the water' at 5:09. They are equally strong singers, henceforth the casting of this album. Although he can be a bit too overwhelming of a Pinkerton for my tastes and she didn't exactly pull off the
'15'yr old girl in this recording (which is hard don't get me wrong) but Scotto sung it with ease as did Callas.

sincrotto 2 years ago
