I agree with everything you said, except for "mediocre." On Avery Island was better-than-average indie, it just sounded more typical, due to the over-fuzzed production. Jeff Mangum's lyrical brilliance was still there, if you could distinguish it from the sound-collage. Overall, it pales in comparison to ITAOTS, but is better than most other indie shit, then or now. And, I'm not a fan of the genre, period.

As good as this album is, it's nothing compared to ITAOTS. I mean, it's crazy how most bands' first album is usually the best. NMH did it completely upside-down. Jeff Mangum is a gem, though.
