What was your motivation for doing these "vlog" type videos when you were younger when you didnt have websites like youtube and such to share them on?

Another great trip down memory lane! I remember renting video game systems around that time, Nintendo, Sega, Turbo Graphics 16 (anyone else remember that one). And the Canadian $2 bill, haven't seen one of those in years!

Yeah, for such a small town, the 7-11 was LOADED with VHS and game rentals. And that was on top of the Video Store in town! I guess people were bored there. REALLY bored. No surprise, it was a pretty dull, small town. Nice place to live, but not much to do.

It'd be nice if they did that here though, because everyone in my town is EXTREMLY bored! (Look up Welland, Ontario on Wikipedia, you'll see why!)

I've always liked small towns though, not much to worry about, easy to get to know people. It just makes it feel like a community, as sappy as that sounds. =P

Yep. It was a luxury 1-bedroom, basically a 1-bedroom apartment with a HUGE living room and good sized kitchen.

Yeah, they brought them back after a while. but there was a loooong time there where they only had the cheese pumps, and you couldn't load 'em up as much as you wanted.

Yep, good old snail mail! These clips were originally just done for video letters to distant friends. So...an audience of one or two instead of millions. :)

Oooh.... 7-11 we never had those around here. Of course we had convenience stores and they too had tons of VHS rentals... just about everywhere with the floor space did back then. I remember one of the local movie theaters actually had a movie rental store in it's lobby! Those were the days, huh?

Oh god yes, it was the same, well, pretty much everywhere I lived back then too - VHS rentals everywhere there was room for a rack! The thing my friends and I loved, though, was that we could not only rent video games, but the SYSTEMS as well. Whatever we didn't own, we'd rent. Good times!

How do you get this vids from vhs to your computer?

capture card or you can buy a vhs to dvd recorder and do it that way.

I use my Digital8 camcorder as a pass-through time base corrector, feeding the analog output from the VHS machine into the camcorder then Firewire out to the computer. Gives very clean captures, even for really old videos. A lot of the upcoming videos are actually on 8mm tape, so in those cases I just play them in the camcorder and feed straight out to the computer.

i know when i watch old home movies i can do that , its great for picking up weird memories that you were sure were far too insignificant for your mind to keep filed away somewhere, but maybe im reimagining what was there and actually i have forgotten

Hehehe...well, at the time 8mm WAS as good as you could get! Quality-wise it blew VHS out of the water. The resolution was pretty close, but the picture was a LOT more clean and stable, and the colors were much truer to life. Most of the upcoming videos feature footage taken straight from 8mm, so you'll see. :) This one is from a VHS dub of an 8mm tape (a practice I quickly stopped when I realized I wasn't getting the same quality in the dub).
