  • It's upsetting how few people understand Satire...

  • People are stupid... You don't complain about Wayne sayin he wants to fuck every girl in the world but get all up in arms over something like this... This is mad old and I'm still upset about it.

  • It blows me away that THIS song & video caused controversy. Are they serious? Have they not watched any other music videos in the last 10+ years?!? Or do they just not get satire? Or, and I suspect this is the core issue, are these people in whose minds cartoon=(young) children's entertainment?

bloody naive people downright blind to the world...

  • Stupid ass parents... don't they understand anything? Your child wouldn't be seeing the cartoon if he/she were READING A FUCKING BOOK instead. Get your heads out of your asses with this "it's dangerous" bullshit.

  • damn those overly serious overprotective pseudo intellectual parents are a worse stereotype for black people than the filthy negros in the video would be if they WERENT satire and WERENT making a valid point.

which they quite obviously are but I guess some people are just too fucking stupid to get it

  • and instead of the parents bitching about what their kids watched on TV... simple; turn off the fucking TV! my step dad would fucking put a lock in the holes inside the power plug so i couldn't even turn the damn thing on when i got grounded or when he didn't want me watching M+ stuff, don't blame BET, blame your own irresponsibility in raising your own children! (@ those parents bitching and reinforcing their own preconceptions towards the end of the video)

  • the reporter just doesn't get it, he thinks just because its a cartoon it cant have any serious themes or satirical jokes in it. That guy needs to take rod out of his ass, loosen up and look at the rest of the sewer water they got running on BET, but regardless, i'm all for self-expression, be it rap, hip hop whatever!

  • How can anyone with a functional brain and just a tiny bit of wit NOT understand the purpose of this cartoon? It's hilarious, clever, and very gutsy.

My favorite part of the CNN commentary is here: 4:46.

Holy Shit. This guy is just about the last person on the face of the earth to accuse anyone of "missing the point." Buddy, go to the library and pick up some Mark Twain or Voltaire. Expand your mind and learn what satire is.

Bomani is right: READ A MUTHAFUCKIN' BOOK.

  • How do the parents interviewed not understand the satire of this video? The main purpose of a satire is not comedy. When Mark Twain wrote Huck Finn, it wasn't for a laugh.

  • I guess Soulplane is a masterpiece in these morons eyes....

  • lol @ the shitty parents acting like this is the worst thing on bet

  • i honestly have no idea why people were so pissed about this video.

  • BET IS NOT A CHILDRENS STATION HE SENT A POSITIVE MESSAGE WHAT ABOUT SPONGE BOB A GAY SPONGE THATS FOR KIDS WHO COMPLAINS ABOUT THAT. WHAT ABOUT OTHER VIDEOS THEIR WORSE. PARENTS SHOULDN'T LET THEIR CHILDREN WATCH BET YOU IDIOTS DUH

  • I like how they don't say shit about whats been shone on BET everyday over the pass 20 years but as soon as one cartoon comes out telling the truth they wanna get mad and have a serious meeting with parents and put in on CNN fuck outta here people only get mad when it's the truth as a young black girl I feel us black people do need to get are shit together and that's exactly what the cartoon said smh like Will Smith said "Parents just dont understand" lol and btw that Reporter is a real uncle T

  • Why are people taking this so seriously? It's a joke, they need to calm down. They're saying how much garbage it is, but it's a joke, not meant to be taken this literal. I don't see how this is offensive at all. All in all, it's all about how mature your children are. If you don't think your children are mature enough to watch it, then don't let them. I'm 16 years old, I watched the video, and thought it was hilarious, then again I might be more mature than other teenagers. Who knows.

  • Haven't these fuckers ever seen Manga. That stuff gets ruff, and it's for adults. The bottom like is, you need to cut your hours back at work, and invest in your kids. You'd have to be a RETARD to let your kid watch it. Cause it was never for them. It was for every HOODRAT in every ghetto in the world. IDIOTS.

  • People under the age of 18 SHOULD NOT BE WATCHING BET ANYWAYS! If I had kids they would not be watching MTV or BET cause its all about ASS, MONEY, DRUGS, ECT! Its all trash. People need to wake the hell up and what pissed me off the most is when the people who watch BET are all about God. NO. If you were all about God you would see how BET is ruining your race! WAKE THE %$%# UP!

  • CNN suckssssssssss ASSSSS READ A BOOK!!!!

  • It's amazing how much bullshit CNN compacted into 5 minutes.

Who thinks the video is funny? I DO! I'm 21, and I'd rather my future kids watch "Read A Book" than any other crap-rap video on BET.

Who watches cartoons? My whole damn family does, and so do all of my friends.

  • The black parents were rascist,Im white and i know its satire,Also what are they doing letting their kids watch BET?

  • The messages in the song is true and positive, so why get offended?

The song/video is not only directed to children, but to adults to; read a book, raise your kids, etc.

  • @keithpal

I believe the videos message was good.

Its just that he says nigga, motherfucka, god damn, and shit repetitively.

And even if you bleep out the swear words kids still get a pretty good idea as to what he's saying and thats just something a kids shouldn't be exposed to.

Plus the while entire booty shaken part was a little uncalled for since children see this.

    Thats just my opinion.

  • @DaiKozui Well, there are parents who curse worse than this in front of their children.

I've heard worse growing up and it didn't harm me in any way.

  • Strap it on, you know what's coming? :p

  • The parents and black guy from CNN are bought niggas. I applaud the creator of this song and video. The music industry is trash, so the creator of the song sunk to their level with a positive message and this clown from CNN tries to berate the man. Give me a break. How dare you try to attack this person trying to deliver a positive message. What world does host of CNN live in? This CNN hose has always been a joke. If parents were being parents and not friends, then the issue won't exist.

  • I would love to know if BET has sixty non-commercial seconds of material that would be more appropriate for children. I haven't watched that much of it but all i remember is rap about felonies and butt cheek clapping.

  • @ThePythagoran This video is just speaking in our language, if BET can show real butt naked, violence, drugs, etc. then there's nothing appalling about this animation.

  • I would love to know if BET has sixty non-commercial seconds of material that would be more appropriate for children.

  • Read a book. Brush your teeth. Buy land. Yep. Horrible messages, right there.

  • Clear example of so-called negro parents trying to assimilate themselves as upscale so-called caucasians portraying themselves as being appalled by a video because it addresses the problems that face the majority of our people in an animation. BET is filled with videos televising Sex, Guns, and Drugs and people feel uncomfortable because this video slips into rotation? I find it amusing, stop pointing the figure instead of giving a thumbs up to someone making an effort to solve the problem.

  • @BenOZeeb Right.

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA " what messages are black people receiving... i am ok with skeet skeet skeet, and she swallowed it all, but telling them to read what the FUCK IS THIS!!

  • Dats rayciss &shit. black folks don read, we keepin it real.

  • What? Only kids watch cartoons? What! Um, Family Guy, not for kids! South Park, not for kids! The Simpsons, not for kids! Futurama, not for kids! God they're retarded.

  • Damn. Niggas is dumb.

  • I'm kinda irritated that it seems the message of the video went completely over those parents head! On one hand it seems that they are upset because it's only afro-americans in the video. Yet on the other hand they seem to be disgusted by the overall images. I think it was an ingenious way of portraying the truth. Instead of watching and scutinizing what's on the television....... TURN IT OFF AND READ A BOOK!!!!!!

  • the only reason that they have to go to the extreme in making that kind of video is because the situation is so out of hand

  • They on a spaceship, and playing a role, and talking about this video like it was on every hour there were a number of rapper's that showed this and that and there saying read a book?

  • god they market it to the 18-34 year old audience the way shows like south park do. in cartoon form.

  • How can anyone not get the point of the read a book video. It's called a parody. Who is this uncle tom news anchor that doesn't understand the point of the read a book video. I don't understand why the parents are even trippin about this they know when they first saw it they where laughing they want to appear all responsible and shit on tv.

  • Download my "New Classic" Mixtape at notarapper(dot)com

    -Bomani

  • ya the parents and CNN really piss me off by missing the point. they say nothing about all the other negative messages of other rap songs, but when this satire genius comes out, suddenly its Wrong? THATS BS... STFU and take it for what it is

  • theyre not jumping at other rap songs bcuz that song Read A Book is a cartoon and kids watch cartoons.if you pass a kid watching this you wont think twice it would look like any other cartoon to parents. I just think its wrong that they jumpin on this just cuz its made by black ppl when look at Family Guy and the Simpsons...i love those shows bt HELLO!!innapropriate 4 kids there...bt when you go to elementary skools how many kids would say those are theyre fav shows?A LOT! thats fucked up

  • Get the fuck out of here!!! These parents are full of shit! They are fucking missing the point. So it's okay for your child to watch 106 & Park who's songs consist of nothing but sex, drugs, killing and more pussy!!! Hell the kids even sit in the audience and look at how they are dressed and what they are wearing. Teenage girls showing alot of cleavage, boys wearing girls skinny jeans...I mean really. You grown ass black people couldn't see that it was a hit on the videos BET plays as well

  • First of all i am a white 23yr old male college student, and I recognized right away that this was the satire of someone sick and tired of the core values that many of us in this nation take for granted, not being instilled in young black Americans; the argument that if you are not apart of the African American community you will not see this as satire, is ridiculous.

  • Furthermore the round table discussion group of parents gathered by CNN is not likely the target of this videos message; all those present appear to be educated and affluent.

  • niggas is dumb.....the vid was a great idea lisin to wat the radio dude said tht was true but lik bomani said in the 2nd vid.....it was a parody type of thing

  • Read a Book

  • wow, why are people so fucking hard on bomani? that was a great video. clever, funny, and making a good point. sure it had curse words, but that's what made it FUNNY.

  • "Bomani Armah is such a terrible role model, by making a serious of RATIONAL ARGUMENTS" - SWAIM

Bomani's video is dangerous, and irresponsible- telling the black community the values of education, owning property and bettering yourself.

It's SOCIALIST- doesn't he know black people are fine where they are? Stereotyped as ignorant, good-for-nothing, care stereo stealing, crack dealing, urban gangstas who are only good for shooting each other and buying my weed from.

  • hells yeah, swaim is right! bless him!

  • 18-34 year olds watch BET to see videos with booty shaking, bling, rims and bottles of crystal or whatever... so this smart funny guy who wants to make a point about the decline in black culture/ values disguises his message as a typical rap video. Big Deal. If you don't get this then u too should read a mother fuckin book. Bill Cosby has been saying it 4 years.

  • "people who are not in our community aren't going to see this as satire."

That is RACIST! I understand that white people (and non-blacks in general) probably can't fully understand the black community and its issues. But to actually think that we're so dumb that we can't recognize this as satire? Jeez. This isn't the first mock rap video.

Hell, even David Allen Coe made a mock rap.

  • How the hell is that racist. Stop throwin that word around. That's just an assumption that ya'll (non-blacks) are not connected enough to get the underlying message. AND the fact of the matter is: Alot of ya'll aren't. Simple and plain. How many people watched The Boondocks or Chappelle's show and laughed just because of gratuitous usage of the word "nigger". The world likes laughin at black people. Black people are funny. We get it. But truth is alot of people laugh at shit that they don't get.

  • Furthermore, what we see on television, in advertisements, & movies play very heavily on the human subconscious. Sure, you can see this and think "Oh it's a joke." But at the same time, that shit will have an effect on you in your perception and interactions with black americans. We all do it, even amongst blacks. It comes from years of saturated ignorance and obviously its still happening today.

  • The Boondocks wasn't satire? Any subconscious effects of this cartoon are surely less damaging than the effects of rap videos that play these stereotypes straight.

  • Yea, you're right they would be. But BET doesn't do anything to get rid of the stereotypes and probably doesn't want to. Noticeably after it switched from black to white ownership anything truly informative was removed from programming. It basically became a black MTV, only with more showings of Soul Plane. And I don't know if you knew but a video by the artists in the group Little Brother was turned down because it apparenlty was "too smart for it's viewers." BET isn't tryin to help shit.

  • Yeah, BET showed the video for not altogether altruistic reasons. But that doesn't mean that the video itself is a danger to the black community. It means that BET is. And scapegoating this video is not going to make BET any less awful.

  • BET Turned down Boondocks also... and Aaron McGruder made an episode about it... can only be found online or on the DVD.

  • Yea I saw it. The reason it can only be found online or on the DVD is due to heavy pressure on Sony from BET to remove that episode from the season's lineup.

  • Comment removed

  • FOR REALS! I mean that's gotta be the most FUCKED UP shit I've ever heard!

  • So is everyone at CNN a complete idiot?

  • You cannot tell an artist with a positive and encouraging message how to convey that view on culture. CNN is in direct violation of ones freedom of expression and artistic freedom. The only so called "problem" with the piece was the language, I don't understand what peoples problem is with cursing and how it came to be "The worst thing to expose to your children"?

  • So BET would rather let children watch videos about spinning rims, selling cocaine, and women with no clothes on??? This is crazy, the one video with a message and they don't like it. Dumbness!

  • This is why I laugh at the America of today.

  • It's not meant for the children!!! It's meant for the so called adults that made it far enough in life to warrant the production of this video.

Damn it, it's like Al Sharpton putting down the Boondocks. See the deeper meaning you ignorant f***s! If you are gonna be so blind as to miss that, then please lose whatever civility you may have developed and shoot each other dead. Dumbasses.

  • most of these people are whiter than me

  • Funny how CNN edited out the "obvious" parts of it being satire (ex: handing him the baby in the club), and created a focus group of parents who are saying one thing and doing another.

  • keep doing what you doing BOMANI!!

  • ok so this is why i hate cnn they didnt show any parents or anybody period that liked it and the message is READ A BOOK!!!!!!! thats never bad lol they prolly did it that way because the only thing u see nowadays is booty shakin n cussin n stuff...thats wut people like i guess so they used that but instead of wut those videos r usually about they had a positive message i dont understand how the parents can b mad at that, i really dont

  • I would emplore my kids to watch this bc it has a VERY GOOD MESSAGE. There are some GROWN OLD PEOPLE that need to watch this all day.

  • WHY THE FUCK ARE THE PARENTS NOT WATCHING WHAT THEIR KIDS ARE WATCHING??? This is ridiculous! You cannot let TV raise your kids, so YOU must turn the TV off and tell your kids to -- dare I say -- READ A MUTHAFUCKIN BOOK!

  • lol

  • ive never actually be angered by anything on the internet. Have these people seen any of the other trash that is on BET?! What makes this different from any other swearing booty shaking video?

  • it's different because it's marketed to "kids" which is retarded because alot of adults like cartoons just as much as adults. I am willing to bet these parents also let their kids watch South Park too.

  • as a black man, sometimes black people embarrass me.

for once ive been proud of bet, playing something that actually has a good message. and parents are pissed off.

do you even know what your kids are watching when its not this!!! its so much fucking worse!!!

  • Why are people so fixated on this being marketed to kids? It isn't for kids, do kids have babies, can kids buy land? Exactly

Secondly, this has a good message and is intended to make a mocery of of popular culture (namely black pop. culture) which idealizes sex, whores, "grills", rims and being a poor parent figue.

  • What ashemed of them selfs? They made a video to remind the grownups to take some reponsibilty and remember the small things. Im 14 and i have seen the video. I think its a cool and funny video, i say thx becuase it remineded me to put on a speedstick one day. You would think grown ups would see reality from fantasy.

  • They need to stop cuz it was not too long ago...BET had uncut with raw videos....then they need to stop promoting "Girls Gone Wild" Commercials that do come on during those hours.....Hiding the issues will lead your child astray....just like not talking to them about sex and drugs....you are suppose to raise your child,,,,Not Bet or 106 and park....Gosh! Read a Book!

  • Thanks, you have a good point.

  • Wow, this video is so backwards and hypocritical that I cannot even begin to understand the reasoning behind it. They're totally okay with with all the other songs on the countdown, but tell them to read to their kids and suddenly they start a shit storm of possibly the most upside down controversy in the history of man?

And look at that small group of controlled parents they used. Why didn't they broaden the scale to see what people really think? Like try asking the commenters here. =/

  • i dont catch the bad message? they are telling you to read books, by land, brush your teeth, ect., and even if it was bad, ive heard worse messages at school so let it go already

  • What about the regular videos aired on BET, where there are *real* 1/2 nekkid asses shaking, messages of greed and violence being portrayed by *real* famous rappers, and the images being glamorized? THAT is what is disgusting. You people are stupid. And no I don't mean "you people" as in a racial slur, I mean it as in YOU IDIOT ARROGANT PEOPLE WHO THINK THIS IS THE WORST THING THAT'S EVER BEEN AIRED ON BET!!! Get over yourselves. Eeesh.

  • @ajmiller61981 I agree with u because 1st of all, I have seen worse than this and the song/video speaks the truth. Sometimes this is the only way to get these kind of messages across, this song/video does not only go for minors it goes for adults to.

  • @ajmiller61981 There is nothing wrong with this song/video, their just offended because it's the truth.

I am African American and I still admit that there's some truth to this project.

  • ok why are they letting their children watch BET in the first place? Do they not know that this satire is 100x more educational&children-oriented compared to other music videos.

  • The idea of the whole fighting this video is on the scale of protecting their brain washed consumers from truth. They want you to buy rims, they want you to stay ignorant. The same was when Manson fought religion and conventional thought, the same with Lennon with his stand against war. The same for King with equality. I really am starting to hate the minds of conservative, consumer, brain washed, republican type Americans.

  • Hey JackFox,

I think you have it a little backwards. As a republican, I want the black community to succeed. It does me no favors to have a population uneducated and poor. The future of the world economy is dependent on thinkers not ditch diggers. Just ask yourself a couple of questions. Which party wants school vouchers to help families escape failing schools? Which party dominates the educational field? Which party prospers from keeping your community voting for promises never fulfilled

  • Bomani & Tyree are trying to encourage positive change in a very clever way. Unfortunately the people complaining about the cartoon just don't get it and probably don't WANT to get it. It isn't necessarily a black or white problem, there's plenty of stupid people of all races!

  • its just a cartoon let it go they read alot in stuff that they dont need 2. LET IT GO IT WAS NOT THAT BAD

  • jesus christ...

    I'm black, first off.

but WTF?!?!?! Are us black people fucking uneducated to the point where we take a revolutionary point of view to reach the youth of how they should act in life and convolute it to REPLACING childrens shows?!?! I mean first off... IT'S GOD DAM BET. If yo kid is watching BE fuckin T to learn their ABC's you need to read a mutha fuckin book.

Flat out insane... I swear... I thought my race took a step forward with this song but no... idiot parents

  • yow i completely agree with you on this one man....its BET......if they allow their Kids to look at BET, they're gonna see worse shit than that...these people are blowing this shit way out of proportion...being all ignorant

  • Sometimes jokes fly right over people's heads. The satire in this song is so obvious.

  • these parents are idiots. Only two people that have legit points was the guy in the black shirt who said people outside the black community might not see it as satire and the chick in the blue who said i don't like how he delivered it. IF you're letting your kid watch bet like that. then you have issues. the black community pisses me off man.

  • That's like people being mad at Pink for the Stupid Girls video. Unbelievable. BET maybe shouldn't air it at times they wouldn't air anything else equally as ribald.

I'm just shocked. Where's the outrage at the real rappers? The ones with no message! I'm completely floored by CNN's take on this.

  • I'm a somewhat of a fan of hip hop music, and I do realize that it is put into a context that kids today understand. This song is much exactly like the videos played on BET. I'm not black, but many of my friends are. Alot of them have told me that they feel this video address the issues of the black community and that it was long overdue. They feel and have told me numerous times that this is the truth. And my school, which is majority black, most of the student body still feels the same way.

  • It's just too good to be true. All of the people criticizing this video have taken it out of context and totally don't get it.

  • So i guess its not ok to show this video because its a cartoon, but its ok to show a Lil Jon or Nelly video with real half naked women shaken.

  • This song wasn't for kids, so what's the problem?

  • The host sounds exactly like Bill O'Reilly.

  • Ugh, my thoughts exactly.

  • i think im going to go drink water and read a book

  • CNN is the devil

  • 4 REAL

  • Bunch O pussy muhfuckaz that's what they are. How can you knock this song? What about coffee shop or Supaman dat Hoe? Is that supposed to be a good message? Who u think watches that? I'm 19 & I sure as hell don't stupid childish songs without substance. If ya ask me I think Read A Book was long overdue.

  • This is fucking hilarious. OK. So BET-watching kid's parents don't care about real rappers and their models that are shaking their ass on their videos, but then when it is in a cartoon form that totally satires the very crap that BET plays nowadays, they freak out and call it garbage. LOL. Does no one else get how funny this is?

  • I Agree Well Said

  • LMAO!! CNN didnt get it. Totally out of content. I hope alot of kids see this and start reading a BOOK, brushing their TEETH and using DEODORANT. LMAO HELL Grown folks too. This is one good thing BET has done. PEEEEACEE ..i just sent this to my STR8 A 15 yrold Daughter so she can get a laugh. She'll show it to her friends that dont READ A BOOK>

  • parents that worry about stuff like this are not parenting they are throwing their kids in front of the tv so they don't have to take care of em.

  • I really don't see what is wrong with the video. And why are they using so many quotes and mission statements completely out of context?

  • I can't believe this was on CNN! This is ridiculous. They are totally missing the point.

  • These peaple are idiots. That's probably the only intelligent thing I've ever seen on BET.

  • I'm not in the black community, but I figured out that it is a satire.

  • lol their complaining about educational satire, when there were probably worse things on bet, and this only the way to reach children nowadays, even though they shouldn't let their children under 4 watch this lol ignorance

  • Dear Idiot Parents,

Stop using television to babysit your kids.

Why are they watching BET at all anyway?!

Where is the outrage and focus groups against all the vulgar and inappropriate culture that this song set out to parody? The same videos/music your children watch/listen to everyday?? What a joke!

  • Kids get out of school at 2:15/2:30, parents may get home at let's say 4:30 & kids won't listen - go figure.Shows come on at 3:00 & parents are outraged. There was a time when BET was decent but the fact is that it's not owned by Blacks and really not controlled by Blacks, just Black figure heads.Parents shouldn't have to fight these networks for decent programming at 3PM. BET should change it's name to NET for that's who they cater to.

  • haha the interviews are so biased like the didn't find one person that found it funny and true and not "garbage"

  • BAHAHAHAHAHA

i was only 13 when this video came out i understand satire and theses parents dont wow

    these parents are OUTRAGEOUS

youre gonna let your kids watch bet but get mad and uptight then when they are teaching the black community HOW WE LOOK WHEN WE ARE DOING THIS TO OUR SELVES!

  • I am appalled that the real life booty-shaking & bullshit isn't on trial here, but a satirical cartoon TRYING TO BLOW THAT SHIT AWAY!!

  • your children are probably watching porn while ur doing the interview

  • We all know that BET is the cancer of the black community. But for once, they got it right! Read a Book makes fun of the songs that we support and vote onto 106 and Park.

  • cartoons arent for kids.. going outside and playing with sticks are.. at least thats what i did as a kid. i didnt sit inside and get fat and watch cartoons. metalocalpyse is probably my second favorite show.. southpark will always be #1

  • omg ur after my own heart. those are two of my alltime fav cartoons too!!!

    I love D'mite!

White people can satirize themselves and other races aren't supposed to? Isn't that a bit unfair?

Satires of poor, white people that make them look like trailer trash, gun toting, incestous, alcoholics, is cool with everyone, but D'mite is gonna get shit for a satire of what seems to be prevelant in some popular black culture?

  • Anyone who thinks cartoons are only for children nowadays is very mistaken. I'm 26 and love cartoons, mainly ones geared to adults. Like the creators of "read a book" said, if your kids are watching the videos this one video is sandwhiched between then there is already a problem there. Then again as long as they understand that these videos don't portray what they should strive to be in life and their parents actually take a hand in raising them there should be no problem with this satire.

  • Parents need to stop with this "think of the children" shit. The bitch who said cartoons are "for children" needs slapped. Does that mean that things like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park are intended for children? What about Metalocolypse, Venture Bros, Oblongs, Mission Hill, all cartoons, all intended for an older crowd and not children. Animation isn't just for kiddies.

  • The message you're getting is to read a damn book, drink water, brush your teeth, take care of your kids, and wear deoderant. Wtf is wrong about that?

  • CNN should read a mawwfuckin book

  • all of these people are fucking retarded. its a god damn joke with a little true social commentary.

  • Wow...somebody cursed on TV. OH MY GOD!!!

Look if parents are so worried about this, then they shouldn't even be sending their kids to public school. Where there is worse than this being said every day in schools. At least there's a positive message in this song, and people want to take this off the air. Pathetic.

  • I don't see how this video is any different than any other rap song or video. God damn idiots.

  • As an older black teen, I have to say, If parents are letting their young children watch BET with the crap thats been put out in the past several years (It is Viacom, afterall), they've already failed.

    also, "strap it on"?

  • people are so stupid why you even got your kids watching bet...cuz its the exact same thing thats in the video except the message is different...retarted people...think they know everything...than they got this upity black guy...OH MY

  • ok as a african american, im going to say this are these people complete idiots? they complain about the message to their kids and how its going to be their "after school " special. This video isnt meant to replace bugs bunny , its meant to send a messag , and i applaud the producers for making it so blunt and simple . I wish they would make fun of more of the supposed "talented" and popular rappers , and expose them for introducing the element that makes them want the life style in the video

  • BET is NOT a children's channel!! How can these parents say they don't want want their children to watch it on BET?!?

  • CNN is REALLLLLLLY trying to be clever, associating this "cartoon" video with children's shows.

This has DICK ALL to do with fucking KIDS SHOWS.

This music video cartoon was a fucking SATIRE, not made specificallly for little children. It was for older teenagers and people in their 20's (the main people that are apart of the problem that this video is trying to address).

God damn, these "news" stations are such STUPID, sensationalist, pieces of SHIT!

  • Mainstream media is mother fucking retarded.

    End

    Of

    Story

  • I never thought I would see this day. A rap/hip-hop song finally not riddled with the themes of drugs, violence, money, or sex! LOL Go ahead and try and deny it...

  • What are kids who are young enough to have that hurt them doing watching BET? Do these parents think the other videos on BET are somehow MORE appropriate for their children?! This is probably the cleanest video on that channel. The irony is hilarious! They should turn off BET and read a book! :P

  • Those Parents are NAIVE. I work with teens, I watch MTV and BET with them regularly. I those parents honestly believe that this video is that horrible then they need to tune to everything else there kids are watching!

The basic message "Read A Book" etc. is positive. The profanity not so much, but when you try to come at these kids like a PSA they smell it from a mile away!

They shut down. If nothing else, this man most certainly did get a dialogue started! I commend him for his efforts!

  • CNN, you disgust me. I guess there's no hope for you people if you can't take a joke, even if it's true. The liberal media Really makes me sick.

  • Any person with half a working brain can see this video is intended for an older audience. Let's see, the opening scene is of D'Mite in an auditorium with a bunch of highschoolers. Kids in their late teens, Not kids from 6 - 12. Then the next scene is in a club with the message "Raise your kids" How many 12 year olds can you think of who have kids of their own? Next is suggesting you buy land and not spinning rims. Again, how many kids can afford to buy a pack of gum, let alone land!

  • Since when did seaseme street and the electric company come on BET?

I know I don't watch it, but am I that far out of the "loop"

  • These parents are idiotic to the point that it makes me want to throw up. If this satire is so "hideous" and "disturbing" then why not boycott 90% of Rap/Hip-Hop? Secondly, if their kids are watching BET period, then they need to seriously check their parenting skills. Thirdly, when this song first came out, a lot of kids at my school were reciting (albeit they didn't listen to the true message) they understood that it was satire and that it was mocking the ignorant music that BET advocates

  • It always amazes me how black people always worry about how white people will look at them if seen a certain way in media. If someone derives all of their judgment of another culture/race/ethnicity/etc. from the media (which sadly most Americans do) then they are really screwed up. Black people shouldn't be so self conscious. To me that represents a slave mentality of inferiority. We need to be proud of who we are and disassociate ourselves from ignorant niggas.(Ignorant black people are niggas)

  • KRS-One tried to get the youth to read books. Master P, well...he taught you're kids how to make crack like dis. Listen to hip hop and you'll quickly get the idea of which artists read books and listen to music other than rap or r&b. Rap that samples funk, soul, rock, and jazz isn't just more intelligent than 99.9% of krunk trash, but those artists know there's more to life than phat asses and rims. 'Move bitch, get out da way!'

  • fuck all these fags.

they're all crying over some shit like this when they all need to read a book.

    what kinda niggas are these?

    :O.

  • and have your employees READ A MOTHERFUCKIN BOOK while your at it

  • fuck you cnn

  • the parents discussing the topic in this video are more concerned with what white people think of us as people rather than getting this niggas to READ A FUCKING BOOK and do the other things this satrical video recommends. I'm a parent and I'm laughing my ass off. I even made my son who HATES reading look at it, telling him this is how he'll end up if he doesn't develop a respect and appreciation for READING BOOKS.

  • that is SUCH bullshit, are you SERIOUS cnn with comparing this video to fucking sesame street? holy fucking shit, FUCK the news networks

  • dont watch BET fuckin nigs

  • Wow stop complaining you let your fucking kids watch the music videos on BET which are way worse than that video so don't let your kids watch BET you wont have a fucking problem you stupid fucking parents

  • those parents are the ones to blame if 12 year old children are watching BET.

  • R-E-A-D A B-O OKKKKKAYYYY

most (not all) of rap has become trash.

this song puts things into perspective.

    im glad it came out.

  • Most of it has been wack since '95. Obviously there's always underground stuff to turn to, but before '95, you could hear all the good stuff on mainstream radio, and even on MTV.

  • "Read a book" is brilliant, funny, and entertaining. It also delivers an essential message - that mastery of basic social skills is a foundation upon which success in any field depends - in a "voice" that its audience will appreciate & pay attention to. An interesting parallel is "Swinging On A Star", different culture, different era, same basic message. Naysayers need to learn what Social Marketing means...

  • I think that this cartoon is pretty smart. The ONLY WAY you can get a message out and have kids now days to receive them, is the package it in such a way that they fell that it's "KOOL" and are WILLING accept them!

Lecturing does NOT WORK! Open your minds parents!

  • The fact that this great song and video is viewed differently is fucking stupid. I fucking wish that people would fucking get a clue.

  • fools... this is a perfect cartoon video if your kid is already watching the garbage on BET. If you're truly concerned about the negativity contained within the cartoon then your kid shouldn't have been watching BET to begin with.

  • Read a book, not a sports page or a magazine;

    Raise your kids;

    Your body needs water, so drink it;

    Brush your teeth, wear deodorant;

    Buy some land.

    That's just good life advice!

  • OMG, people actually watch Class of 3000...!? :|

  • 3:29-3:34 " i have to watch to make sure my kids dont see negitive messages" yeah well im pretty sure the fuckin songs called read a book sounds like a good message to me. also why the fuck would BET need sports credability?? and at 5:07 no education.. teen sumit, 1. Read the song title and the lyrics tells you main points in life 2. who the fucks gonna listen to a dude tellin kids to do that cause they better have like Michael Jordan or somthin sayin stuff or im pretty sure no ones gonna listen

  • I think the biggest point that parents who are freaking out are missing, is the fact that the cartoon features garbage, however it is the exact same garbage that fills the rap videos before and after it on the TV.

I love the focus on the crude booty shaking. Have any of these people watched rap videos? They have the same thing with REAL booty.

I see nothing wrong with having the exact same type of garbage in a cartoon if it helps people realise that what they are watching all day is garbage!

  • there's no better way to get the message across, 3million views on youtube, beat that shit

  • "Raise your kids, raise your kids, raise your goddamn kids." I think that is what needs to happen here.

  • nova, you couldn't said it any better

  • These are he kid of black people that keep other black people do there is nothig wrong with the message or the way i wich it was portrayed ad the fact that they are picking at a video that tells pople to wash they'r asses ad read is unreal cosiderig very thig inbetwee is of half aked wome ad me objectifyig them why are these people even allowig childre to watch bet i am so disgusted ad i hop and pray that this dose become the replacmet for the mid numbing bull shit that i out now
