Yeah, it's very picky about what ROM you use, unfortunately it is illegal for me to link you to a working one but if you keep looking you might find someone that makes it work. (google is your friend)
Better safe than sorry on that. It's better to be legal on the emulation subject. I do have a question for you, do you have a copy of the US/Japan version of super metroid? If not than pretty much all of your runs could be clasified as contraband.
Do you keep the standard controls when playing on console or do you change them? Personaly when playing I use a Megaman X esque setup where y is to shoot, b is to jump, a is to run, x is item cancel/unused, and the L and R angles are swapped.
Yeah, the original controls are uncomfortable. I do understand why you keep the controls the same in your TAS's though, it saves frames. Which reminds me, do you use keyboard or controller for your TAS's?

I change dash to X, jump to A, shoot to Y and item switch to B. The original setup feels uncomfortable for me.
