Also I went to your page and couldn't find your symmetry modifier video. I'm having an issue with my symmetry modifier where nothing I do is replicated on the other side and I've no idea why
As soon as i select "vertex" my mirror image disappears, ive tried all possible combinations of "show copy" and "show end result on/off toggle" but nothing works, it keeps disappearing. What do I do?
@wannabeers Does sound like a show end result problem. What version of 3ds max you using? The little light bulb image next to the mirrior is on, and show end result is on. Should work :S
@Eddievedda1 i just tried reloading 3ds max and now it shows the vertex lines on the left side, and the object on the right, but not the object on the left side, what do i do now then?
great tutorial, but you move too fast, if it's for newbies i think not a lot of people can actually keep up with the speed you move those vertexes....you're not a fast talker you just model too fast.....
hey i have a problem but i cannot explain it its like a cuadricle alignment and the things that i move moves too fast with only move the mouse a littlebit you can give me your e-mail to send you the photo of the problem, please
@juanfjimenez9 Sounds like you may be in ortho vew mode. Select the viewport and then press "P" to get it back into perspective. Or "F" for front ect ect depening what you want. If that dont fix it, feel free to drop me a PM :)
in 3dsmax ive been struggling alot when making my charcaters since the ctr+x command doesnt make the items transparent any idea what could be wrong someone?
@rustytoe178 In the modify pannel on the right, below the stack is a little button that looks like a test tube, called show end result. Click that and it will stay ;) Good luck.
@Tauronos select and edge running perpendicular to where you want another segment to be, click "ring" at the top of the pannel, it will select all the edges in a ring around your head. Click connect and you have split another loop in ;)
@Tauronos its not essential, because you can rescale them with the select and uniform scale tool. But it makes it more accurate if you edit your pictures in gimp or photoshop to be the same scale before you start :)
I think it's because my comp is slow. It shouldn't be considering I have 4gb of RAM and 700 gb of hard drive space. Does the proccessor play a big part in the performance of this software? Maybe graphics card?
@CoDisafishy Yea with max your going to need a good processor - quad core really. Im looking to upgrade my AMD Phenom quad core to the Phenom Hex core to be honest.
And the best graphics cards for max are NVidea (IIRC) because of the drivers being more compatible or something. Direct-X. Gameing cards arent so great - though im not a techy and im sure someone knows more about this than me :P
@CoDisafishy you graphics plays some part..... some games on my PC lag because the Graphics card doesn't meet their requirements but everything else does( mine a Nvidia Ge-Force 7025... lags on games like Oblivion). Also i have 2Gb and a 3.1Ghz dual core AMD processor and 3ds max runs smoothly. which confuses the crap out of me.... also be aware that Google Chrome and Firefox... can use crap-loads of CPU (over 400k).
Your going to say your way is better then mine and visa versa, lol, lol, this is so true is it not? I see it as there are many ways to do one thing and no ones way is better, mabey better for them I guess.I think your way is easier and faster.
well I've been using blender for about 2years and max for and hour lol im trying to learn but blender was always so good about workflow and max just dose thing very oddly but I know thats just me. I think I keep using blender to model but I'll use max as an export tool for UDK ;D
I prefer to plane model heads I find the result you get in terms of accurate detail much better than box modeling
@ashow11 I thought most people paused the video anyway. But new tutorials shall be slower as my account has been upgraded so i can upload longer vids now =D
Sorry, I do know this is a noob question but I was just wondering, how do you make the X, Y, Z mover yellow again. I am using the 2010 version. It has turned gray when I try to move objects around or even manipulate them, how do I turn it back to yellow? Thank you.
@Oblivion2550 Common problem really. Three things - use a bigger image with higher DPI res. (change in photoshop when you make a new doc). OR use a clearer image with bold lines in black and white which will take the quality loss in max. OR ajust your graphics card settings may help. Good luck.
This is simple to do in theory, but it's significantly harder in practice. You just need to keep trying, really, getting used to the process. I'm a total beginner, and even I can see that. Literally all I can do is lathe various objects and apply a glass texture! XD
@ScottieAxeman4ever make 2 planes, one in the left view port and one in the front view port and press M then drag and drop you picture into one of the bubbles then drag from buubles into the planes job done
i'm stuck at 1:00, where you are pulling the vertexes. I can only pull one vertex at a time, where the rest of the vertexes behind the first one remain in the same place, what did i do wrong?
@hohoyun Drag a selction box around them, or if you are doing that and it doesnt work still. Click the ignore backfacing box off in the editable poly rollout on the right of your screen. :)
dude, wait you need to explain more. like what buttons you click to do things. I can't model my head if I don't know how to rearange the verticales or whatever.
@BigdogWitBigdog Try the beginners tutorial on my channel ;) after that you should get familliar with the interface. This is slightly more advanced than for beginners, kind of presumes you know the interface.
hi can you make a simple tutorial to show animation of how can we apply smile and angry on a mouth of a character ?and what type of reactor used for this purpose?is it the ( morph)??
Hey. I'm kind of new at this so I don't really know how it works. How do you get the pictures on the autodesk.... Could you explain? I got autodesk 2011.
@Eddievedda1 Yeah I already checked and it helped alot. Thanks to your vids I'm actually getting the hang of it. It's going to be a group of like 10 people working on this one project (a 3d animation movie). Getting the autodesk 3ds 2011 was pretty hard cause of the price. But now that I have it i can work on the 3d models. For the movement and animating, do I need any other software or does it all work on 3ds 2011?
@TheBlooDHunteRz You can animate on max or autodest do some other nice software called motionbuilder. Thats easily compatable with max and handy too ;)
What command or method did you use to delete the vertecies and still retain the solid geometry, because every command i have tried just deletes them without joining the points?
Very good tut's! I do polygon modelling, but this way is great too and I must say I have learned a lot from you.
ps. Plural of vertex isn't vertexes, but vertecies. Just one observation, no offense intended. My English isn't perfect as it isn't my first language, but vertex is technical term used a lot in 3d modeling. Since this tut has educational purpose, im pointing out that so newbies watching this vid's learn that right. I know a few 3d pro's who would kill ya for saying vertexes lol :)
Wouldn't it be easier to use a picture of a human skull to get the bone structure more accurately and then edit the basic skull shape to look like a face (adding flesh sort of). Cause like this i think most people will just create the same face as the one on the picture thus losing their creativity . With a skull you just have a basic shape of a head that can later be turned into any face you want.
I agree that using a skull would be a better base for a generic head then people could flesh it out to create their own heads. But this is aimed at beginners ;) so simply copying the head here and learning the methods is a good start i guess
Yes i forgot it's a tut for beginners, even tho i am a beginner at this too. The method you explained is very similar to a method i use in corel to create a vector image, we call it tracing. So applying the means is easier for me then for people who's first contact with graphics is 3dsmax. Which in my opinion could prove itself very demoralizing since the interface is confusing for me too at this point. Luckily there are people like you willing to spend some time and share knowledge, thanks :)
Yea it probably helps if you have some knowledge of 2d drawing packages. Is corel pretty good? I just brought photoshop to start learning how to texture decently.
People push adobe illustrator for vector design but i find corel to be easier and more intuitive. Curve control is more fluid and a lack of some illustrator options is nicely made up with a simpler UI.
The first time I tried this tutorial. I had no idea how to use my 3ds max program. So, I saved your tutorial in my favorites and bought a book "Introducing 3ds max 9 3d for Beginners" . I have done simple tutorials and learned in much detail of the user interface of 3ds max. Now I am makeing the attempt of modeling a head using your tutorial. If you don't mind I would like to post it to you when i am finished for your critique.
Thats fine. Id be happy to take a look. For a better method, check out My plane modeling video. Although it is slightly more advanced - it does give better results that deform better when animated or morphed.
Hi devils, there isnt really a manual as such. but if you open the program, then go to the top bar, on the right hand side there is the "Help" menu. Select this and click on "Tutorials" start at the beginning and try and work through these basic tutorials.
and with those smoothing groups.. i see that you click the first one but i dont see what you click before clicking on the vertex because it doesnt get smooth for me.
hi, one more question :P im still on my dino quest, and when im going to model it from the side the segs dont show on the box on the side picture even when i have the edged faces on and has pressed f4. whats wrong there?

I meant that vertecies is used inside 3d graphic area, not everyday language.
FlyingMistake 2 years ago
Ahh yea, i keep saying that lol. Ill make a effort to use correct grammar next time ;)
Thanks for pointing it out anyway
Cheers

@FlyingMistake The plural of the word vertex can be said both ways, FYI.

TheBloodForged 2 years ago
I agree that using a skull would be a better base for a generic head then people could flesh it out to create their own heads. But this is aimed at beginners ;) so simply copying the head here and learning the methods is a good start i guess
Eddievedda1 2 years ago
Yes i forgot it's a tut for beginners, even tho i am a beginner at this too. The method you explained is very similar to a method i use in corel to create a vector image, we call it tracing. So applying the means is easier for me then for people who's first contact with graphics is 3dsmax. Which in my opinion could prove itself very demoralizing since the interface is confusing for me too at this point. Luckily there are people like you willing to spend some time and share knowledge, thanks :)
TheBloodForged 2 years ago
Yea it probably helps if you have some knowledge of 2d drawing packages. Is corel pretty good? I just brought photoshop to start learning how to texture decently.
Eddievedda1 2 years ago
People push adobe illustrator for vector design but i find corel to be easier and more intuitive. Curve control is more fluid and a lack of some illustrator options is nicely made up with a simpler UI.

yes howdid you put in that face picture

The first time I tried this tutorial. I had no idea how to use my 3ds max program. So, I saved your tutorial in my favorites and bought a book "Introducing 3ds max 9 3d for Beginners" . I have done simple tutorials and learned in much detail of the user interface of 3ds max. Now I am makeing the attempt of modeling a head using your tutorial. If you don't mind I would like to post it to you when i am finished for your critique.
thank you

Thats fine. Id be happy to take a look. For a better method, check out My plane modeling video. Although it is slightly more advanced - it does give better results that deform better when animated or morphed.
Good luck

devils173 2 years ago
Hi devils, there isnt really a manual as such. but if you open the program, then go to the top bar, on the right hand side there is the "Help" menu. Select this and click on "Tutorials" start at the beginning and try and work through these basic tutorials.
Good luck.

and with those smoothing groups.. i see that you click the first one but i dont see what you click before clicking on the vertex because it doesnt get smooth for me.
