  • Hi

    Thanks for this video.

I was watching another video and the person had

    300 gallon tank

    80 tilapia fish

    and some mosquitofish

He said to shock the fish in salt water once a week

I was wondering if you had problems like parasites and when you lift them out of the water do the fish get stressed and die

  • nice love the idea simple n effective

  • Check out my system on my channel DJT77816

  • Hi, Where do people into aquaponics usually get the various containers that are used? Are the plastic barrels usually from the food service industry?

  • @tmc200527

    Hi,

We purchased ours at a Farm and Ranch Feed Store. In our area they used to be filled with grape juice concentrate. Hope that helps.

  • @tmc200527

You can also use other containers (totes, aquariums, PVC pipes, homemade stuff, etc.) to build an aquaponic system. The barrels can often be bought on Craigslist and are pretty cheap relative to their size.

  • Beware of bill S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010! If accepted [S 510] would preclude the publics right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes! Your aquaponics system will become illegal!

  • @hyperkinetic wow, that is a scary thought, thanks for the heads up, I am not political at all, how can I vote against this?

  • I've heard lava rock isn't a very good grow medium, throws off the ph, cool setup though. I plan on building one quite similar.

  • We have never had a problem with the pH. I was washed thoroughly before using and the info we have says it is inert. Like using glass. Maybe it depends on what kind of lava rock.

  • Thankyou for sharing I have been watching your videos

  • Saw the updated ones. They look good. Couldn't set up the system last weekend as planned. Something came up. Now scheduled for tomorrow! Can't wait!! Thanks again for all the info.

  • When the beds fill water it is also forced up the siphon loop until it reaches the top of the curve. The siphon loop top curve is set to the water level you want in the grow bed. When the water reaches the top curve it begins to flow through the loop with force so it empties faster than the beds can fill. When the loop finally draws air the siphon action is broken and everything repeats. Watch the last half of my video titled "May 19th 2009 Urban Mini Farm Update" for more info.

  • Got it. Thanks.

    Just a coupla questions more:

    1. Do you keep your pump on continuously thru the day and the night? 2. How many fish do you have in the barrel (looks like a 200 ltr barrel to me)? Will be nice if you can post a video update on this once you get some plants!

  • Hey Thanks a million! Got the idea.

    Just 2 more doubts:

    a. Do you keep your pump running non stop or is it on a timer or something?

    b. How many fish do you propose to put in that barrel (looks like a 200 ltr barrel to me)?

Hope you are going to post an update once you have plants in there!

  • Pump runs all the time. Some studies suggest that starting and stopping pumps wear them out faster than letting them run. It takes about 20 minutes to fill the beds, then about 5 to drain. The siphon breaks and it starts over. I plan on 20 to 30 tilapia or catfish. It has about 15 goldfish currently. I did post updates since I introduced plants into the growbeds, and some videos of the details of the system. Enjoy, we are!!!

  • Very interesting. Can you tell me how does the syphon work ? How has it been set up?

  • Take a look at my updated detail videos and it will explain it better I think.
