Otto of Brunswick is symbolically depicted as the man of pride, vanity whose little move of hand, as if, causes other people to starve. I find this particular scene a reference to tyrants in general, particularly Hitler and his visit to Florence which Zeffirelli referred to in his autobiography. Great movie, great director
