  • Patti.

You just kill me with this one. So sweet!

  • ahhh i see it's a gay-thing, a lesbian thing, bad man-ish gruff 'singing' right?

  • @MrJaysync not necessarily.

  • @tricyclesinskirts are you sure?

  • @MrJaysync yes.

  • @tricyclesinskirts nope, it's quite clear, manly, gruff, this is lesbian iconography 1-0-1. don't get me wrong though saw her live this year and she spat Gloria something hellish, one of the realest things i've ever seen.

  • @MrJaysync i agree with you up to a point. the whole manly, gruff thing is a stereotype and does not necessarily mean that a woman who sings that way is a lesbian. she sang that way because that's the way her voice sounds, not out of a need to assert her sexual orientation, which is straight anyway. i'm sure a lot of women, some lesbians, emulated her just because she was so different at the time. patti's own style was inspired by rock and roll hero worship (jim morrison, keith richards etc)

  • yes. she's a living goddess.

  • OH PATTI PATTI HOW I LOVEEEEEEEEEEE YOU FOR SHARING YOUR ART!

  • this song will get me bi

  • there will never be anyone else anywhere near like her

  • god i love patty on this song she sung it so sadly and beatifull

  • I don't know why, but I had this sudden urge to hear Patti sing this song, which I once had on my Teenage Perversity bootleg 20 years ago!! I actually thought it was called LINGER ON. Anyone out there got Teenage Perversity? Would love for someone to swap it with me for something else, because my copy was stolen.

  • ik heb ghuild bij dez4 liedjes komt van het album horses maar wat heb ze dunne armen eric bloom speelt de leadgitaar mooie is pissfactory echt r&r

  • maaaaan I LOVE great music!!

  • How can you critisize Patti ? She's awsome, beautiful soul and personnality, i love her.

  • Patti, Lou and punk rock, love 'em all!

  • @missZiggy549 I know rock and roll, Tell you what, there are a few bands you should check out, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones, these guys could play purely excellent tune and match it with vocals that actually add something, rather than dominate and subtract. Let me know what you think of them...

  • @dannylmeats I know them all, and I also know that at least one band member in each and every one of these groups have honored Patti Smith one way or another. John Cale for example produced her first album, horses, and Jimmy Page once said that Patti overpowered them all. You have a good taste of music, it suprises me that you missed to see the talent Patti Smith has. I think you should listen to the album tracks of Gloria and So You Wanna Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star, Try it out, give it a chance.

  • @missZiggy549 I understand Rock and Roll, i love the stuff. This ain't it. I had to come back on this page to respond and was again amazed at how bad she sounds, if she's got something no one else has, lucky everyone else.

  • @dannylmeats If you knew rock you wouldn't insult a woman like Patti Smith.

  • I've heard the name Patti Smith but never heard much of her stuff. I'm a big fan of Lou Reed and the VU, i like the guitar on this, but the vocals are abhorrent.

  • @dannylmeats abhorrent? Then you don't don't uerstand rock at all. Patti smith is a godess, a ledgend. Why? cuz she has something no one else have.

  • she was so beautiful

  • @amabille16 she still is

  • @amabille16 she still is

  • my world was your guitar and love was the drug i got high on as i sipped on your pale blue eyes at dawn and now i search the world and mourn again and again and again. - peaceiloveyou2 poetry
  • this is awesome. i think Jon Cale (one of the founders of and a long-time member of the Velvet Underground) may be on bass, i could be wrong but i do know that Patti Smith and John Cale did a lot of work together, beginning in 1973, and he produced a Patti Smith Group album too. so wonderful. im crying and thats a good thing. if you watch this and dont feel anything you're dead.

  • @shiningarainbow John Cale produced Patti's first album "Horses", but he did not play a tour with her. On guitar is Lenny Kaye, on bass Ivan Kral, on drums Jay Dee Daugherty. Lenny and JD are still with her.

  • @whsonic yes, mm...I can't see... but isn't it lenny on bass? don't think Ivan Karl is on stage here. I don't know what Jon Cale looks like, but it might be him.

I have heard that Jon went with her on a tour. That might be rumors, hwo knows, but if it's true this might be the one.

  • @missZiggy549 I'm sure that this is Lenny on guiter (4:33). John Cale never was so skinny. And when you look at 4:37, it's Ivan on bass (google him in google images).

I just read that John Cale toured for a while as Patti's opening act (I always thought he played only at a few shows in NYC, like on the "Live at the Bottom Line 1975" bootleg). So it could be possible that he joined her band for a few songs at each or some shows even outside New York.

  • I must add I am both an avid Patt and Velvet Underground/Lou Reed fan and whether or not she was right about Lou Reed writing it "for a Swedish boy he once knew," Lou Reed and Patti Smith are friends who respect each other to this day and I plead that everyone will never be music snobs and be what Lou Reed/Velvet Undergound and Patti Smith and such great people who are all about the music well..be all about the music and just relax, relax, they don't care about such minor things some argue about

  • This is one of the greatest things I've seen. I'm crying, and that's a good thing - feeling much healing and wholeness. Thank you for posting and sharing this video. Beautiful. Lou Reed surely loves this. I've heard Lou Reed and Patti Smith are friends to this day. I wonder if they will ever work together. In any case, both are great. If anyone doubts Patti Smith is a living legend who has long been healing hearts with music through her originals and making the best covers in the world, watch <3

  • too good!

  • God I love that woman. She's such a legend.

  • i love her shirt. and her & the song too of course..

  • Thank you so much for sharing this. It's breathtakingly powerful and beautiful

  • thanks for this great video, and this fucking hair-raising song!

    thousand thanks

    :)

  • great!

  • I used to have a bootleg LP of this performance. I have been looking for it for years.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • I had it on tape for years, 'til it snapped. Luckily, I found it elsewhere on the 'net. I do have another bootleg lp of hers from roughly the same period.

  • linger on pale blue eyes

thought of you as my mountain top

thought of you as my peak

thought of you as my everything that i had but ijust couldnot keep

    linger on pale blue eyes

    makes me cry every time

    I LOVE YOU PATTI SMITH

may you linger on for eternity

thank you for ALL of it patti

  • Hell yeah, and that's not saying much because MOST music blows these days.

  • I love all Lou Reed's and Patti's work. Put them together and this is heaven!

  • You're my little patti smith.

  • Moved. Patti is No.1

  • Whose on bass? Both Ivan and Lenny seem to be on guitar here.

  • Saw her perform this on May 1, 1978 in Portland Oregon. The show only cost 1$ She fucking tore it up!

  • Beaitiful song, well done!

  • she is not drunk...she is the best

  • im new to patti but wish i could have spent my life with her she is fabulous

  • my first gig was the PSG in 79 when i was 15. fantastic. through her i got into so many other things. mostly trouble ; )

  • even when she's drunk her voice sounds great

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you! i've never hears a better cover by anyone.

  • superbunny !!!

  • l'ho sempre detto a mia madre: "io dovevo nascere al posto tuo!"

  • Fantastic!!!

  • UNICA!!!!!

  • I hate the word "cool", but Patti Smith is so cool. I can watch this over and over again and she is breaking me to pieces each time.

  • whats up with her t-shirt, does anyone know?,

    awesome vid bte, thanks!

  • thanks

  • She still is awesome.

  • fucking awesome.

  • great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i think this is great

  • A goddess. Thank you very much!

  • is there anything better than a great song sung with such raw power and passion?

  • Patti Smith & Band make my world happier! Her voice and their insruments have so much raw energy.

  • I think it's more part of her poetry- it just kinda flows you know?

  • Fucking WOW!

  • Miss Patti!!! You are one of a kind. So inspirational, organic and innovative. Your music feeds my soul. Your presence is sacred.

    You are a Goddess.

  • Or a boy. It's just a guess. But I don't think accuracy is crucial if she was being cheeky. She also might not know where Nico was from. *shrug*

They didn't have Wikipedia back then.

  • I think she was just taking a pretty sly dig at Nico for jilting Lou. Pretty funny- especially following it up with Louie Louie. Excellent video.

  • Patti rulessss!! does anybody knows where i can find the lyrics for louie louie???thanx!

  • Qui peut le faire en 2008 ? It's only R&R !

  • nobody sing like patti she touches you soul and makes it weep holes version is crap

  • LOVE Patti!!! She's amazing... just love her.

  • Reed wrote this for Shelley, one time love of his life, late 60s.

  • I love this version. Of course the original is a classic, but I like how she sings it differently to Lou Reed's quiet, mumbled vocal.

And no woman ever looked as cool in a t-shirt as Patti Smith.

  • Rock chick in a t-shirt? Man, she invented it.

  • ARRESTING. she injects that unique quality which makes this really cool.

  • i think this is great

  • Un lyrisme fornidable!!! Merci!

  • Agreed.

  • The first time I watched it, I couldn't agree more. Awful. And then it started to haunt me...and I had to listen to it one more time, and then one more time, and then I gave up. She's got something. She's got it.

  • I agree, minty girl, Patti brings something quite new to this, a sense of pain that doesn't really come out in the original. Trying to sing it like Reed would have been a dumb idea - you can't really top the original, so best to take it in a different direction.

  • Perfectly said. I don't know why everyone disagrees with you.

  • Yeah, I dunno either. I listened to it again, and I'm still right. ;)

  • wow this is effin awesome. patti is still the bomb. too bad the same can't be said of Courtney. and it's Hole's version not just C.Love's

  • My first encounter with this song was Courtney Love's version. ( I guess the first cut is the deepest because every other version does'nt work for me.) Another product of the faceless generation-x I am. Oh-well-and-merry-f*cking-hell.

  • Zaps

I saw this tour in Amsterdam in an ice hockey stadium. terrible surroundings, but patti made it worthwhile. Thanks for thios video which briongs back good memories

  • i love patti!!

  • patti is wonderful

  • I like velvet underground. But this is a much better version.

  • A good while back at the REM concert Washington DC Mike Stipe claimed Lou wrote it for/about Hank Williams!

  • Ha ha. Patti. Listening to this I realized how a singer like Patti couldn't exist without someone like Bob Dylan before her. Dylan, like Patti, doesnt have a great voice in the conventional sense.

  • Maybe Patti sang it for a Swedish boy. So, maybe, it was, sort of, artistically, metaphorically, as-far-as-Patti-was-concerned-written-for-a-Swedish-boy. Oh; post-modernly-too.

  • Good grief, you sound like me! No one ever has before. Good luck and fare thee well; it can leave a strain sometimes if I'm not sort of careful. Post-Meta-dewy epiphany-modern realism with a good story in for fair measure.

  • He actually did NOT write this song for this Swedish boy. Shelly, a college girlfriend of his provided the subject matter.

  • I've been also surprised by that... Anyway very nice cover!

  • i thought it was nico?

  • I'll be your mirror is about Nico and as far as I know (I've read 3 books on the VU) that's the only song Reed wrote about her.

  • Yes True.

Pale Blue Eyes was about Loues old university sweetheart named, i think, shelly.

  • Whoever it was about actually had hazel eyes.

  • "all tomorrow's parties" too.

  • That's sort of a general description of the nightlife of New York at the time (the mid 1960s). It was actually written before Reed, Cale, and company had even met Andy, let alone Nico.

  • ive heard (but dont know) that this song was maybe written about the Velvet Underground drummer, maurice tucker

  • maurice? ... maureen tucker. :]

  • Not true. It's a bout a university girlfriend called Shelly. Lou meet up with her again once she was married, but she snubbed his advances. This was about the time of the third velvets record. Another song written with her in mind was Perfect Day.

  • thanks for posting this awesome swedish concert. missed it on tv.

  • I also missed it on tv, but I still remember it as one of the greatest concerts!

    You figure it out...

    ;)

  • thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou...CatK

  • Kool! Thanks!

  • great tricia, nearly as good as the original

  • nice version... great patti smith

  • this is AWESOME, a Patti cover of Pale Blue Eyes!! I saw her on Jay Leno last night, and she was wearing an Adult Swim hoodie!! heehee!

  • WOW, this is great - thanks.
