  • Great background music. Video shows people oblivious to nature, people to busy/absorbed in their lives to notice (the cyclists) and you (the film maker)

    Nice one.

  • This may be as close to seeing real fireflies as I'll get in my life.

Thanks for putting up such a beautiful video.

  • Wow. Thanks for this. I have always wondered what they really look like and have yet to see any in real life. Probably never will due to where I live. They're beautiful.

  • I have never seen one in my life.

  • ugh! i love fireflies sooo much! i havent seen them in years though :(

  • I love them so much!! It makes me sad and angry to think they are in such dire straits because of human actions. There are nearly none left near my home, but I'm glad to see there are places where they can still thrive. Thanks for sharing!

  • Yes, they seem to be.

  • They're cars....

  • OH lol jeez I didn't see it until you mentioned.

  • cars

  • Now I did gave a second better look and those little things at the top, are cars passing on a road above.

But it´s good to see that fireflies are doing ok on this place.

  • When I was a kid in Alabama me and my brother use to catch them in a jar and put them in our bedrooms at night thinking that they would give us a room full of light. It never worked but I can still remember laying there watching them flicker in that jar. There are not as many as they use to be because of the poisons used. So glad there are still a few around..

  • now that i think of its been over 10 years since i've seen fireflies, even when im out in the country where they usually are.

  • well done!

For the one person that asks about catching them. First you must be a kid (Sorry grownups thems the rules) with fast legs, and then to make the capture you must use only your hands. No nets or other apparatus can be used as that is bad form.

  • Thanks, c9ari. good advice. I briefly hung out with one on the 4th of july in riverside park. she was a few feet above my head, so I stretched my arm upward, and in a bit she landed (and lit). saw a chubby kid in the park having caught one, him cupping Mr. Firefly and yelling to anyone who would listen, "I caught a dragonfly!" I said, let me see; no, that's a lightning bug -- and he got so scared he repeatedly brushed it away from him. Long live the firefly! Treat him/her gently...

  • @c9ari you don't have to be a kid.

  • i saw one just now...

  • I still have fire flies here in Claymont Delaware USA. Only because we fight to keep open spaces that hold trees & dense bushes & under brush. And I plant stuff to give habitat to anything. Fire flies need trees, bushes, tall wild grasses.... notice in the video they are all fkying around at the edge of dense vegitiation. Let your home area be overtaken with cement & buildings & no vegitation, no trees, no bushes, no grass & there will be no fire flies.

  • Beautiful video featuring magical little insects! You may be happy to hear that they're flourishing in my area. There seem to be more now than when we were kids! 5 stars!

  • Lovely video, tx.

  • I haven't seen fireflies in a long time

  • I love fireflies!! Great vid!!

Question : what's a good way to catch a few???

  • Don't catch them, they'll die and then no one will be able to see their magic!

  • Hi Sicilian; You might "rent" them but vercher722 is right; please don't catch them. As kids we'd put our arms out into their midst and they'd land on the forearm.

  • Once on the forearm you can get close and look, even pet them very lightly, and after a while they get it into their minds to spread their wings and fly. go figure!

  • Lovely video, I can't seem to find fireflies in my area anymore! I live in NYC as well :). Just wondering though, why is it under "Comedy"? ¬¬

  • Why could'nt I have been born in New York..?

  • so beautiful...and calming...=]

  • Nice After FX use.

  • Hey, under;

This is 100 per cent fireflies; no fx.

  • haha u got told underfrog

  • amazing

  • Go to Firefly FAQ (Google It). This site will answer most your questions about fireflies. Enjoy :-)

  • I can't wait to watch them when we go camping at the lake this Summer :)

  • I think fireflies are one of the best things about summer. They just make the night seem so magical.

  • Thats so damn beautiful

  • 0.22 nice ass lol

  • Thank you very much, this sort of vision will soon be history. The generations to come will miss this side of nature.

  • Ahhh... doom and gloom... People like you always feel the need to come across all depressive.

  • Then my friend perhaps you do not understand the distinction between gloom and pleasure. Maybe you feel gloomy while lying under the sun in winters? Or maybe you are one of those gizmo freak who prefers to stay within a cage with all that technical garbage lying around you.

You are a part of nature itself, you can't run away from it.

May god help you. I know what I like.

  • Thanks Nart53 for sharing.

    5*!!!

    Hugs. Maria Inês.

  • "vaga-lume" is in Brazilian Portuguese, the real name for fireflies in portuguese is "pirilampos"

  • Spanish: Luciernagas

  • Too bad we don't have fireflies in Prague like home in the DC area. They're gorgeous, aren't they?

I'm trying to learn the word for firefly in as many languages as possible. Can't imagine a nicer and more harmless word to blurt in any situation.

  • Hi Pang5 and all firefly fans; Here's what I found. Most translations are pretty, except for Croatian: svitac. Here are the rest I was able to get: French: luciole; Italian: lucciola; Dutch: vuurvliegje; and my favorite,

    Portuguese: vaga-lume.

  • Lovely! Thanks!

Here's what I can recall and some are transliterations:

Armenian: lusatiktik, Tagalog: alitaptap, Japanese: hotaru, Irish: lamprog, Turkish: austus bejoyah, Greek: lampyro (I think)

Don't worry about the Croatian. I think they pronounce their c's softly like a ts. It could sound nice from the right person, I imagine. :D

  • fireflies fascinate me...prob because i live in southern california...never seen anything like them

  • Beautiful! I never see fireflies where I live on the west coast. They are fascinating. :)

  • Hey, maybe you and klingon woman should get together. lol.

  • Lol! At first I was thinking, "huh?" to your comment... but wow, you're right, our comments were surprisingly similar! I didn't even read her post at the time I posted mine. That's funny. :-D I'm farther up north on the coast though (Oregon).

  • When I was a kid their used to be fireflies everywhere, but they have sprayed so much for mosquitoes that it killed the fireflies .I'm lucky to see 1 or 2 at night anymore , most nights none.

  • I DID cry. I don't do that often. World leaders are talking about nuclear warfare. That is pornography. This is JOY!

  • This is so beautiful it almost made me cry lol. I have never seen this in real life. At first I didn't believe this was real footage. :)

  • This is my favorite time of year. I just posted a vid of firelfies in my backyard in NJ. Not as good as yours.

  • Hey nice vid but I was wondering if you could tell me exactly what part of the Hudson (which street) this is on; I have never seen that many of them going off at the same time and I would be great to go see that in person.

  • That's approximately 104th Street. A few yards into the "Cherry Walk" area on the water.

  • Great production, I give it a 10.

  • Just beautiful! These lovely creatures are just TOO fascinating! Wish they would survive in California....

  • why dont they survive in Cali?...oh and what part of cali are you from?

  • WOW!!! I've never seem them in real life. T__T

  • I didnt see Fireflies for 15 years, thanks for posting it. My Sister house Iligan City, Phil. Fireflies Amazingly appearing i her beautiful Garden and Trees. If you had a FIREFLIES in your place be CAUTION in Spraying Using Insecticide = DON =

  • Wow! We don't have fireflies in Australia. That is beautiful.

  • By the way, I think this is a beautiful video. Thanks for posting it.

  • i wish more people would catch this for us, we don't have them in AZ. Also has anyone seen the phenomenon when they blink in sync? I was hoping to find a post with it.

  • I was just searching for the blinking in sync phenomenon when I found this video. I hear that it happens in Thailand (or at least used to be). Would love to find some footage of that!

  • Best firefly video i have seen so far! great job

  • Nice. First time I ever saw fireflies was on the Upper West Side!

  • woah! were did that bike come from!?!?

  • I love this and I love the music. It's Romeo and Juliet, right?

  • It's actually music from The Nutcracker :)

  • The Pas de Deux from the Nutcracker. It seems to match the fireflies' majestic but bittersweet lot. Their bodies, or their thoraxes, are very tender and soft, so if you catch one, be careful and let it fly off your arm. It will probably blink goodbye!

  • You captured the mood beautifully and I think the music is perfect for this little scene.

  • Beautiful scenes the fireflies had done! Looks like twinkling stars! O.O

  • I didn´t put the sound on, but it looks like magical!!

  • this is rather magical ~ not sure about the music though ~
