I've seen most of you videos here on youtube but apparently I've missed this one. I really like this technique as well and will get to the table and try it out right away. Thanks a lot!
I'm glad you like this "gem." It is quite useful to know. FYI, there are many more resources (videos, articles, FAQ pages, etc.) available on my website. The link is in the video description.
Great Technique. I think if u weren't a professor, u would have been a great pool player. I have done a little practicing and noticed something, just assure me if this is true, In match play, it is generally easier to miss the center point long (through manipulation or lack of it) than it is to miss the point short with a wide range of cut angles. Thank you.
It is easy to miss the center both long and short based on the angle, position, and speed coming into the short rail. Although, for shots closer to a corner pocket (which you hope to have), the tendency will be to come up long, especially with more speed.
Amazing! Been playing off and on for 20 years. I've read Byrne's (Standard & Advanced), most of Capelle's books, Ray Martin's 99 Critical Shots, Koehler's Science of Pocket Billiards and a neat little book by Desmond Allen about kicking/banking systems. I also own a few of Grady's instructional videos. But I've NEVER seen this. Wish I knew this as a teenager when I had more time to play. Thanks for sharing.
i don't want to feel stupid but you say RUNNING english. can you please explain a little better about what running english is and reverse. I think running on that shot would be hitting on the right side of the cue. correct?
Running English is sidespin that tends to speed up the CB and widen the angle off the rail. In this shot, right English is running English off the first rail. But when the CB hits the 2nd rail with the same spin, the English is referred to as "reverse" (the opposite of "running"), where the CB tends to slow down with a shorter angle off the rail. I hope that helps. FYI, my website (especially the FAQ section) contains lots of good resources for learning everything about pool. Check it out.
dave im really getting into your videos. this explains so much. I will improve my game by a mile watching your videos. It helps me understand the cue ball position. Once again THANKS SO MUCH! Hopefully i will be able to clear up the table instead of running short or too far on a shot now :)
Tom is amazing with going through the center of the table. We didn't need very many "takes" with these clips ... he nailed most of the them the first try. But he's practices a lot more than most of us. I'm certainly nowhere near as good as Tom with this sort of position ... but I plan to practice more.

WOW! This is an extremely simple and useful rule of thumb. Very nice!

Thanks. This is probably my 2nd favorite principle. My favorite is the 30-degree rule for predicting CB direction for a rolling shot.
