  • 45.000 Words<3

  • I can't skip in case I change my mind as I write.

  • @ThePoppyFlight then you can change the scene to fit or edit in december

  • a few days ago I got stuck, skipped a day and when I finally got back to it only wrote 1000 words for two days. Now I'm 6000 words behind and for the first time this month I have... Home Work. NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Wish me luck. :/

  • Comment removed

  • The evil mage is so sendign ninjas to try to kill my main character (A half-trained mercenary :x) Might skip the hissy bitchfight currently going on and go right to te ninjas :D

  • @Entilodont Haha! Awesome. :)

  • I'm like 10,000+ words behind :( wahhhhh I just can't seem to stay focused.. instead I watch youtube.

  • @BelleEdlynn I am right there with you, my friend. Except I'm about 20,000 words behind. Don't beat yourself up though. That just keeps you stuck.

Give yourself permission to take a break with a specific time, say ten more minutes of video watching, then write for half an hour with the promise of another break at that point. It works for me sometimes, just to keep the momentum going. Any words are good.

  • @blythe025 Yeah, thanks. I find I write more when I'm in the car (not driving though, lol) or at school - where there's nothing to distract me... The tip about not deleting something is gonna help though. I keep self-editing while writing though I know I shouldn't....

  • 2:26 I know right my god thank you for the tips

  • @hinata4312 You are most welcome. :)

  • @hinata4312 You're welcome. Good luck wit your Nanoing. :)

  • I just restarted...that's -3261 :P

  • @SynesthesiaSoup lol. Well, it's Nano, so technically you could keep those words and claim they are a part of a book the character is reading or something.

  • @blythe025 Hey, you're right! I think you just saved me from a few sleepless nights of writing :D

    Thanks, you're awesome :)

  • already over 3000 words!

  • @TheBillieJean1234 Great job! :D

  • HAAAAAAAAPPPPPPYYYYY NANOWRIMO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheChillyCucumber Happy, happy nano to you, too! And happy writing! :D

  • ahmygod. 3 hours and 30 mins to do! :D

  • @TheIndiverselikeyeah *gasp* So close!

  • yay, I'm doing NaNoWriMo this year!

  • @AlbinoLights Yay! I'm planning on wading in with you. :)

  • "This happens, shit happens, their lives are ruined, they give up their families, they give up their friends, they write through Thanksgiving... It's a lot of fun."

  • I participated NaNoWriMo last year in 2010 and I finished with a word count of 100,407 words!! I love NaNoWriMo!!

  • I just signed up for NaNoWriMo back in February and kind of came in at the last minute last year and did it, but this year I am fully prepared for it. And, lucky for me and others out there, Camp NaNoWriMo should be launching soon. Are you going to do it this year? Thanks for the tips and tricks. I look forward to using them, especially the plot ninjas!

  • Do you type your novel or literally write it?

  • @LadyGaGaFan691 Mostly I type my novel out on the computer, though I have been known to hand write passages and scenes and then transcribe them into the computer.

  • I'm doing NaNoWriMo this coming November! HECK YAH!

  • @TheChillyCucumber Yay! Welcome to the land of the insane! :D

  • I attempted....and failed, I only got to about 1,000 words, school should be cancelled during th month of November. But I'm still writing it :)

  • @IamABabyGirl0217 You know what? I am of the very firm opinion that if you are still writing, then you have not failed. Sure you didn't complete Nano, however, the point is simply to get words on the page. If you are doing that, then you are all that is fabulous!

  • what qualifies as a novel?

  • @Stargirl2772 Well, that depends. 50,000 words is a lot, but its more like a novella length. I think novels range more long the lines of 80,000 to 100,000 or more words. It depends on the genre and the story that you're telling.

  • @blythe025

    hmmmm okay.........

  • 193,000 words! Yay :D

  • @delorfinde Wow! That is awesome! Great job! :D

  • I FINISHED YES!

  • @ScipioXaos YAY!!! Congratulations!

  • Im participating to and I already finished!

  • @emilyg92610 Congrats!!!!! :D

  • Being competive helps a lot.

  • didn't want the video to end T.T is there anything I can do to disable the delete key? lol i tend to press it WAY too many times

  • this is my first year and i'm already almost 8,000 words behind. i think i'm doing pretty well so far!

  • I'm taking part this year, it'll be my second year. Last year, I failed to get close to the 50,000, this year, I'm hoping to at least hit the half-way mark.

  • I'm participating this year :D I'm in college and the only time I see people is class lol But I do have a very good friend who makes sure I get like one proper meal a day XP. I'm up to 4,000 words in two days so I think i'm doing pretty good.

  • add me sammieseagull on nano if u know how to get book cover art done

  • this really helps, I always get bored halfway through.... But not this year! I have the best plot line in the world!

  • @1hotsummernight That's awesome! Good luck with the challenge.

  • I am pumped up!!!

  • @flowerbee1234 Woohoo!

  • Omigod - thank you. I have actually never heard of this before, but now I'm excited...although I'm already feverishly working on another project and in the process of moving so I'll have to pretend January is November. Which will be easy since I was planning on writing after my move anyway.

  • @billwenham I'm glad. I believe the site is open all year now with various challenges throughout the year. So you ight be able to tap into it in January, too.

And let me know when you decide to go for it in January. Maybe we can do some word wars and compete with each other to keep both of us motivated. I need to get some more writing done, too, and I can't participate in Nano this year.

  • thanks so much for the tips! first day and instead of writing i'm watching your video :/

    but now i'm inspired :)

  • @roteNatascha lol! Well, I'm glad you're feeling inspipred. Good luck with your writing efforts.

  • This is my first year and I'm so excited!! :D

  • @HandbellOlive That's great! Good luck!

  • This was a really informative video, thanks! It's my first year, I'm so excited and nervous :D

  • @tsunamizombie I'm glad you find it helpful. Have fun with it. Nano is not just about getting words on the page, but also about having fun. As long as you do that, you'll be fine. :)

  • I'm doing it this year! I'm soooo freaking excited/nervous/scared/jumping off the walls. It'll be my first year, and I'm hoping I make it.

    Thank you for the tips!

  • @x0artliveart0x You're welcome! I'm excited for you. It's a lot of fun. Good luck. :D

  • what if you write 50,00 words but can't finish up with your novel?

  • @LifeIsWorthFighting If you want to finish it,, then you write it. Writing doesn't end with Nano. Set some daily and/or weekly goals and keep making progress. Eventually you'll finish it. :)

  • more tips!

  • @MavicityHerself I'll have to think about that. I'm not participating this year. But I'll see what I can come up with.

  • I am SO there this year and will write my first 50,000 word young adult/kids tale, after dreaming for over fifty years....

  • @WimGrundy Awesome!

  • In my story, I have already decided that I am going to include the line "and then 50,00 ninjas dropped from the ceiling for no apparant reason".

  • @tabbykatification Haha! That's awesome. :D

  • As another way of looking at the idea of plot bunnies, think about what Raymond Chandler used to advise: If you don't know what to write next, introduce a man with a gun. You may never even figure out who he is or why he was there, but it gives your characters something to react to.

I'm going to be attempting again this year (I've tried twice before and failed), though I'm still trying to figure out just what I'll be writing. :P

  • @DrawnSteelHero "Introduce a man with a gun." I love that. It's so simple and perfect.

Good luck with your attempt this year! I've only completed the challenge about every other year that I've tried, so I know how that goes. And I'm sure that you'll come up with a great idea soon enough. :)

  • I think the most important thing about this is to remember that you have to write about QUANITY, not QUALITY.

It doesn't matter what you write but how much you write, and that's the beauty of this insane challenge. The harddest thing is to let yourself write without worrying about the quality, and this challenge FORCES you to forget about the quality.

My favorite tip was to skip to the exciting scenes - a lot of times I stop writing a story because I get BORED with where I am!!!

  • @ScathachWarrior Totally true. It's all about getting words down on the page. You can worry about getting them good in the editing process. :)

I may not be participating this year. I'm working a lot and don't have my own computer. It makes things complicated. But I will be working on a novel this year, just probably won't make it to 50,000 with the time I've got available.

  • Participating this year. I'm ScathachWarrior on the website :D

Totally excited about it - THE PLOT BUNNY VISITED ME!!!

    ~Savannah

  • It is a HUGE challenge, but it is also great fun, especially if you can find a way to connect with other writers in your area. :)

  • My best friend told me I should do this! It looks really fun... It looks like something I should do; I'm going somewhere for Thanksgiving break, so guess who's doubling the word count minimum per day!

  • This is going to be my first year participating, having thought about it and been exited by the project for a few years! These are some great tips, thank you very much!

  • @FilmmakerMichael You're welcome! and good luck!

  • I'm participating this year, but I'm a little scared. School and a 50,000 word novel Hard work.

  • @fraaixfure Agreed (sophomore in High school), It'll be my first try this year. But a healthy over ambition never hurt anyone did it? best of luck by the way! :)

  • She sounds like she's about to cry?

  • @TaylahiscoolXD

    i thought so too

    ... it made me sad.

  • This is my first year participating in NaNoWriMo. I'm definitely excited, and what motivates me even more is the thread on NaNoWriMo forums with the proof copy covers. OMG, they're so wonderful!

  • @CompulsiveOrigami Sweet! It's good fun. :)

Where's that forum with the covers? That sounds like it would inspiring. :)

  • @blythe025 nanowrimo[dot]org/eng/node/3475201

I think you know what to replace, haha.

  • @CompulsiveOrigami Thanks! :)

  • I'm starting this year :D

  • I'm contemplating participating in NaNoWriMo 2010. The only problem is that I'm going to spend three, four days at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in November. I don't want to write through that.

  • @fireboltflier So, then readjust your daily required word count to compensate for those three days when you know you will not be writing. Typically you would need to write 1667 words a day to complete it in 30 days. So you would need to write 1852 words a day to be able to skip writing on those three days. Do that and you'll be fine. :)

  • @blythe025 okay. thanks. I can definitely do that, I hope :)

  • im already prepping for 2010! are you joining this year?

  • @adhdboy699 I'm planning on it. Though I really need to get it together and get the full draft of last year's Nano novel written before I launch into a new book. So.... we'll see.

  • Do u think age 12 is 2 young 2 do it? I lov 2 write and it sounds so fun!

  • @kandykrazi564 There are no age limits, my dear. If you feel moved to participate, to challenge yourself, then I say go for it! :)

  • I never heard of NaNoWriMo until this past Nov 28, yet I've had like four of five novels in my head torturing me for roughly the past six years-----none of which are written yet. Need to get them down before I go mad... Or maybe NaNoWriMo IS madness? ^.^

Thank you for sharing your advice!

  • You're welcome. Did you participate this year? If not, then FYI, the Nano site is supposed to be up and running year round from now on, so that would be a good source of inspiration & advice.

Also, don't hold off on your ideas. Just get to them, otherwise they pile up and start to beat you with dream sticks in the middle of the night. It's not fun. I should know.

  • i got my word count but didn't finish the story line......

  • I didn't finish the storyline on mine either and unfortunately, I think it's going to take me triple or quadruple the amount of words to even figure out where I want to end up with this thing. So I'll be working on this one for a while yet.

  • 49,094... So close I can taste it! XD

  • Oh my! You are indeed close. And probably already done by the time you read this. :)

  • Thanks and congrats to the other winners!

  • I was just declared A WINNER!! :]

  • WINNER! Yay! for winners! Rah! Rah!

  • 40,000k!!!! 10k to go in 5 days!!!

    YAY!!!

  • Yay! You can do it!

  • Hey great vid! Our facial expressions and mannerisms are so similar that it made me slightly uncomfortable. Haha, it's okay though. I'm at 27,000 words and I only have 5 days left. Gotta go! :)

  • lol. That's so weird.

Congrats on your word count. I'm just about at the same stage you are. Heh.

  • im thirteen, this is my 1st year, i just got to 15,000, and i have absolutely no plan. im just writing as i go, but it makes it all the more creative!

  • Congrats! That is an awesome count of words. :)

And sometimes having no plan is the key to setting your mind free. :)

  • thanks =] and out of sheer boredom i just decided to have one of my characters fall off her horse and get amnesia. its pretty entertaning!

  • Sounds like it! :)

  • I just hit the half-way mark last night. Gonna be a rough last half trying to catch up but I'm having a blast and hopefully I'll make it!

  • It seems to get much harder at the end. Get ready for the huge panic if you realize your plot is just about over and you are still ten or fifteen thousand words short.

  • You'll make it through. Just keep going little bits at a time if you have to. :)

  • WAy. Way. BEHIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey! Me, too! Totally buds.

  • I broke 30,000 earlier today - am on 30,791 now, and I need to reach about 31400 before I'm allowed to sleep. Wish me luck!

  • Awesome! And good luck! Though you don't seem to need it. ;)

  • just broke 27000; really happy because I'm only 14

  • Sweet! Well done and congrats! *continues to cheer*

  • no i'm so behind

  • Me, too. Way behind, but we gotta just keep plugging away. Any words are better than no words. :)

  • I actually applied all of your rules today- plot ninjas is my current favorite!

  • i didn't know about it until today, and the month is already half gone! i guess i'll have to wait till next year to do it. darn it.

  • Well, as you say, there's always next year. Of course, if you're a particularly brave soul, you could try to go for it anyway. :)

  • I'm behind. WAY behind.

  • Yeah. Me, too. Way behind, but we gotta just keep plugging away. :)

  • Whats Write or die? I can't get motivated ..i'm only on like 3 thousand words! I'm so ASHAMED!!

  • Check your youtube messages. I posted the WoD link there.

  • Right now I'm at 18,964 words. I just started using WoD last night, though.

  • Excellent word count! Keep it up. :)

  • I was doing alright the first week, but for the last few days I've been on an "apathetic hiatus", lol. My word count remains at just over 7k. I need to get like 11k more words to break even for today, lol.

  • I know the feeling. I spent all last night watching old Buffy episodes instead of writing and I've fallen quite behind myself. It happens. Just keep comming back to it. Start with writing a minimum of 100 words. Anyone can write 100 words. And if you can get to writing more than that then great. :)

  • This was really helpful! thank you so much. I was wondering where you could find the dares and prompts on the website though so if you know where those please tell me, thanks!

  • I'm currently only at 14 000 as I was away for four days straight.

Personally, I find the second chapter of most novels to be the hardest to write. You're past the introduction but you're only building stuff up for the chapters to come so it's not exactly fun to write.

  • That is an awesome word count. Well done.

I get what your saying about second chapters too. They can indeed be difficult. But my trouble comes in Act 3 and 4 (assuming 5 acts) where everything has to figured out and settled. I can never make up my mind how I want it all to go.

  • Same here. I'm about to start the turning point in the story. You know, where the plot really starts to focus in. I had it all planned out, now I don't like the idea anymore at all for I have to figure out what to do :S

  • This is my first year doing NaNo and I started four days late and as of right now I have 16, 242 words. And all my homework is getting done too.

  • Excellent words count! Well done on the simultaneous completion of homework too! *cheers*

  • Don't forget the Write or Die method.

It's my first year, and I've churned out a few thousand of my words with WoD. XD

...I'm still lagging behind, but less now that I have WoD. My goal for the weekend is to catch up. 8D

  • WoD is awesome. I haven't been using it in a while, but I may play with it again. :)

And you'll do it! I have faith!

  • I've been fairly successful with my course of action for nano. Every time I start hating a character, I introduce a new one to murder him/her and then continue on with a chapter about that character and it's all centered around one object and a setting, so it isn't too random, yet still fun. Day 6 and I have 9931 words.

  • lol! That sounds like a good plan for marching through. Great job!

  • I got to about 7000 words in the first four days... then slashed the entire plot. I'm not going to get a lot of homework done this month.

  • Sweet! Well done! A

t least well done on the writing bit, don't know that I can say well done on the no homework bit. ;)

  • Hi,I'm from Ireland,I was wondering, you said this was a competition for authors worldwide, but it's called the NATIONAL Novel Writing Month, are people outside the USA allowed to try?

  • Yep. It started in the US, hence the National, but participants hail from at least 6 of 7 continents. :)

  • im not doing as well as i thought i would do, its alot harder than it sounds lol.

but it is fun, and it's only my first year.

  • depending on where you live, there may be events organized so that writers can get together and support each other. Check out the nanowrimo forums to see if there are any in your area!

I can definitely back this up--I live in Toronto, Canada, and if I hadn't met the Toronto Nano gang I never would have made it!!

  • Hey, any words are better than no words, right? If you're writing ANYTHING you're doing fabulous.

  • I just found out about this the other day, so I think I'm a little late now...but maybe next year I'll attempt Nanowrimo! 50,000 words in a month, though...that's definitely a challenge.

  • It is only week one, so it is still totally viable to jump in at this point. It is a challenge, but it is also sooooo fun. :)

  • I've written over 4,000 words. I'm supposed to be up higher by now. I've got to go write soon....... (instead of doing my homework. I figure it's my better option)

  • Congrats! Any words are better than no words. Those are 4000 words that you might not have written otherwise. So be proud!

  • i couldn't find the dares page or prompt page

  • I tried to post this yesterday but it didn't go through. There is no specific page for dares and prompts. You just have to look through the forums on the Nano site to find them. Some will be under the genre topics and some will be under the regional topics. You can also post a topic asking for dare and prompt ideas.

Though, I right now dare you to write a scene that includes a snake in it. Use it anyway you like.

  • Dares can be found in the Plot Doctoring section of the forums.

  • Thanks for posting this! Also, I added you as a writing buddy on the NaNo website.

  • You're welcome! I'm glad you like it. And I'm honored.

  • I am at 7600 words and its going great! Its my first NaNoWriMo and loving it!

  • Congrats!

  • It's the third day and I'm running out of motivation! HELP!! :O

  • Keep going. Sit down and tell yourself that you are going to write 100 words. That's it. Just 100 words. Maybe you'll write more, but all you have to do is get those 100 words down. You can do that. I know you can.

Then take a break if you want.

Then come back and write 100 more.

That kind of thing saved me in past nanos. Sometimes you can get through the whole pie by taking itty bitty bites.

  • Thanks :) That is good advice ^_^ I'll tell you how it goes later on? :D

  • Only day number two and I'm still going! I think I might actually be able to do this!

  • Congrats! *cheers* Rah-rah-shish-cum-bah! You can do it!

  • Well i wasn't participating the year you posted it, but i am this year. Its insanity because i had to miss the first day and I'm almost 3000 words behind!!

  • Go to write-ins, participate in word wars. You'll catch up. :)

  • you make it sound like torture...

  • Do I? That was not my intention. It is quite fun, and I have always enjoyed it immensely, though it is also very, very challenging. :)

  • My friends got me into this,

and it's my first year doing nanowrimo, and my first time writing a novel in general,

    so I'm a bit terrified.

Especially being a senior at a prep school.

Anyway, good luck to everyone else!!

  • I'm sure you'll do fine. There is no failing at this, because any words you write are words you might not have written otherwise. :)

  • My friend and I (also most of our writer's club at school) are doing NaNo this year, along with a vlog to document our experience.

  • Yay. Is AudaciousSpectacle the channel with your vlog? I'll check it out.

  • Yes, and please do!

  • Great video, five stars! I'm so psyched for my first year of NaNoWriMo.

If anyone wants some friendly competition to keep those keys hot, buddy me: miisspelled.

  • Thank you. My username is the same, blythe025, so I would be happy to connect and compete. :)
