They are both great artists... I've seen both of them in concert, and have been taught in clinics by both of them as well. They have very different aproaches to teaching how to sing and perform, but I learned great great things from both equally. As far as which one is better, it depends on what you are listening for. :)
I just heard fo him today!! A friend compared me with a voice she heard on the radio.....I've got a lot to listen to!! I'm very impressed...motivated..and stimulated!!
A wonderful singer does that to other musicians and singers..........
saw him in Istanbul in october 2007. We were mesmerised, 2 hours of intense, wonderful music. He can do whatever he wants with his voice. definetely one of the best vocalist in the world
i saw him last weekend with adelaide symphony orchestra, kurts really a performer its great not just musically but to watch.. it was a really fat sound with the symphony orchestra and his quartet if u get the chance defnitely see him
well i love his voice coz it has the edginess of a mute trumpet..i wonder if it's been described this way.. didn't know who he was till that performance with Lee Rit in Singapore last weekend.
Kurt elling..., i just saw him at mosaic music festival jazz in singapore, he colaborate with lee ritenour, it was so great performance, superb!!!!....
Kurt Elling is one of the greatest voices known to man. He has the ability to take his listening audience on a journey. I compare him to Ella F., Jazmine Sullivan and Rachell Farell. I thank God that I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform live.
I just saw Kurt Elling at Lincoln Center in NYC ... I was so lucky ... what an artist .. he uses the whole range of his 'instrument' and it is vast ... he plays, tells stories, and has access to a wide range of nuanced emotion. He knows his talents and is exploring them to the everwidening edges. His audience enjoys his music with him.
Some people have good voices but don't know how to sing. Some know how to sing, but they don't have good voices. Well, for me this guy is the latter. He can sing, but I just don't like the sound of his voice. Frank Sinatra had a great voice and could sing, too. He may not have been considered a jazz singer nor, did he pretend to be one, but people could listen to Sinatra forever because he sounded so good in his prime. Sinatra's recordings are still selling well after his death.
Kurt Elling is a very expressive jazz singer with a very good voice who CAN sing very well. He is a unique talent so please dont do the pigeon hole thing. Maybe you should let your Sinatra inhibitions go and listen a tad harder. This guy is not a Sinatra impersonator he is himself. Think Jon Hendricks or do you know who he is?
Stop fuckin comparing him to Frank Sinatra. Sinatra is fake jazz. Takes a lot more talent and skill to do the mind blowing scat and control of people like Kurt.
Kurt Elling is not only a fantastic vocalist, he is a true musician. The vocalise he does to transcribed solos can be mind blowing in their accuracy and poetic content.
He continues to suprise me of what a singer can do, definantly one of the best around.
I saw him as he was touring for this cd, fantastic thing (and quite sad at the same time) was that tickets for students were only 5$.
Kurt has learned well from Mark Murphy (the original hipster). Check out Mark Murphy and you'll see where Kurt comes from. Excellent vocalists, both...
I really don't think that he sounds like Sinatra at all. He has his voice and his own sound. I have seen him live and he approaches the music completely differently than Sinatra did. Great jazz vocalist though - probably the best today.
his tone changes my whole day!!!!!! there's nothin' like some Mr. Elling at the end of the day to get the night started---love em' love em' love em'!!!!! i listen to it, i breath it, i sing it, i live it!!!!LOVE EM'!
king of jazz must say....
he's incredible. the way he scats at the beginning-- most of his singing seems so effortless yet just comes out so amazingly! wow!
