who the hell is Daniel Hannan? has any british person ever heard of him before all this? he clearly just saying this to make a name for himself back here... ive grown up on NHS and never had bad care etc.. oh and for the record my teeth are intact and white ;)
We already tried it in two states, one that failed and the other that is almost out of money. If we can't get it to work in a single state, why would we ever try it out on the entire country?
Has this commentator ever utilized the NHS? Oh, he hasn't? I have, it's fine. I even wonder whether the git he's interviewing has ever used the NHS. A professor of mine was diagnosed with cancer and, being treated under the NHS, outlived initial prognoses of less than a year to live by almost seven years!!
I'm now living in Germany, but I can still afford to receive health care even though insurance here is mandatory. You see, there's a "public option" here!!

'They already have so-called universal healthcare and the results? well they're not pretty'...
That is the most ridiculous, unprofessional, biased, and prematurely loaded intro ever by Mr Hannity. There is actually no point in Mr Hannity interviewing any guests because he's so ignorant that he makes his conclusion before talking to anyone!

Klime, you live in a country that is ok with the government being a provider, we on the other hand believe in personal responsibility and the free market.
The 80% number was on an terribly inaccurate poll. just like the one CNN did after BO's primetime show to the joint session of congress, where they chose to poll three times as many Dems than Republicans.
"Power of life and death, into a state beaurocracy", seriously the word "power" as if peoples health is held against them in the U.K, where that is the actual case in the profiteering health companies of america. in the UK u get sick you get as much help as modern medicine can provide and its cheaper (paid from tax) because there are no pharmacutical companies looking for capital gains.
As far as the short bus comment, I was replying to a few of your comments, for example, your not bright opening a business when you can't even afford insurance for your family. Healthcare is an individuals responsibility, not the responsibility of the federal government or me.
sincerely,
business owner who provides insurance to over 200 families
There is a place for government, and the level government should be pushed to the most local level possible. For example, there is no room for federal oversight of education. All the Dept of Ed does is waste money in washington.
One of the problems with this administration is that it feels the federal government is better equipped to help the citizenry than the citizenry.
The government has every right: Imagine if the Police force were not run by the government but instead by businesses; you would get no assistance if your house was robbed unless you were insured. Businesses would find ways around paying for protection as they avoid paying for health insurance.
Infact it is well known that the Fire Departments in america and specifically New York were privitised and as a result fire departments fought against one another rather than fighting the fire.
It is the job of government, specifically local government, to provide police and power protection. As far as your silly argument that businesses have gotten out of providing a health insurance, a vast majority of the country is covered.
Now to the point at hand, the US is a country of limited federal govenment, and those powers are spelled out in the Constitution. There is no provision in the Constitution allowing for this interference.
It is a fact that before the Fire Departments were nationilised by the public sector that the private business used to fight, bribe and con the public and each other: The same happens in my opinion with private health care; what happens when someone who has worked all their life cannot afford to pay for treatment when they are ill? I like the idea of knowing if I am diagnosed with a serious illness, unemployed, too ill to work or even just want free impartial advice that the service is there.
You provide no evidence that happens in healthcare.
If you are unemployed and broke, then you have Medicaid to fall back on. In Texas we have a terrific system for caring for those patients. If you fell in that situation and found out you had cancer, you'd be able to access the MD Anderson Cancer Center which is the best in the world.
There are very few situation in this country where somebody needs help, but can't access it.
Yeah, it's not like the Constitution empowers our elected officials to "promote the general welfare" or anything! . . . oops. Well, I suppose if we just get rid of the Constitution, then we'll not only not have to worry about health care, but the NIH, the CDC, the FDA and everything else can be thrown out too, thereby undermining our general welfare! I think we can all agree that we must vigilantly fight anything that would make us all better off and healthier, especially if it would save money.
If federal government programs tend toward inefficiency and free-market solutions tend toward effeciency, then promoting the general welfare should mean promoting the proven superior model for all services except those outlined in the Constitution.
It would be odd if a late-eighteenth-century document used the term "welfare state", which didn't exist at the time. "Promote" is broader than "provide", but "provision" would fall under "promotion", as would many other things--none of which I'm suggesting be excluded (though it seems as you would like to exclude such provision, even though it already exists in the form of the agencies and services I've already mentioned).
This is absolute rubbish, I have been looked after by the NHS for my entire life, born in an NHS hospital. Been taken to A&E in NHS hospitals. Had repeated treatment with NHS doctors. Only had 2 family doctors and that was only because one died. I have never been refused treatment, never had a long waiting list and in emergencies you jump the list anyway
I have a feeling that this is funded by the insurance companies in America
Your bank balance should not decide if you live or die!
most of the private insurance company is not dying because they have been bankrupt but it is bcause it is socially engineered for syndicate purposes, using the peoples money for non sense, wasting it and when the maturity came the company suddenly close. . . and they blaming the mighty administration that they have been bankrupt . . . open up people this is the real world.
What a loser this Fox news presenter this man is. I've watched him here from UK and he talks like he's totally possessed with conservative demon. American news should leave politics and focus on what really matters.
Anyway private healthcare isn't going to get you anywhere. It is just a means of money but leaving a lot of people dead. Nationalise something and make it for everyone not for the rich and wealthy, like the selfish news presenter.
This election cycle proved that journalism is dead. As long as CNNMSNBCABCCBSNBC are considered to be "unbiased" and there are no journalist there to call bullshit, it will remain dead. They have not once really dug into this healthcare bull to point out all of its deficiencies, because they are Obama's cheerleaders.
Fox has the decency of making their conservative tendencies known, but still puts on the opposing viewpoint.
It is about providing facts that prove a point, which you don't.
As far as your insurance situation, 1. what do you do for a living? 2. How much do you make? 3. Do you qualify for medicaid? 4. Is there an option for insurance through your employer, if so, how much is it?
If your employer doesn't provide insurance, get another job. If you don't have a job, get one you lazy ass. If enough people leave the employer will realize they need too in order to compete.
Wow, your post is insightful. I was pointing out a weakness in government owned healthcare system and tried to make it humorous.
And to your point about people with terminal and preventable diseases, nearly everybody in the country is covered by some form of insurance. Except for illegals and those that decide insurance isn't worth paying for, everybody else is covered.
Absolute gibberish! You are free to choose private or public healthcare. Nobody is going to kill off your private insurance. It is partly because of the mass media that so many Americans buy into this neo-conservative crap. They are politically biased and spew irresponsible comments, and disguise them as fact, when, with a little looking up, they are easily exposed as lies. LIES, LIES, LIES!
Actually, Private insurance dies because it makes companies favor the socialistic plan over the free market. Also, it restricts companies from writing new plans, except for congress, of course.
Where in the constitution does it give any sort of power over the healthcare system to the executive branch of government?
Hence the need to reform. The idea of providing better coverage than most insurance companies is very appealing, and at least there will be no issue about not being covered because it was, say, the wrong hospital you went to! I think the insurance companies have done pretty well for themselves. In competition with the government, they'll profit margins may drop, but they will survive, and may be perform even better, more competitively. It's A-level Economics.
Then what is the government's job? And when I say A-level Economics, I was referring to the GCE A-Level course syllabus in the UK--I mean it is rudimentary. The A-levels are the exams we take in England before we enter tertiary education, i.e. university.
I know what A-level means. And your understanding of Free Market Economics is laughable. Competition improves the system not the government.
As far as what is the government's job, it is spelled out in our constitution. You see, America was founded on the principle of limited government. We don't believe in the Nanny-State where the government provides all of life's essentials, rather opting for self-reliance.
This man is clearly insane. Britain is a couple of years behind Zimbabwe??? Is he fucking crazy?? Do people in the states actually listen to this and believe it. I'm sure Fox News is paying him to say this.
Stupid bloody conservative. All he wants is to let the rich stay rich and the poor to die off. The current American healthcare system is bias towards the rich and powerful, the drug companies and other heathcare establishments make BILLIONS off of the sick and helpless. People have no choice, it's pay up or die. Their stupid insurance companies look for ANY excuse not to cover the patients healthcare so that THOUSANDS of people have to dole out THOUSANDS of dollars to pay for their own treatment
Monkey, there are a great many laws on the books in america that prevents hospitals from turning away uninsured patients. the laws are drastic enough to take away a facility's license if they violate it.
There is a lot of BS from both liberals and conservatives on this one.
Nevertheless, I find the idea of having to pay for healthcare to be a disgusting one. Perhaps it's just because I've grown up with it, but for me (and I'm guessing most europeans) healthcare should be no different from any other emergency service. Imagine having to quote an insurance number to the police if somone was breaking into your house. It would be nonsensical, so why do americans except it in their hospitals? It seems like they've all been brainwashed into fearing 'evil' socialism.
I don't think any "liberals" are saying hospitals are turning people away emergencies, but people are not getting the preventative care they need which results in massively inflated costs as well as private insurers refusing to insure the people who need it most, dumping those costs onto the taxpayer as well.
When it comes to healthcare, privatization is crazy, just like privatization of the military or police would be crazy.
I don't mean it's going to be, I mean it already is. The rationing argument is crazy because even in the countries with single payer there's no more rationing then there is today with the privatized system.
The fact is you're _more likely_ to get denied care by private insurers. That's the real rationing.
Actually, I know two senior citizens that are canadians. Their doctor said that they need knee replacements. The system didn't approve them, so both came to America, one to NJ one too TX. Our doctors agreed that the replacements were needed, so they had the procedure but paid cash.
There is very little true "denial" by insurance companies when a procedure is truly needed.
Anecdotal evidence is great because you can use it to prove any point at all. I once heard of a woman who couldn't walk and was cured when a priest laid hands on her. So should we move to a faith-healing based approach to healthcare reform?
Oh for the love of God don't believe anything this man says. Daniel Hannan has been lambasted by the British media for fuelling all the rubbish Republicans are spouting about the N.H.S which is completely untrue. The system works brilliantly and 99.9% of British people will agree with me
Oh my lord... what a laughable idea, him becoming head of anything. There is no way anyone sane will vote for him, I'd be surprised if he manages to retain the seat he currently has with such ludicrous comments.
Lets see if hannan gets re-elected after all this bullshit he's been feeding the americans.. I doubt this man has ever had anything other than private care in his entire life - his own people who voted for him are absolutly disgusted with what he has said as they are bare-faced lies. They said if hawking lived in england we would have left him to die? He came out himself and said "i DO live in England and the NHS saved my life". Just a shame americans dont care enough about each other as we do.
I dont care what this twat says:- the NHS is one of the best and one of the few healthcare systems out there where NO MATTER how rich or poor you are, no matter what your race, age, sex, religion, creed you WILL be treated and treated equally -
yes i admit the NHS has faults but which healthcare system doesn't? - This twat can say NHS crap is because the fucker can afford private, the patients i see....CANT
From
1st Year Medic - Proud and Supporting The NHS Throughout My Future Career!!!
Again - this is irresponsible journalism, where Murdoch sucks up to his rich private medical friends. Hannan exaggerates the state of the NHS. I have always thought care provided by the NHS was top notch - Americans need to understand how Fox is trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Don't believe the hype! Dan Hannan is going back to hell where all the other lying toadies reside.
Don't believe his crap! I am British, I use the NHS. When I am ill I don't fear debt or bankruptcy. It costs me £7.10 for 1 prescription no matter what quantity of drug. It is free to see a doctor. Every American deserves health care not just the rich elite! Their insurance schemes are a rip off! We Brits get treated no matter what walk of life we come from. Regardless of what any of you think of Michael Moore he is telling the truth in his excellent movie SICKO! Watch it and learn!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sioux, As an american, mind your own business. NHS is going to bankrupt your country, we prefer it not happen here. The part of the story that is rarely told is, of the 40 million uninsured number, a great number is made up of illegals (who we shouldn't pay for) and young people who opt out of insurance to save money.
one of the keys to saving our system is booting the illegals out of the country.
Whitakerj, As a Briton you are not knowledgable enough to comment on our NHS. Our NHS began in 1948 to quote " was born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth". We in Great Britain unlike you have a choice of private health care and/or NHS. I am a native born Briton and have a full time job and still choose the NHS for it's top notch service. To be continued.
If I ever I need to go to hospital I know my house and belongings will still be there for me and not taken taken away by the baillif because I couldn't afford the medical bill. Healthcare should be for all. After 61 years our NHS is still going strong thank you very much!
Congrats sioux, you are a ward of the state. We Americans believe the free market is the handle these economic issues. For what it is worth, my uncle was an exec in London and had to take one of his kids to the hospital. Not knowing any better, he went to the government owned facility, in which he described the care as laughable. Also, as a hospital owner, I have never turned away an uninsured patient.
Whitakerj, You own a hospital. You say that you never turn away an uninsured patient, well that is good. What happens if that patient can't pay the fee?
95% of the time, I end up eating the expenses. Hospitals are more than willing to work out a payment plan, all people have to do is contact the business office.
Whitakerj, and what if the patient can't afford the payment plan, any payment period? Do you turn them away then? As for our country going bankrupt, it won't be the NHS that will cause that. It will be our piss poor government who must insist on wasting money bailing out the corporate fat cats i.e. banks etc instead of concentrating on vital public services. Speaking of illegals, aren't the only true Americans the "Red Indians". I bet they can't afford decent health care!
sioux, As I said before, I have never turned away an uninsured, if they don't pay, they just don't pay. I don't have somebody go break their kneecaps in order to collect.
The NHS is a big part of what will ruin a pretty good country. As for the bailing out of the banks, if they fail many more people lose there jobs and businesses.
As far as Native Americans being the only legal ones here, that hasn't been true for 200 years. And for the record, any true native Americans get free healthcare.
Well that is good then if you say you give free health care to those that don't pay. Is your hospital run like a business or a service then? How do you make enough to run the hospital ? Is it because you make enough from those that are insured? Surely every patient has to pay something. Please enlighten me on how your system works? And why do you think the NHS will ruin our country when we have used it for 61 years? As for the banks, jobs are still being lost even after receiving billions of £s
It is a business and run as such, however, there are many laws against turning away those that need care. And yes, I do make it up on those that are insured. Socialism has never worked well, and for that reason in will ruin the NHS. And by the way if our healthcare is so poor, why do your teeth look so bad?
More jobs would have been lost without the bailout.
our teeth look so bad because we have to get private insurance to pay for them. dental and glasses are private and not covered by the NHS. if it were we would all have lovely teeth. it has never been covered since 1948.
He has no right to speak about our screwed up healthcare sysem. He needs to be talking about the UK going broke in WW2. They conned the US into defending the empire and trying to take over the world's financial system. We are going broke trying dominate the world. Cut the department of Offense by 75% and give us universal single payer!
Hannan distorts fact to suckhole around his pals in US. LISTEN UP! Dan the man knows jack about this subject - he is a serial exaggerator and his fawning 'America I love you' is an embarrasment. Future Prime Minister? Even we're not that stupid - see we've had bitter past experience of smart asses who talk the talk but are so full of shit it's no wonder they can't walk the walk!
It'll be interesting if Hannan can keep his job come next election. Sorry to burst the bubble but the majority of Britain, including myself are damn proud of our NHS.
The clown they have here saying he "represents" British constituents actually took his post after an election which fell short of 50% turn out by 1 million.
The fact that Fox News has to go so deep into my countries political backwaters to find a supporter of their right wing views shows just how ridiculous they are.
Get a credible source on your side and maybe then you'll have some sort of argument. ATM you sound like a bunch of headless chickens anxious to keep your money in your pockets.
Dan Hannan is not an idiot and I agree with most of what he says.
However, this is an obvious mistake on his part. Healthcare is the exception to the rule.
Just because it's setup by the Government doesn't mean it's "Government run". Doctors and researchers decide how the money is best spent to save lives. At the moment American spending on health care is rising massively each year and loads of people have no care at all. It's unfair and it's an abomination.
So people still believe that there is such a thing like no costs? If something is giving to you for "free" that means that somebody else is paying, you cannot disregard that fact.
How the hell is the government socialist?! We socialists have been begging for at least one socialist idea from a Prime Minister since Atlee. If you want better treatment then vote Labour then, well, anyone but the Tories.
Once again Hannan is allowed to peddle his right wing/neo con views in a unfettered and uncontested way courtesy of Fox news. This third rate politician elected to the European parliament on only a 30% turnout should never be given this kind of platform to peddle his unrepresentative views of the NHS. There are plenty more like him in the Tory party unfortunately. British people love the NHS. Every citizen is entitled to the best healthcare. Good health is not the preserve of the rich!
bet Mr Hannity doesn't read the only British paper that makes sense: the Guardian. It is actually making me very angry. What right does this Tory idiot have to criticise what all people can use for free. HOW DARE HE! There are people in the USA dying because they cannot afford care. If he doesn't like the NHS there are still loads of bloody private hospitals he probably uses. I don't understand America. What argument can you have for not allowing everyone to live?
It's not that Americans don't want everyone to have healthcare, it's that Americans don't want to pay for this healthcare. The social programs we have now cost the American taxpayer enough and these systems get abused to hell and back. I don't want to pay more money for people who choose not to take care of themselves. And let's not act like people are dying in the streets because there are no options available. You can walk into any county hospital and bee seen regardless of insurance.
"I don't want to pay more money for people who choose not to take care of themselves."
I don't think it is always that persons choice not to have healthcare.
Over here it is cheaper and more effective: Free at the point of use for any U.K citizen. Not only that but if you don't like the NHS you can pay for private healthcare if you like.
how does one person's need morally obligate me as an individual to forfeit my time and income to alleviate it, to the point of force by the government?
That's part of being a member of a community. If you don't want to be part of our society, catch the next plane to an uninhabited island. You can bring all your money with you, and spend all your time by yourself. The rest of us will remain here and spend (some of) our resources helping and supporting each other by making our shared home a better place for all Americans.
So, they believe, that being given completely free health care, is wrong. In comparison to only getting health care ONLY if they have insurance. Ive had severe asthma since i was born, and hospitalized under the NHS several times in my life, and theyve been fucking amazing.
Im really struggling to see whats bad about this proposal. Ive also pissed myself laughing listening to this propaganda adverts against the NHS.
Does this guy realise that the NHS means that every single person gets acess to healthcare? And those who chose to spend more money on private healthcare can do so at their own expense? This man is an idiot!
He is the ONLY British politician (barely known in the UK) that holds these views. That's why you can't find any other UK politician rubbishing the NHS
The NHS, at 61 years old, is clearly sustainable & SAVES LIVES, it is twice as efficient than the US system as a % of GNP, yet FULLY covers everyone.
Yet our taxes are reasonable (Source HMRC):
Starting rate: 10% £0-£2,230
Basic rate: 22% £2,231-£34,600
Higher rate: 40% Over £34,600
He's an ideologue & lap dog, not a rational individual
i can assure you that Britains will not let anyone strip away the NHS we have only to look at the American system to know what that would mean. the reason why its still there is because we want it and ANY government who would even contemplate taking it away would be voted out of office.
Hannan talks shit. He is un-British. The NHS is a sacred institution which has 90% approval rating in the UK. It puts the US system to shame. Hannan should be extradited to the US on a leaky dingy.
This guy really doesn't know what he's saying, ask any British person what they think of the NHS and you'll get the complete opposite of what he said.
Look you lying bags of shit on fox, you've lied over and over again and you pick the most retarded member of the EP that will just mislead you. 99% of the people in Britain will say the NHS does a good job. Once again you fucking retards have picked the 1% that wilil just agree with you a flat out lie. Don't rely on some retard to tell you things, look at it yourself before you lie again and again you fucking piece of shit.
Interesting stat indeed, thecouchtripper. But even if life expectancy and infant mortality figures aren't "adjusted" by the Castro regime (a big assumption), the high abortion rate in Cuba must also be taken into account.
Infant mortality and life expectancy figures conveniently don't count children killed before birth because they have some likelihood of having a disability. It turns out that health figures look better if we kill people before they can cost us. Is that really progress?
I see freedom as a pillar for individuals to seek happiness. Human relationship, but only with significant others are an another pillar for happiness. But none of those needs governement to be involved. If you really want to do something for poor people help them to stand proud but not assisted like socialist country.
The wealthy work on a social strata which dictates that you cannot (and will not) gain the same influence unless you are able to afford the social circles in which they exist. This is exactly why their 'democracy' is nothing of the sort.
As far as me being rich because I've got the net - that's just daft.
You're still amongs the reachest people on earth. Poor are those wo cannot eat and haven't got access to medicines. You don't see the "selfish part of you". What's being poor to you?
I'm not here to answer your sanctimonious questions.
The gap between rich and poor in Britain is greater today than it was in Victorian times and only the NHS separates them from the abject poverty of many more millions around the world.
Rich countries shouldn't have people in poverty but while conservatives keep that money in their own circles it is the way it will remain.
Judge a society by how it treats the weakest members in it.
You didn't tell me what's a poor. I think this question annoys you.
So communist countries are better because they give money to the poors?
I think that like many other leftist, you think that poor people are better humans than the rich. The reality is far more complicated and that's a fact.
I totally agree with fact there is no such a thing as a poor. But every response you do refer to those unexisting poors. They are people and their needs, the question is how can they fulfilled those needs?
You get irritated very fast. You told me that "There is no such thing as 'a poor'".
You know what's a leftist: a nice guy who turns red when you disagree. Seeing your reactions i can imagine how red is your face and how disregarding for libertarian you are.
I'm only annoyed by your failure to grasp English correctly - your elitist attitude transmits clearly in any language though and is, sadly, all too familiar for it to be a problem to me.
Libertarianism is the destination for those who are incapable of interacting with normal people who think differently. It's for the weak and the anti-social.
The libertarians are self made men so nothing about the weakness. I'm sure Ron Paul doesn't have friend neither Hannan....You never step back and consider and you try to give lessons about interacting. I only see your anger. And I do not hate you...
Libertarians want to choose if they want to live outside society or not. Most of them leave a normal life with boss, wife, children and friends.
I don't think that everyone has the same chance as me or you. (my father worked in a big factory, was a stranger and hadn't the chance to graduate). Some got rich parents others are smarter than the rest, some got ill and some doesn't want to become rich, some like arts others maths. Some are responsible others don't.
Well Hannity is indeed a wanker but this idiot (Dannan) is talking through his arse, well if you speak fluent bullshit that's the best way to talk with Hannity. Anyway he is dissing the NHS and when he gets back to Britain I almost expect him to have rotten tomatoes thrown at him...
People are up in arms at him criticising a national institution...
i cant believe this drivel passes for news in america. its more like a political broadcast. The NHS isnt perfect but what do you think is a better pilosophy? free (at point of use) heathcare for all, or heathcare for those who can afford it?
Yikes, look at the comments. Looks like the Lefties are out in full force. I wonder if they get paid by clip they smear or hourly?

We haven't - unless you're counting MediCare or MedicAid which have been wildly successful.

Healthcare is an individuals responsibility, not the responsibility of the federal government or me.

whitakerj 2 years ago
There is a place for government, and the level government should be pushed to the most local level possible. For example, there is no room for federal oversight of education. All the Dept of Ed does is waste money in washington.
One of the problems with this administration is that it feels the federal government is better equipped to help the citizenry than the citizenry.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Too, you rode to school on the short bus, didn't you?
As far as taxes are concerned, what right does the government have taking over 45% of my income?
whitakerj 2 years ago
The government has every right: Imagine if the Police force were not run by the government but instead by businesses; you would get no assistance if your house was robbed unless you were insured. Businesses would find ways around paying for protection as they avoid paying for health insurance.
Infact it is well known that the Fire Departments in america and specifically New York were privitised and as a result fire departments fought against one another rather than fighting the fire.
JackedHammer 2 years ago 2
It is the job of government, specifically local government, to provide police and power protection. As far as your silly argument that businesses have gotten out of providing a health insurance, a vast majority of the country is covered.
Now to the point at hand, the US is a country of limited federal govenment, and those powers are spelled out in the Constitution. There is no provision in the Constitution allowing for this interference.
We need to take personal responsibility.
whitakerj 2 years ago
It is a fact that before the Fire Departments were nationilised by the public sector that the private business used to fight, bribe and con the public and each other: The same happens in my opinion with private health care; what happens when someone who has worked all their life cannot afford to pay for treatment when they are ill? I like the idea of knowing if I am diagnosed with a serious illness, unemployed, too ill to work or even just want free impartial advice that the service is there.
JackedHammer 2 years ago 2

GradStud28 2 years ago
If federal government programs tend toward inefficiency and free-market solutions tend toward effeciency, then promoting the general welfare should mean promoting the proven superior model for all services except those outlined in the Constitution.
whitakerj 2 years ago
"Promote general welfare" not "promote a general welfare state" or "provide general welfare"
whitakerj 2 years ago
It would be odd if a late-eighteenth-century document used the term "welfare state", which didn't exist at the time. "Promote" is broader than "provide", but "provision" would fall under "promotion", as would many other things--none of which I'm suggesting be excluded (though it seems as you would like to exclude such provision, even though it already exists in the form of the agencies and services I've already mentioned).

Nationalise something and make it for everyone not for the rich and wealthy, like the selfish news presenter.
omfirstutube 2 years ago
This election cycle proved that journalism is dead. As long as CNNMSNBCABCCBSNBC are considered to be "unbiased" and there are no journalist there to call bullshit, it will remain dead. They have not once really dug into this healthcare bull to point out all of its deficiencies, because they are Obama's cheerleaders.
Fox has the decency of making their conservative tendencies known, but still puts on the opposing viewpoint.
whitakerj 2 years ago
unmotivated,
It is about providing facts that prove a point, which you don't.
If enough people leave the employer will realize they need too in order to compete.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Wow, your post is insightful. I was pointing out a weakness in government owned healthcare system and tried to make it humorous.
And to your point about people with terminal and preventable diseases, nearly everybody in the country is covered by some form of insurance. Except for illegals and those that decide insurance isn't worth paying for, everybody else is covered.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Absolute gibberish! You are free to choose private or public healthcare. Nobody is going to kill off your private insurance. It is partly because of the mass media that so many Americans buy into this neo-conservative crap. They are politically biased and spew irresponsible comments, and disguise them as fact, when, with a little looking up, they are easily exposed as lies. LIES, LIES, LIES!
lcyw20 2 years ago
Actually, Private insurance dies because it makes companies favor the socialistic plan over the free market. Also, it restricts companies from writing new plans, except for congress, of course.
Where in the constitution does it give any sort of power over the healthcare system to the executive branch of government?
whitakerj 2 years ago
Hence the need to reform. The idea of providing better coverage than most insurance companies is very appealing, and at least there will be no issue about not being covered because it was, say, the wrong hospital you went to! I think the insurance companies have done pretty well for themselves. In competition with the government, they'll profit margins may drop, but they will survive, and may be perform even better, more competitively. It's A-level Economics.
lcyw20 2 years ago
Icy, this is not the government's job. and your statement that it is "A-level economics" is silly because we believe in the Free Market as a nation.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Then what is the government's job? And when I say A-level Economics, I was referring to the GCE A-Level course syllabus in the UK--I mean it is rudimentary. The A-levels are the exams we take in England before we enter tertiary education, i.e. university.
lcyw20 2 years ago
I know what A-level means. And your understanding of Free Market Economics is laughable. Competition improves the system not the government.
As far as what is the government's job, it is spelled out in our constitution. You see, America was founded on the principle of limited government. We don't believe in the Nanny-State where the government provides all of life's essentials, rather opting for self-reliance.

There is a lot of BS from both liberals and conservatives on this one.
whitakerj 2 years ago 2
Nevertheless, I find the idea of having to pay for healthcare to be a disgusting one. Perhaps it's just because I've grown up with it, but for me (and I'm guessing most europeans) healthcare should be no different from any other emergency service. Imagine having to quote an insurance number to the police if somone was breaking into your house. It would be nonsensical, so why do americans except it in their hospitals? It seems like they've all been brainwashed into fearing 'evil' socialism.
monkeymox 2 years ago
I don't think any "liberals" are saying hospitals are turning people away emergencies, but people are not getting the preventative care they need which results in massively inflated costs as well as private insurers refusing to insure the people who need it most, dumping those costs onto the taxpayer as well.
When it comes to healthcare, privatization is crazy, just like privatization of the military or police would be crazy.
megamarsvin 2 years ago
Healthcare is already, for the most part, private, so why are you talking like it would have to be privatized.
People will die unnecessarily or live in unnecessary pain due to the rationing that would take place under this plan. Luckily it will never pass.
2010 can't come quickly enough
whitakerj 2 years ago 2
I don't mean it's going to be, I mean it already is. The rationing argument is crazy because even in the countries with single payer there's no more rationing then there is today with the privatized system.
The fact is you're _more likely_ to get denied care by private insurers. That's the real rationing.
megamarsvin 2 years ago
Actually, I know two senior citizens that are canadians. Their doctor said that they need knee replacements. The system didn't approve them, so both came to America, one to NJ one too TX. Our doctors agreed that the replacements were needed, so they had the procedure but paid cash.
There is very little true "denial" by insurance companies when a procedure is truly needed.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Anecdotal evidence is great because you can use it to prove any point at all. I once heard of a woman who couldn't walk and was cured when a priest laid hands on her. So should we move to a faith-healing based approach to healthcare reform?

sioux, As an american, mind your own business. NHS is going to bankrupt your country, we prefer it not happen here. The part of the story that is rarely told is, of the 40 million uninsured number, a great number is made up of illegals (who we shouldn't pay for) and young people who opt out of insurance to save money.
one of the keys to saving our system is booting the illegals out of the country.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Whitakerj, As a Briton you are not knowledgable enough to comment on our NHS. Our NHS began in 1948 to quote " was born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth". We in Great Britain unlike you have a choice of private health care and/or NHS. I am a native born Briton and have a full time job and still choose the NHS for it's top notch service. To be continued.
Siouxsanne1 2 years ago
Continued from last reply.
If I ever I need to go to hospital I know my house and belongings will still be there for me and not taken taken away by the baillif because I couldn't afford the medical bill. Healthcare should be for all. After 61 years our NHS is still going strong thank you very much!
Siouxsanne1 2 years ago
Congrats sioux, you are a ward of the state. We Americans believe the free market is the handle these economic issues. For what it is worth, my uncle was an exec in London and had to take one of his kids to the hospital. Not knowing any better, he went to the government owned facility, in which he described the care as laughable. Also, as a hospital owner, I have never turned away an uninsured patient.

Whitakerj, You own a hospital. You say that you never turn away an uninsured patient, well that is good. What happens if that patient can't pay the fee?
Siouxsanne1 2 years ago 2
95% of the time, I end up eating the expenses. Hospitals are more than willing to work out a payment plan, all people have to do is contact the business office.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Whitakerj, and what if the patient can't afford the payment plan, any payment period? Do you turn them away then? As for our country going bankrupt, it won't be the NHS that will cause that. It will be our piss poor government who must insist on wasting money bailing out the corporate fat cats i.e. banks etc instead of concentrating on vital public services. Speaking of illegals, aren't the only true Americans the "Red Indians". I bet they can't afford decent health care!
Siouxsanne1 2 years ago
sioux, As I said before, I have never turned away an uninsured, if they don't pay, they just don't pay.
And for the record, any true native Americans get free healthcare.
whitakerj 2 years ago
Well that is good then if you say you give free health care to those that don't pay. Is your hospital run like a business or a service then? How do you make enough to run the hospital ? Is it because you make enough from those that are insured? Surely every patient has to pay something. Please enlighten me on how your system works? And why do you think the NHS will ruin our country when we have used it for 61 years? As for the banks, jobs are still being lost even after receiving billions of £s
Siouxsanne1 2 years ago
It is a business and run as such, however, there are many laws against turning away those that need care. And yes, I do make it up on those that are insured. Socialism has never worked well, and for that reason in will ruin the NHS. And by the way if our healthcare is so poor, why do your teeth look so bad?
More jobs would have been lost without the bailout.
whitakerj 2 years ago
our teeth look so bad because we have to get private insurance to pay for them. dental and glasses are private and not covered by the NHS. if it were we would all have lovely teeth. it has never been covered since 1948.

Are you denying that Hannity is liar and propagandist for the loud-mouthed and boorish far right segment of American society?
I imagine he'd be quite happy to oversee the removal of 'undesirables' too.

hannity is a sensationalist. He has no credence.

Agreed. But Hannan speaks the truth!

SitsToReason 2 years ago
Cubans have a higher life expectancy than the residents of Washington DC, which is always a good stat to throw in.

So why don't you go there to live?
saezd 2 years ago
Because I'm deeply un-american - I'm not patriotic, I'm anti-capitalist and I see their 'democracy' as an utterly deceptive sham.
How about you?
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
I see freedom as a pillar for individuals to seek happiness. Human relationship, but only with significant others are an another pillar for happiness. But none of those needs governement to be involved. If you really want to do something for poor people help them to stand proud but not assisted like socialist country.
saezd 2 years ago
the minute the rich start giving a toss about the poor is the minute I'll stop calling them bastards for trying to pull the ladder up.
And who's to say that the poor should work to make the system better by taking part in it themselves?
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
Give me an example of the richs pulling the ladder up. If you've got internet, you probably are a rich.
saezd 2 years ago
The wealthy work on a social strata which dictates that you cannot (and will not) gain the same influence unless you are able to afford the social circles in which they exist. This is exactly why their 'democracy' is nothing of the sort.
As far as me being rich because I've got the net - that's just daft.
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
You're still amongs the reachest people on earth. Poor are those wo cannot eat and haven't got access to medicines. You don't see the "selfish part of you". What's being poor to you?
saezd 2 years ago
I'm not here to answer your sanctimonious questions.
The gap between rich and poor in Britain is greater today than it was in Victorian times and only the NHS separates them from the abject poverty of many more millions around the world.
Rich countries shouldn't have people in poverty but while conservatives keep that money in their own circles it is the way it will remain.
Judge a society by how it treats the weakest members in it.
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
You didn't tell me what's a poor. I think this question annoys you.
So communist countries are better because they give money to the poors?
I think that like many other leftist, you think that poor people are better humans than the rich. The reality is far more complicated and that's a fact.
saezd 2 years ago
There is no such thing as 'a poor'.
And I did answer your question. Try reading my last reply again.
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
I totally agree with fact there is no such a thing as a poor. But every response you do refer to those unexisting poors. They are people and their needs, the question is how can they fulfilled those needs?
saezd 2 years ago
you're a supercilious little turd.
Who taught you that 'poor' can be singular noun?
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
You get irritated very fast. You told me that "There is no such thing as 'a poor'".
You know what's a leftist: a nice guy who turns red when you disagree. Seeing your reactions i can imagine how red is your face and how disregarding for libertarian you are.
saezd 2 years ago
And you called me turd. Well that how leftist respect their antagonist.
saezd 2 years ago
I'm only annoyed by your failure to grasp English correctly - your elitist attitude transmits clearly in any language though and is, sadly, all too familiar for it to be a problem to me.
Libertarianism is the destination for those who are incapable of interacting with normal people who think differently. It's for the weak and the anti-social.
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
The libertarians are self made men so nothing about the weakness. I'm sure Ron Paul doesn't have friend neither Hannan....You never step back and consider and you try to give lessons about interacting. I only see your anger. And I do not hate you...
saezd 2 years ago
They are weak because they believe they can be separate from society. That is weak and incorrect. Who would make their guns?
You can see what you want - and yes, I'm angry that there are people like you who think that everyone has the same chances as you have.
You're a victim of propaganda of the sort that Hannity spews every day and you don't seem to know it.
thecouchtripper 2 years ago
