Russians got lucky with an early and hard winter in the first season of the offensive.. Germans came within inches of taking Moscow and Leningrad. Hitler spread the forces over too wide a front and decided to go for the Caucases and oil fields just for laughs. From today's perspective, we should have let those the Nazis and Russians kill each other. Would have saved Eastern Europe some aggravation. third: the soviet union was centralised, meaning that the power was in stalin his hands if he would disappear it would be a terrible blow
