Music seems pretty mellow - until we get to the part with the crying baby, then it gets urgent until baby gets her long-overdue bottle of milk. Then it goes to a triumphant tone.
More than 30 years later, a wellspring of nostalgia (& tears) have overcome this here Gen-Xer! This indelible SS short's score and vocals remain as hauntingly beautiful today as they were in the 70's.....almost lullaby-esque. It's very amazing & heartening to read how this clip touched so many as it harkens us back to a much simpler era. And seeing the innocent baby having her bottle still wells me up inside :) Thanks very much for posting this classic!
I grew up on a dairy farm about the same time this video was first aired. This takes me back to my childhood. But I never saw a milk man running to complete his delivery. Still this was fun to watch. Thanks.
so here's the skinny on the movie....I'm the guy milking the cows and feeding the 'mouse' cats,, the farm is still milking cows in an updated barn .. I am now 60 and remember the day we did the filming. that was about a hundred lbs. ago .. i don't milk the cows now but my younger brother does in Wayne County Pa

It must have been in my subconscious for years (am 38) but I remembered it all as soon as the singing started, wow. Also it reminds me somehow of George Romero , you could cut that into Dawn of the Dead and it wouldn't look out of place. (Well, maybe, apart from the big MILK logo ;)
suddenly had a flashback to this old song and jumped straight onto youtube...first search result! awesome! yeah I totally grew up to this era of sesame street
This video is one of my earliest childhood memories. They'd never show anything like this today... If they did, it'd have to be some nasty breast feeding video.
Reportedly, when I watched this as a baby, I would become hypnotized. Afterwards, I would toddle into the kitchen, start hanging on the fridge door, and cry out for MEEEEELK. Now whenever I have a glass of milk this song instantly comes to mind. What a wonderful song.
I've had this song (seriously) stuck in my head since 1978/9. I was born in 1975 and heard this song once in the late 70's. Ever since then, the "Milk, mi-ilk" has been constantly reverberating in my subconscious. I order food and hear it. I pump gas, I hear this. I make love...you get it.
i may be 35 now, but i vividly remember this song and video as a wee little boy. it's amazing how this song springs to mind these days nearly every time i feed my newborn son. thanks :) milk, milk milk. i love it.
@saintofconsequence lol literally...I just heard "Honey" recently and was thinking to myself that the bassoon sound seemed awfully familiar but I couldn't place it. Coincidence, or...? I didn't necessarily equate it with richness et al, though
@tronix1990 - It has to be so that it would not be to complicated to children like us back then. Mmm...good times when the world's not as complicated as it is now.
This film always flipped me out when I was a kid! I felt so bad for the kid who was in so urgent need of milk! This was high drama when you're 5! "Can't they get her her milk any faster?!?"
ok, ok we interrupt my normally, bitchy attitude and disposition with a childhood memory. (Warning: do not drink non organic milk, Mansanto has added ingredients that cause cancer. FACT.)
lol. My teacher showed this to our class and i found it pretty hilarious. Everyone in my class won't stop singing this song, and now it's stuck in my head. lol. Sesame street was so much better before i was born. I wish they'd put this on T.V. The baby's adorable.
My friend Corey used to cry alone in his bed until his mom would gently sing him this song. Corey enjoys milk, he is a milk enjoyer. Milk- It does Corey's body good. Hoop YEAH! P.S. This dude from Madison also enjoys milk, and this song.
I love this one takes me back a way they don't run stuff like this anymore........... come to think of it most children are disconected from where their food comes from........
"On the next episode of ICE ROAD MILK RUNNERS, we see a baby with no milk in her bottle, watch as the emergency crew races to fill them up."
I used to run around the house singing this song.. It really is amazing we only pay like $2 for a whole gallon of milk (farmer probably makes $1) when you see all the work that goes into a bucketful from a single cow. Granted it's more automated today, but still.
Oh my goodness, I remember being a child and watching this many many times, and every single time feeling so totally distressed that the baby was crying and being deprived/neglected for so many minutes at a time-- this is a surprisingly long segment! SO EMOTIONAL.
OMG, I just had a floodgate of nostalgia burst open. My mom recorded this when I was a kid, but now the tape is so old and worn it probably wouldn't even play. Thanks for posting!

@Jenna424 You're not alone, Jenna424. This hauntingly beautiful classic clip is as old as I am, and it still wells me up seeing that milk truck driver (which I always presumed was the baby's father) admirably doing his job to get milk home to his hungry daughter. Corny as heck to some in 2011, but seeing this video for the first time in decades just harkens back to a more simpler time. It's great to read how this clip touched so many of Generation-X and beyond! Cheers for "Milk"!
WOW. My sister and I were OBSESSED with this Sesame Street segment back in the day! (like 1979 maybe?) and Now, watching it 30 years later I have NO idea why! We would literally sit and PRAY that this clip would play whenever we watched Sesame street! When it would come on we'd be ALL excited! It's a great album. One of my favorites.I believe the title comes from the name of an medieval english folk song which Traffic does a rendition of on the album.
Does anyone know if this wonderful little gem ever made it on to either of the Sesame Street old school sets? This is what Sesame Street was all about, good music and an easily understandable lesson not hitting the kids over the head or being screamed at them by a google eyed red abomination
the 70's were a great time to be a kid, even after I out grew sesame street I would catch myself playing this in my mind when I would go to the store and still do till this day and im 41, but there is nothing like milk fresh from the farm, you get that 1 or 2 inch layer of cream, 2% 1% or skim is for wusses!
This is some of the most brilliant music I've ever heard. I know this is probably not the case, but I picture Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, and possibly Benny Maupin backing Minnie Riperton to create such an etherial soundtrack. I still choke up 30 years later.
Classic Sesame Street is still great even at the dawn of this new decade!
Very nice job! Keep up the great work! Thanks for posting! A++++++++
Have a great night, a great day tommorrow, a great night tommorrow, a great week, a great weekend, a great month, a great winter, a Happy New Year and a Happy New Decade! All the best in 2010 and beyond! Puerto Rican Love from New York City!
If those parents had wanted to raise a child that could stand its ground in the cold brutishness of the future, they would have cut the BS and put that hose in their baby's mouth and set the pressure to "stun."
Oh my! Still, the driver was determined, he would have climbed out, filled a bottle from his broken truck, and run the rest of the way thru the snow, just to get that baby her milk. At lest that's my impression :)
i blacked out while watching this and when i awoke was sobbing uncontrollably while lying in a fetal position in front of my open refrigerator door in a puddle of milk. the memories of this are much too powerful.
i was driving my sister to the store and my cell went off (ringtone wonderpets "the phone is ringing") and she told me to get the milk song and she starts singing it....i busted a gut and told her i will find the clip to it and post it. when we were kids she use to sing it when it came on and we could not stop laughing. it still funny today...thank for da laughs. i luv it
I'm 31 now and for some reason I've always remembered this. The chick singing was really feeling her some "MIIIIIIILK". My brother and I used to roll when we watched this as kids.
What are you, one of those PETA fascists? If you don't milk the dairy cows, they begin to suffer discomfort. Much like women feel when they stop breastfeeding or don't breastfeed for an extended period of time.
And that baby is old enough to be drinking regular milk.
this freaked me out when i was a kid. very disturbing indeed!!! i love it!!!

the 70's were a great time to be a kid, even after I out grew sesame street I would catch myself playing this in my mind when I would go to the store and still do till this day and im 41, but there is nothing like milk fresh from the farm, you get that 1 or 2 inch layer of cream, 2% 1% or skim is for wusses!

I love how it makes the Milk Man look like a badass.

This is some of the most brilliant music I've ever heard. I know this is probably not the case, but I picture Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, and possibly Benny Maupin backing Minnie Riperton to create such an etherial soundtrack. I still choke up 30 years later.

i hope they homogenized the milk lol

It looked really good coming out of those big 'ol slimy udders, didn't it? Makes you wanna get underneath there and start suckling!
Why didn't the guy just bring the baby one of the cows to drink out of? Or some other milk producing animal???
We have been conditioned to drink milk from another species all the way from birth to death because of the media.
There are many milk alternatives now. Including cheese and ice cream. Break the cow habit - evolve!

@WanderingGnome
I'd like to see the milkman bring over a cow, "Can't get it anymore fresh than this!"

Pasteurization is for WIMPS.
If those parents had wanted to raise a child that could stand its ground in the cold brutishness of the future, they would have cut the BS and put that hose in their baby's mouth and set the pressure to "stun."
No more cryin!!!!

I grew up drinking raw milk. If it's refrigerated you'll be fine.

I have never gotten over this video. I thought it was annoying and lame when I was 4 years old in the 70s; now I'm nostalgic!

This scared the crap out of me when I was a little kid. I was sure that the truck was going to crash and the baby was going to starve.
thebeldame 2 years ago 4
Oh my! Still, the driver was determined, he would have climbed out, filled a bottle from his broken truck, and run the rest of the way thru the snow, just to get that baby her milk. At lest that's my impression :)

I'm 31 now and for some reason I've always remembered this. The chick singing was really feeling her some "MIIIIIIILK". My brother and I used to roll when we watched this as kids.

Shouldn't that baby be drinking Breast milk?
Also, nice to see that the dairy industry is brainwashing children to think they need milk.
All I see is a video about theft, stealing milk from cows!
UniversalTruths 2 years ago
What are you, one of those PETA fascists? If you don't milk the dairy cows, they begin to suffer discomfort. Much like women feel when they stop breastfeeding or don't breastfeed for an extended period of time.
And that baby is old enough to be drinking regular milk.
