Thanks to the Most High that I am natural. My girls are natural as well and they can definitely see the difference in their hair and the hair of those who use chemicals.
PEOPLE just got out of anatomy and physiology and I'm currently transitioning. Okay just as a side note the LOWER the pH the more acidic a substance is... The HIGHER the pH the more basic or alkaline a substance is. Im sure this will change some of his info not a cosmetologist BUT I am in college and learned this information this year. Hope this helps.
@TeeOliver09Thank you, the outcomes are the same and you are correct the lower the PH the more acidic and the higher the ph the more alkalinic (IE Lye active ingredient in relaxers) are 14ph Highly alkaline in contrary to Battery acid PH1 highly acidic. Water is still the main neutralizer and the outcome is still the same. Thank you and I wish you well in all of your endeavors ~Mikal Clay
Whoa buddy! Please go back and read your cosmetology book again!!! Hair is acidic and relaxers are alkaline, which is why the disulfide bonds are able to be broken. I won't school you on what you SHOULD already know, but you are spouting dangerous misinformation to sell a product and no one has checked you on it. Please refer back to your cosmetology book, because it is amazing that you passed a state exam with such backwards information. Hair's pH is around 4.5-5.65 BTW!! geez!!!!!!!!!!!
i would have loved to listen to you properly without this music!! my question is i am thinning in the crown area and found not one but 2 bald spots! its really freaking me out now.. putting more oils and moisturiser there. I been relaxing for years but this April did a tex lax - do you think this may improve things! or should i leave relaxers alone and transition ?
If a relaxer is supposed to be permanent, why does the hair revert back to a kinky/curly state once water touches it?... A dye is also permanent. But unlike a relaxer, my hair doesn't revert back to its original color (black) just bcus water touches it. I'm just sooo confused as to why relaxed hair changes once water touches it lol. Do u think there'll ever be a relaxer that can withstand water?
@covegirl06 Dye and relaxers are two completely different animals. A permanent color may have is a coating that sticks to the fibers of the hair like a tattoo... And a relaxer (analogy) is the equivalent of a henna tattoo (remember I am giving an analogy). Relaxer which breaks the bonds then go back to your normal ph (usually under 7) has a natural reaction when it gets wet (water is a 7ph). The great thing is you can just blowdry or wrap your hair and you will be back to straight again
@mikalclay Thanks for answering my question! I have another question, tho. In your other video you said something about the Ph level of African textured hair being higher than non-black hair. I thought the normal Ph level of hair and skin (regardless of race) was around 5. Your race determines your Ph level??
@covegirl06 I don't know about you... but when my hair is relaxed and it gets wet, it doesn't go back to the original state. It just gets frizzier and more puffy. It doesn't become nappy or kinky. So it is permanent. I think if kinky hair could be relaxed to the point where it was bone straight all the time, it would probably fall out...
@DaKeybladeMasterz Well, I know it doesn't go back to its ORIGINAL state. But I still wonder why the hair needs to be flat ironed in the 1st place. Ppl who naturally have str8 hair don't need to flat iron their hair everytime it gets wet.
@covegirl06 well duhhh ppl with naturally straight hair don't have to straighten their hair cuz it's natural. The reason the perm was made was to make kinky curly hair straight not to change it into Caucasian natural hair
This information is very much needed. Thank you. I just did the B.C. (Big chop) I loved my relaxers, perhaps too much, it's like a drug. Having long soft straight hair is addicting to me. I guess it's true that people want what they can't have naturally. I wanted to ask, How do you cut ends properly when the hair is so coarse? When my hair was relaxed it was so much easier to see split ends.
I posted this video on my facebook account, you really broke this relaxer lesson down for the person that has no concept of what they are doing with home relaxers. Thank you so much.
I am loving being a natural girl and my hair is soooo much healthier now! I always had long hair relaxed but I had to baby it like crazy. Now my hair is so strong and growing fast too. I don't hate relaxers for others but I know I'll never relax again. I love having a whole head of "new growth" Thanks for the vid bro more of us need this kind of education. Keep doing your thing!
You gave some very helpful tips, it's sad that many parents place perms in their kids hair. By time i was in 1st grade, a perm was already in my hair and I dreaded everyone down through the yrs. I started really studying perms and the mess in them now at almost 30, i realize the severe damage I was putting in my hair. I've been natural for 8 months now and my hair is growing, and is healthy. Parents Please Follow the good docs advice! The younger a perm is in, more hair loss the wont return
Mikal's HEALING BALM is AWESOME! I lived in the Chicago area for several years and used it regularly as most of the BSS there carry his line. I am now back in NC and after missing it so much had to order some. I have been transitioning to natural (type 3A all over) for about 9 months now and think this will work even better on my natural hair than relaxed. This is the only product of Mikal's that I have used.
You JUST said "your scalp can suffer chemical burns". Chemical or any burns long term and repeated can and will cause hair loss FACT! That burning will close the follicle. Ask an 8 year old with hair loss because of relaxers, or even a teenager if it is genetic.
My question is I'm a male soccer player in the Caribbean, and it rains here almost every afternoon, so trying to flat iron my wavy/curly hair is almost pointless.
Have yo ever seen a drano commercial? They hair is stuck, they use liquid drano and hair is removed... Drano is 100% sodium hydroxide... As stated in the video Virgin hair=10 Relaxed=8 overlap=6=4 etc. I am NOT against relaxers I am issuing a wake up call period, my video is for education purposes not critic. EVERYTHING I have stated is truth I AM A CHEMIST I MAKE AND HAVE MADE THEM FOR OTHER COMPANIES. This isn't a debate this is mere fact. Bless you, Mikal Clay
But how does applying sodium hydroxide to the hair itself effect the hair follicle which is underneath the skin? That is my question. Also, if someone has their hair relaxed and more growth occurs, what if the entire hair is relaxed and not just the growth?
A tree can loose all of its leaves but the roots are intact. The leaves are gone due to the environment... If the leaves are burned do to climate of fire... Then they aren't in a healthy environment to grow same with your hair! Get it? As far as the second question, watch the video again. I am also teaching classes in ATLANTA for Bronner Bros. Show feel free to check out the class. Blessings & Power
Thank you for your knowledge i am on a new hair journey i will stretch my relaxer as much as possible. Knowledge is power i had to read a lot to change my whole life.
Again, relaxers job is to break hair down (that's not a bad thing) its not (most of the time) the relaxer... Its how its applied that determines the results. You should find a professional to provide all of your chemical needs for your hair.
and our sistas don't know that relaxers are nothing but hair breakage to bad I can't tell my family members that you know they don't want to HEAR IT!!!
This very good information. I need with my daughter hair , her hair is so thick. She has relaxer but sometimes does not take. Today, I stop putting relaxer in her because does not work. I put braids, or she wear it up. I flat and press her hair.
Very good info... I want my hair relaxed, do you have any advice of how often i should relax it so it wont get damaged so much. I now have afro, want it relaxed, should i Re-relax it when i feel it growing curly under the relaxed hair or should i wait a couple of months? ...
It all depends on how you plan on wearing your hair. If you plan on wearing it the wet, curly look that is fine to re-relax when you feel it getting curly. If you are wearing it straight, try to go as long as you can, implementing heat to keep it straight between time.
That is true Rick, lots of guys get or suffer from chemical alopecia from over texturizing. If you had any traits of baldness over processing may speed up the process.. Remember in the video 10-8-6-4-bald, thanks for reaching out brother! Mikal Clay
