As someone who is from neither the US nor the UK... allerdyce does have a point. The reality of the matter is that a lot of comedians who get famous in the US are involved with movies as well, and Hollywood probably has the greatest worldwide reach as far as movie distribution goes. Not that American comedians are better by default; just that my local friends are more likely to recognise Eddie Murphy than Dylan Moran. Which sucks because I don't care for Murphy but really like Moran.
But as Eddie Izzard says, there's no such thing as comedy that is strictly British or American, the universal sense of comedy is generally the same. UK comedy isn't too British to cross national borders, but a lot of people worldwide have easier access to US media - Certainly the case for me.
On the other hand, there are UK comedians known worldwide. Monty Python, Eddie Izzard as mentioned, Peter Sellers... and Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean is astoundingly inescapable.
i live in france too. But obviously french is just right across the channel to the UK, and you guys learn british english. If you guys learn about comics, it will obviously be british ones. But ask your french friends and see how many UK comedians they know in contrast to american comedians, because i know for a fact that american celebrities are much more popular among the youth in france.
