Expensive is a big word... Ambilight televisions cost you money while sacrificing picture quality, AMBX is quite cheap, but very hard to come by these days, and this application (ADAlight) is not really that expensive, although it's not 100% useful, as some programs don't work with the lights, and DirectX and such aren't supported, so no gaming additions...
But pricewise: $25 for the Arduino controller, $46 for the LEDs, $5 for the 5V-adapter, it's not THAT expensive... Still, you must have fun while creating it, otherwise the system would be too expensive indeed.
@Sudden3B0L4 ok i thought thats a 1000$ TV with integrated background lights =( . Its sad that it doesn't support games but in the dark with good movies u can impress ur friends :D
I could have been a bit more descriptive in the video desciption, true ;) Also note that it's filmed in front of a mettalic wall, which does increase light reflection, but also makes the light form more of a spot, instead of a spreaded light.
I'll probably receive 25 more leds this friday, so keep looking for my videos if you're interested ;)
@ttttje
If you're so interested in Ambient Lighting working with games, you should look for AMBX.

'no need' what? You don't need this system? I wouldn't recommend this, as it's hard to get it to work right. But still, the effect is cool, no?

@Sudden3B0L4 the effect is cool but its just to expansive. the flashlights are very nice. but the rest is awesome but not awesome enough
