The software update rendered my Roku player useless. I sent it back and received another player that does not work. Netflix stated that they have been getting a lot of calls on this problem. Roku stated they are trying to fix the problem, but are making no headway. Take this into account before you order one, it my be best to wait until they get it right.

Nice review. However, you didn't mention that Netflix only streams a small % of it's vast library this way, and certainly not the latest DVD releases.
i have 1.7mb and there is 4 people in my house. so how much do we need to properly serve us all. and what is the recommended speed for online gaming and hd video streaming like net flix?????
@ilovemaryam08 All the companies that sell these players recommend 1.5 mbps to view non-HD content, but to view the HD stuff, they recommend at least 4.5 mbps. I have about 6.5 mbps, so I can view HD content all the way.
Thank you Man of the House. You're the only good and complete review of this product that I found on the net. You told me everything I need to know. Thanks again.
I love this thing! And now they actually stream in 720HD so there are literally no drawbacks to this thing.Someone could feasibly get the cheapest Netflix subscription with unlimited streaming and this box and always have something new to watch with or without a DVD in the mail.
lolz "you have ogtta get one of these" get an xbox 360. its that and a game console, and a music player, and twitter (soon) and facbook (soon) all for $350. ($50 for the xbox live subscription)
Hey, i am getting 2 roku boxes on thursday... what is your internet speed? cuz i am a little worried about the video quality... do you have fast internet? i have 15mps... - thanks
I have AT&T DSL coming into my home, which is plugged into an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router. The Aiport is 802.11b & g enabled and says it supports a maximum of 54MBS within a range of 50 feet and 11MPS at 150 feet. My Roku box is within that 50 foot range, but I have no real way of measuring what speed it's connecting at. I almost always get maximum quality when watching the Roku player. The only time it chokes up and my quality goes down is if I'm also downloading a lot to my laptop.
@okcreative Why don't you just run a connection test online, and make sure everything you use with your internet is turned off except the window of the test on your browser. This way you get the highest speed your able to get. I did it the other day, and it says I get 6.5 mbps out of 7, which is what Qwest offers around here.
Thanks, this answered most of my questions. does it support dual hookup? HDMI to TV for video and optical cable to stereo (for surround home theater)?? can we view Youtube over this?
I haven't upgraded to a BluRay player because I'm happy with the way standard DVDs look on my HDTV (I should note I have an up-converting tuner that everything is routed through). The only thing you need to be aware of is the currently limited selection of "Watch Now' titles on Netflix..., although this will no doubt continue to grow.
My mom has the blue ray dvd player for her netflix, and that cost her 300 + I think you just sold me on this! I was really curious of the quality...and green with envy of your 92 inch screen projector.....So yeah, would you like to adopt a poor college student LOL jk
Unfortunately, you can't record the movie while you're watching it. Just like purchased movies, there's an analog signal that scrambles any attempt to record it. :-(

I'm not sure, to be honest with you. If I had to guess, I would say 1.5 mbps. It's AT&T's dsl service.

hey! so how fast is your internet? 1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 mbps?

It has multiple outs, yes. I have HDMI going to my receiver (which also processes the audio). I also have component out going to my projector.
At the moment, YouTube video cannot be viewed with the Roku player.
