Hardware, not software, determines why the capsule can land. A few degrees and gas release to angle the capsule like that is still possible to calculate with 10-20 pocket calculators and a group of highly trained men.

Apollo 13 got by with pretty much manual reentry, one year later. Imagine, how dissed would you be if you made a huge trip to another place deep in space, and you came back down to a million disbelievers?

My family actually drove through Houston the day they had their Apollo 11 parade with the astronauts. My father didn't want to "get in the middle of that mad house".
