fdny runs off a set of computer tones. where the system has a voice that tell what truck to go where and at the same time a call is sent to the desk. the desk is area similar to a dispatch room at your station. the desk then answers the phone and the phone is linked to a dispatcher who tell them where to go. most of the time the person at the desk is the shift officer or a driver.
FDNY doenst get a phone call from the CO but gets the additional information faxed and printed at the desk. Also they get that same information in their MDT in the truck. The backup system is the voice alarm, where the dispatcher speaks directly into the fire house speakers.
Before we switched to UHF, we were low band, 33.820, and with our tones was a DTMF signal that ring first to set off our siren. I can't tell you how many times I'd hear that in the night from the scanner, and I'd wake up to hear the pager tones before it even went off. Amazing, sound asleep, and I'd hear that and be awake before the pager trips. On the UHF I can't tell any of them apart.
i'm very familiar with the mechanicstown, middletown, otisville, pocatello, vails gate, monroe, tuxedo, florida, warwick, greenville, johnson, new hampton, slate hill(the district i live in) I've heard them all on my scanner

That's a 1970's vintage Ward LaFrance P80 Ambassador with a rescue body on the rear. That rig is still used today.
