This, IMO, is the most scenic section between Hastings and LaCrosse. Too bad there's too much traffic these days to fully appreciate it.

I think US 61 used to exist past St Paul to Duluth and Thunder Bay, Ontario. anyhow thats a really lovely drive.

@louky264 Thanks. The route north of the cities was retired back in 1990. Im not sure why.

@eluko79 Probably the long overlap with I-35 from Wyoming (MN) to Duluth. Personally I think they should've kept it US all the way to Canada, and just hidden it on 35 (with signs saying "[US 61] follow [I-35]" at the ends), like they did with US 12 on I-394 and I-94 from Minnetonka to western WI, and US 52 on I-94 from St. Paul to the middle of ND.
