Laerd, got your mssg.. Listened to C. Black, Warwick of 1964, L. Vandross, D. Springfield do this wonderful song...just to be certain of what I said in my original post, and I will stick by what I said in that post.
With Dionne (1964, only---her much later recording was forgettable), the sound was of a young girl with a good voice doing a great song.
With Judd, the sound was of a good singer, a great song, filling it with grown-up passion and pain.
This is obviously Dionne singing decades after she made her original recording. And this version is not as compelling or as nuanced as the 60's version. She has just come out with an autobiography.
I realize Dionne and Burt were great partners for a long time, but, if you want to hear what this song should really sound like, listen to Wynonna Judd and Burt b., in concert.
@555kappock Liked Judd, but you have to acknowledge that the upper notes were a bit difficult for her in that performance. Warwick here is singing in a lower key than the original. Takes the edge from the emotional content, to be sure. This is a wonderful that worked for so many singers and seemed to bring out similar qualities in each of the female voices singing. The men did okay with this, but not as well IMO. Mr. B and Mr. D created a wonderful classic with this composition.
anyone who had a heart would look at me and know that i love you so anyone who had a heart would take me in his arms and love me too you couldnt really have a heart and hurt me like you hur t me

For me, that made all the difference.
