am i the only one that thinks 300 dollars for a 15 year old oldsmobile with a bad egine is NOT that good of a deal, hardly worth making a video about.
@sipperothouwater it would appear so especially since the motor still hasnt gone up and the cost of the car plus the cost of the motor that is still sitting in the shop hasnt come anywhere near the book value
Congratulations on your $300 find; it's been well over a year - how's it going for you now? I sold my '66 mustang a couple months ago for $8300 to pay some bills and buy a milk cow (haha, true) and thought we could get by with just our '96 F350 but there were times we wish we had a 2nd car and yesterday we were offered a '95 cutlass supreme for $1500; it'd been owned by an elderly woman who passed away and seems well worth the money; drives and feels like much more than a $1500 car
my thoughts exactly... just been waiting for the next oil change, I wanted to see if the noise got any worse without some kind of treatment, and it hasnt so Im pretty sure it isnt severe
I'll have to check that out. I have used the high mileage? SLick 50. Stuff is thick like syrup and works great. It took care of an engine knock/tick for me two yrs ago and I still drive that car. Avg about 20K/yr
another sweet deal man. those 3.1L are know for bad intake leaks i have done about 10 intake gaskets on those for people not a bad job.hope it keeps going for ya
yeah no kidding Ive done a handful myself... but Ive heard some really good things about these motors so hopefully it will last a while longer... and I guess if it goes up Ive got a spare so what the hell lol
thats kind of like when I bought the pocket bike i used to have... the guy wanted 300 and he thought the battery or starter was bad so we talked and he brought himself down to 200 then after a while i said would you take 180 an he said yeah... it turns out he never fully charged the battery... then i got the cops called on me for riding it in my street... so i put it for sale for 300 and i ended up trading a guy for a new in box nitro powered rc truck thats worth like 450!!!!!
yeah he won a 1978 oldsmobile tornado on ebay by mistake for only 300 bucks and it ran perfect with 180k miles. he sold it to someone local last summer and i see it around town every day. it may look like a piece of shit but shes still a reliable car!
well depends on what kind of ticking it is does a sound like a nail hitting a peice of metal or perhaps a midget in your oil pan with a hammer... could be very minor could be pretty major
well i guess I didnt tell you much the ticking that is light like the nail on metal will usually be lifter noise if its coming from the top side... and if it sounds like the midget option that usually means youve got a broken rod and that is some very bad news
check the oil and change it. if it still is ticking then you need to find out where the noise is comming from.could be anything from a lifter to a rod bearing.
of course i change the oil every 3 months or earlyer depends when it is getting dark on the dip stick and its been ticking since we got the car to me it sounds like a rod bearing you can really hear it when i start it up in the morning actually i can here it every time i start it up got any ideas hope its not a rod bearing i dont want to take it to gm they dont know there ass in the hole in the grand hahah
well if it does it more prominently when its cold or for a few seconds after you start it up every time then I would almost lay money down that its a top end noise
Could be a mal adjusted rocker or two.. I'm sure you have to remove the rocker arms and push rods to do an intake on those engines... If you relash the rockers perhaps it will be totaly silent.
I got one for 500 just like it. Pretty powerfull for its time and great to drive. Too bad it keeps stalling out all the time. Still, neat car.

@horsedesigns its worked out very well, and they are an excellent car to drive
wagner59270 1 year ago
@wagner59270 Thanks - glad to hear it. I've perused the reviews and not found any fatal engine flaws in the car's history, which is also reassuring

you will....the cutlass curse will be but 300 bucks thats a win

Im with 98eck; sounds like if u give it some fuel/oil treatment and the noise will hopefully go away....
matts6887 2 years ago
If it ticks change the oil and throw some Slick 50 in it. Should go away in less then a min after you start it back up, at least thats what I found.

wagner59270 2 years ago
to 98eck: I never tried slick 50....but I have tried Rislone oil treatment for noisy engines....works pretty well

How long is that stuff good for. The Slick 50 orginal is good for like 50K? miles on just one quart being added one time.
