  • I love to knit and crochet and even more so quilt. i taught myself all these arts. but socks are my nemesis. i can't conquer them. i want to learn to do them so bad before our 4 kids grow up. i just found your video and im hoping yours will be the one that i finally get that light bulb moment on.... i get as far as loading all my dpn's, but then get kinda lost. God bless and thanks for the upload even if i don't get it lol.

    Barbara

  • not a good video for beginners

  • This will be my first time knitting socks, so I'm happy if it's a bit loose on my feet =]

  • glad to see the english method of knitting. i started socks, but never made it to the end., i think i'll retry them. it doesn't seem so intimidating anymore.

  • OMG the way she started the stitches is totally different from how i start, but this tutorial is great considering i am left handed, so, kinda the other way round.

  • People are being really hard on you, they seem to expect you to teach them how to knit rather than how to use DPNs! Thank you so much, this was really helpful. :)

  • how much do i cast on for a teen size?

  • How the... how am i suppose to learn how to get the stitches first. seriously i can't see what she is doing and i would really like to learn is there a video i can watch to get how to actually get the stitches on???

  • @LoveAhiru I suspect this video was made under the impression that you already know how to knit. There are many beginner videos out there. To start you cast your stitches onto one needle then divide them evenly onto three of the needles and the fourth needle is what you will knit with. You knit with the fourth needle transferring the stitches from one needle to the fourth needle which frees up your fourth needle. This seemed straight forward to me.

  • talk directly into the camera or get a mic

  • 40 years of knitting, and I have finally worked out the mystery of the 4th needle!!! big thank you for your video... now I can get started!

  • I thought it would be hard but I tried it and made my 1st pair of socks. It wasn't too bad! I was thrilled when I turned my first heel. What fun!

  • Brilliant! Thank you so much you deserve a medal.

  • seemes both easy and hard but as for right now i don't have any DPN at the carront time :( . it also seems fun making socks for you and your family and friends

  • huh?

  • I can hear the background better than dorret. :( I think what I see looks interesting though:)

  • maybe a tip for a next video: label the needles (or use different colors) so the viewers can see the position of the needles when the work is turned.

  • this looks so hard... :-( I would love to knit socks for my boyfriend (for Xmas) but this is impossible to follow....I can only knot scarffs (plain pattern), this is too challenging... is there an easier way to knit socks?

  • what is that cast-on you are using, I've not seen that before, but I like the look of it - do you have a video showing how to do that one? I can't see it very well in this video, or at least does it have a specific name that I can look up?

  • @moosedawg71 I think it is called Italian cast on...the is a video explaining how to do it.

  • Thank yu for this vid. I have crocheted several pairs of socks and really wanted to learn to knit a pair. So many instructions read as though I'm supposed to know how to get started. You simply saying 'Start with the needle WITHOUT the tail' made such a difference for me. At least I now know I can get started on the cuff. I will look for you when I'm ready to move on to the next part!

  • I found this really helpful. :) I watched some other videos but I couldn't figure out how to join it in the round! But with this one, I finally got it. :) thanks xx

  • Great clip thanks. I'm just starting out and have picked up some good pointers at ebeginnersknitting (.) com

  • Can you please do a video of how you cast on and explain it, I would love to learn that method, I have never seen it before. Thanks

  • I like how you cast on. It is similar to what I do...I prefer 5 needles to avoid the laddering, thou I do shift my stitches thru out.

  • nt clear at all...

  • What a great teacher you are. I've been battling to learn how to do this. Your video made it all clear in minutes. Thanks so much.

  • Thanks for this video! I actually just watched it without the intention to learn to knick socks, i just found it a really nice video, and of cours very informative. Now I'm off to get some needles and yarn, thanks for the inspiration!

  • I been wanting to knit socks. Had a book but hasnt explained as well as you have and I havent even gotten to the heal yet.

    Great Job

  • Dear Dorret,

I must tell you, I have referred to this set of 4 videos on sock knitting at least 20 times.

Your explanation has been the only one I've made sense of and I thank you for your fabulous videos (and sock knitting skills!)

    Thank You!

  • wow you are so good at explaining things in this video. thanks so much!!

  • holy crap! you are FAST!

  • can you do this with the round needles instead of using the individual ones?

  • I've never seen someone cast on like that before!

  • Dorret, ive just followed this is practice and discovered that one side is automaticly purl and the other stocking tich! amazing! and in my experiment i have also foudnt hat if i wanted to cast of and make a somple tube , how do i cast of so that the top is joined? your help please would be appreciated. thanks, Joe.

  • confusing

    i can only make scarfs

  • Exactly. *nods*

  • i'm very happy with this! As long as you know the common basics, which if you don't just try it and you will get the idea right away. YOu may need to start over, but practice makes perfect!

  • No good as this vid cuts away at the crucial bit when you need to see how to position your needles when knitting that first row!!

  • Great vid, made knitting on dp's look easy(ish) so I'm going to have a go - couldn't really see what was going on when she was talking about the marker stitch though.

  • i love socks and Dorrret is great!

  • ughhhhh to many needles intertwining

  • You did the change from the finished needle tothe next too quick and without showing what you had done.

  • Very nice! She explains so easy, I finish a couple pairsof them! I'm starting a pair for my hubby!

  • that was tooo hard to follow =S

  • I personally think she does a great job at showing how to knit socks. I have an elizabeth zimmerman book that explains how to knit socks. This video shows a better understanding of what I read....I finished one sock! Now on to its mate ((worried)) lol

  • This was incredibly helpful. Thanks for sharing!

  • Beautiful work...Thanks for sharing

  • You don't know shit about knitting. She did an excellent job explaining how to use the 4 needles to create a tube.

  • I've seen a video with someone using circular needles but it looks so difficult. I recommend using DPNs. And its always fun to learn!

  • could one also use circular needles?

  • Comment removed

  • This is the one of the only videos I've found so far that shows how to start a sock with dpn's. Unfortunately, I can hardly see her work, and she moves too quickly without explaining how to place the needles or what she's doing. I was able to get the yarn on the three needles and sort of figure out how she was holding them, but after that, I can't see what she's doing at all.

  • thanks so much for this! so useful!

by the way i love your accent. what kind of british accent is that?

  • So how do you determine the number of stitches? Surely it has to be different for each person, because of our ankle size? Do you measure your ankle or something?

  • This is just a demonstration of how to use double pointed needles , such as you would for making socks. She mentions that in this demonstration she will cast on 30 to show as an example, but the number of stitches you cast on will be determined by whatever pattern you are using to make socks with. And yes, that number varies per person, but check your sock pattern to find out how many stitches to cast on for your size sock.

  • It's a great informative video.

If only the camera was closer.

I totally missed how to join to form a tube which is where my problem is in making socks.Oh how I dream of making a pair someday..I'll keep looking for a video closer up.

  • i love socks

  • lame video you need to get a better cammra man, and put some light music in the back round it will keep people more interested.

  • Does anyone else laugh at how she says tube? She says it like chube!:) I busted up laughing the first time I heard that.

  • you know what CALCRULES? i dont think it at ALL. i betcha you cant say jkhslidbljkBFKJai:kNHF! AND IF YA THINKS THAT STUPID , YOURE STUPID.

  • The needles... LOL Im new to knitting so I dont know the proper names for things

  • Ah I need to get another set of knitting thingies before I can make these... but I am bookmarking this tutorial for later.

  • Knitting thingies?

  • omg soooo complicated

  • Excellent video!! I have not been able to understand how to make socks, now it is crystal clear!! Thank you!!

  • Hi all, I just bought my first skeins of sock yarn tonight, and I was looking for a sock tut to learn how to knit socks, and I'm so glad I found this one! Happy knitting all! :)

  • I love your videos. They are wonderful. I have wanted to make socks for a long time, Just didnt know how so now I am going to start right after I am done typing this comment. Thanks again

  • dorret....u r wonderful to watch...i have been knitting socks for about a year now....and i will say, i learned watching ur video's...

right now, i am making a second sock, and i am just watching ur videos just for the heck of it.

  • Wow, it's interesting that an "English" person has such great videos about how to knit on dpns in the English style! I really appreciate your over the shoulder video, and how no nonsense you are! I"m tired of videos that show you how to knit in the round using the continental method. Thanks so much!

  • Since I can't follow written instructions these vidios are amazing!!! nice one

  • I love your accent

  • this is really good

  • this is great thank you. I have been wondering how to do this. This series is perfect.

  • These are great! Could you please demonstrate the cast on really slowly. Just like another commenter, I have never seen that one. Your videos are really helpful!

  • Great video - thanks for posting!

  • hello mary

  • thanks i downloaded the Videos

  • Man that looks so hard....

  • @MissJayyjay it's not, it's very easy, although i prefer to magic loop method, myself.

  • I have never seen that method of cast-on before...can you demonstrate it slowly and upclose?

  • do you plan on making any "socks on circular needles using magic loop" tutorials? I just can't get my hands to do the DPN thing.

  • why do u use a double pointed needle

  • To knit into a loop you use either double ended or connected needles.

  • oooo ok thnks

  • thanx Ive always wanted to knit

  • THis is an awesome video. So clear and easy to understand. I have only knitted a scarf but your instructions are very easy to follow. I hope to try it someday. Thank you so much for your patience to teach. YOur Great!!

  • Very, very helpful! Thanks!

  • I am so glad I stumbled across your videos! I am a new knitter and I'm apparently an "experiential" learner because I could NOT figure this out via my knitting manuals. Your videos are perfect for a noob like me. :)

  • Oh my gosh, you are so cute! Thanks for the help, this is all new for me. : )

  • What do you have to do when you finish with the third needle, and what do you have to do with spare needle?

  • Thank you so much, this video is so useful, Thank you so much .. soooooooooo much *hugs*

  • i want thank you for your explication, think i will be able to doe it now

    cloclotje

  • I love this! It's pretty clear! And looks simple! I haven't started knitting yet but I sure will!

I have a question thought, is it possible to knit a sock with just two regular knitting needles?

Also, where could I find good simple socks patterns?

    Thanks.

  • wow!!! I knit very differentley...your way looks extremley complicated

  • I just learning how to knit, and I like your videos.I have already learned one stitch, and think it's called stockinette.I've already made a few scarves already. How would you do the knit stitch, and to use in making a scarf?

  • I have purchased countless books to learn how to knit but this is by far the best and easiest way! I had no desire to knit until I could not learn in Swedish then it became imperative!

  • see that i have been looking all over to find instructions on dpn it doesnt look that hard.. bren

  • okay I'm frustrated because how do you split the stitches onto the other needles?

  • Put stitches on the first needle as shown, do the same with needle 2, the remaining stitches stay on cast on needle.

I find that laying the needles down as shown gets stitches in position without them getting twisted and/or ending up knitting inside out - the two common problems for most people - and I include myself - which is how I ended up devising this method for making it work.

  • This tutorial is so great. I have had such a hard time learning how to get started with DPNs, and this was the only video tutorial that I actually could understand. I tried a bunch of other sites and videos and was getting so frustrated until I watched this one... then suddenly the light went on. THANK YOU!

  • This video is great. I found a ton of tutorials online and in books but could not get the hang of using DPNs at all. I watched this video and got it right away. Thank you SO much.

  • I tink you are marvelous with your knitting. I knitted a so\ck with two heels, smile. I have been knitting since I was 10 years ole, now I'm 74 and still haven't made socks yet. You are very plain and I can understand what you are teaching. I appreciate the things you are doing!!!!Sincerely Oma

  • i try to learn but no use =( my grandma sure had a hard time teachin me

  • Wow, thank you!!

  • It was great, even without benefit of audio on my work computer! :-) Thanks for sharing.

  • I find it amazing how you work with so many doublesided needles with such minimal effort. You make it look easy (while the rest of us are impaled trying to do that sort of thing!) hehe. great video.

  • I'd love to see how you do that cast on.
