Videos like these were the watermark for the new decade. I think it demonstrated sincerity on the part of TL, they seemed fresh-faced and were good looking! Philo and Scott had style, a great rapport, and even though smack was flavoring this they were like Cheech n' Chong here!
This is so my song single for 7 years and counting. I could not help but notice a few talking about thin lizzy and zeppelin, and in my opnion I think lizzy is better then Zellepin. Just for the fact that when you put in Zeppelin I find myself skipping songs, but when I put in Thin Lizzy the only button I push is volume up. That is just me though
Thin Lizzy recorded this is as well on the live killers EP. This is my favorite video of all time. It does not get any better than that. Such charisma!
Sure, I could be wrong, but, the footage appears to be from the early 80s, and this song is a release from his first solo album, "Solo in Soho", the styling of the video is exactly as appears on the album artwork. This was a Phil Lynott single, not a Lizzy single, and as far as I know, never was released by Lizzy.
@deirdrec1 I did not know that, but the band are clearly Scott Gorham, Snowy White and Brian Downey, therefore they are Thin Lizzy.... Check it out and tell me
What does it Matter what he was Chewing!!....He is No Longer with Us..:-( Sooo Missed By Us All..The Music Industry and His Family...RIP The Greatest Lyracist Of Modern Times xx
@Bonoerra cause i think it's funny he is smacking his jaws in the middle of this hilarious video. Phil had the best stage presence of anyone I have ever seen. it may not matter to you but I found it funny
@fultonfroth I Agree With You Actually..........And I Totally Understand where u are Coming From, And YES He Was Indeed The Greatest Frontman I Ever Knew Of..Including Freddie Mercury etc. All I Was Saying Was That What does It matter NOW...25 Years Later What he was Chewing!!!...Thats All!!
@fultonfroth Y"know......It May Well Be Tobacco he Is Chewing!!!!.......OR...Most Unlikely!!!!..It was Nicorette Chewing Gum!!!.....Lol.....Hahaha.....RIP The Lord Of Rock---Philip Lynott xxx
@Bonoerra well put. My father rocked out to Thin Lizzy all through HS in the 70's so he actually was the one who got me into them. He used to call real poppy tunes, "bubblegummy." Come to think of it the beat to this song sounds kinda like someone snapping bubblegum, so maybe that's what Phil was getting at, IDK? I had never actually heard of this song until recently so it's new to me. I agree with you and glad there some folks that give Phil his due. We said brotha...Phil is the reigning king!
believe it or not i was the 1st person in the UK to have the single Whiskey in the Jar in the early 70's when i was a part time DJ i gave a copy to 2 others and the 3 of us would play it whenever we could. i'm sure Lizzy would still have been a huge hit without our little contribution. however i got to meet Phil & the band in 1975 in there dressing room after the show & told them the my little story, they said we wondered why everyone in the south west knew the song. gr8 memories.
Actually this wasn't a Lizzy project. this song meant for Phil's solo project. Weird seeing the other guys from Thin Lizzy performing this song. Still a great song.
All of the current Lizzy members (at that time) played on his solo album. Some of them didn't even know at times if they were working on a Lizzy album or Phil's solo album. Apparently, they recorded this album and Chinatown at the same time, thus the confusion among band members.
Good to see phil and the boys having fun. Most of later lizzy material (esp off renegade and Thunder n lighting) was dark, but they could write catchy pop tunes with the best of them.
To be a little more precise: this song feels very much like Lizzy for obvious reasons: the goofy chemistry between Phil and Scott and the very sound of it. So never mind, frankly, that it appeared on 'Solo in Soho'. The solo alone makes it as much Scott's song as Phil's (I'm remembering who did the solo right, right??? Lusting after Phil too much I guess, though I quite fancy Scott as well).
When the lads are clearly having genuine intimate ironic fun as a band (okay, we all know Snowy White can't 'express' fun but I suspect even he was havin' some) - which you can also see in the vid for 'Sarah' - they make early video look like a breeze and they get you to feeling like you're right there clowning around yourself. And that's a kind of genius in its own right, never mind that this number is in my Lizzy top five. Odd how incredibly awkward the girls are here, tho.
Might not feature on a Thin Lizzy album but the track was played by Brian Downey, Scott Gorham and Snowy White, ie the Renegade line up of Thin Lizzy.
Although it's only Thin Lizzy members performing on this song, it's a Phil Lynott solo effort, taken from Solo In Soho, written by Jimmy Bain and Lynott.
@ROCKKERFAT Underated by WHO exactly???? Why do people keep saying this? They were one of the world's biggest bands in the late 70s/early 80s & they still have a loyal army of fans worldwide despite breaking up nearly 30 years ago. They're not underated at all.
@whitbyjet65 THIN LIZZY of course!!! or you think that are more people who know Thin Lizzy than Led Zeppelin, for instance???? Wake up kid!!! Thin Lizzy deserves the Rock n Roll Hall of fame much more than metallica
PS: I love LED, but THIN LIZZY is so much better!!!!
@ROCKKERFAT kid???? I'm 46 years old for Christ's sake! So using your logic, if a band isn't as big as Led Zep it means they're underated. That means EVERY rock band is underated then. For the record Lizzy had glittering chart success in the 70s/80s whereas Zep had none. Rock n Roll hall of fame? Who gives a shit about that corporate bullshit? Awards like that are for pseudo rockers not genuine rockers.
@whitbyjet65 I just talkiing about LIZZY , Im not kid , old man, I just said a FACT
THIN LIZZY deserves much more than they reach, ofcourse they accomplished a lot a things , but for they musical skills ,they are greater than LED, thats another fact , PERIOD!!!
@ROCKKERFAT Just checked the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame (1st time I've ever looked). I don't see Rush in there but I see Billy Joel. If that's what it's all about I'm glad Lizzy aren't in it! Between 1973 & 83 Lizzy had 17 singles in the UK charts & all their albums hit the top 50 (6 getting into the top 10). This is not the history of an underrated band. In 1978 Lizzy played to a crowd estimated at 100,000 at the Sydney Opera House. Yeah! Such an underrated band!
@ROCKKERFAT I can only assume you come from a country that didn't take to Lizzy. I know they didn't set the world on fire in the USA whereas Kiss were huge. Nothing against Kiss but I'm glad I was on the other side of the pond so I experienced the Lizzy phenomena. I'm struggling to think of a rock band that had more chart success & exposure than Lizzy in the 70s & 80s. I saw Lizzy live every year from 1978 & every gig was a sell-out & the crowd went ape shit. Lizzy were HUGE!
@reditch I saw this performed live at the royal standard walthamstow in 1984 with phil lynotts grand slam long live phil lynott truly a magical performer.
