What I don't understand was why would Serena would turn it to a personal attack on the umpire rather than just sticking with the issue.
@jsparrow615 What about grunting as they hit the ball, that becomes much louder just before the ball is hit by the opponent? Sharapova does this and so does Nadal. Their grunt starts off loud but gets even louder, to the point of screaming, just before their opponent hits the ball. Many players do this but are not penalised like Serena was.
@temp850 Grunting is another issue. Lots of male & female tennis players grunt, Serena & Venus Williams grunts as well. Others are ridiculous. Compared to shouting "come-on!", tennis players can't control grunting. *They grunt as soon as they hit the ball, not as soon as the opponent will hit the ball*. They may shout "come-on" NOT as soon as they hit the ball neither before the opponent strikes the ball. Unlike "come-on", grunting after the point is still unheard to these days.

Bellowing "come-on!" before Stosur hits the ball is a deliberate-hindrace, because it's something CONTROLLABLE by the players, so the other player wins the point. Things like hat or jewelries e.g. falling from the player or something outside the player’s own control is considered unintentional, then the point should be replayed.
What I don't understand was why would Serena would turn it to a personal attack on the umpire rather than just sticking with the issue.

Compared to shouting "come-on!", tennis players can't control grunting. *They grunt as soon as they hit the ball, not as soon as the opponent will hit the ball*. They may shout "come-on" NOT as soon as they hit the ball neither before the opponent strikes the ball. Unlike "come-on", grunting after the point is still unheard to these days.

Even though it may be an accident shouting "come-on" before the point is over, there is a RULE that must be adhered. So players should make sure that the ball has really died before shouting come-on. Or else the point will be given to the opponent. It's just unfortunate for Serena bec. it's on break point.

But that's not the issue. The issue is that Serena violated Rule 26 of the USTA. So a point was awarded to her opponent. USO is under the USTA Point Penalty System. The code of conduct, as well as penalties, vary by competition authority.
