Wow its really nice of you to take the time to share your thoughts on this issue in such a public venue. I wasn't aware it was an issue in that many tribes. Myself I am 1/4 Cherokee, 1/16 Lenape & unknown percentage Creek and Choctaw yet am labeled as white because I was not born on the reservation. It's a slap in the face people when real NDNs are not accepted by tribe. Not everyone wants to join in order to get healthcare or checks. If only there was a blood test to prove identity.
it's all a bunch of political speech as far as I am concerned.. and we do get slammed even though we are enrolled.. the victim becomes the victimizer?? interesting.. not trying to be a negative nigel, but I know from first hand experience, the rez is ran by ugly lateral violence, and it's overlooked, and the most poverty strucken shout it out, but because they are poverty ridden, they are ignored, people turn their heads the other way.. I call it population controll.. even to this day!! 2010..
well, the enrollment issue was NEVER figured out and it's 2010.. I have relatives that are not enrolled, they are FORGOTTEN.. and can prove their residency, and it starts will prejudice enrollment commitee members.. IMAGINE THAT!!! within our own tribe.. I know woman who is enrolled she is 4 Kids, and only 2 of them are enrolled, the other two are not, and currently are barely covered for medical issues, is that OUR WAY?? no it's not.. its atrocity!!!!
I've been trying to get enrolled in the Tulalip Tribes since I was 18 and can't because my Mom was enrolled Yakima at the time of my birth but yet I was raised out on that reservation, and my Mom is a full blood
What about the ALLOTTEES and DISENROLLED Indians that still live on the Rez? It's not about "town" Native American's but many Reservation Indians that have had ALL their Rights as Native American's stripped from them. Health Care, Tribal Schools, Voting Rights, Educational Assistance. Good point the BIA wants nothing to do with this problem, everyone passes it off onto someone else.
This is a huge problem with all of the various nations, the worst part is you can be fullblood but not enrolled and therefor not respected even by other indians. Especially big issue on the east coast where people think indians are extinct!
Good words Don!!!! You always have good words, especially when you we're speaking at my mother Pearl Conlow's funeral 10-20-08 in La Push. You know it makes people feel good when people show their love and support for other natives. My mother told me before, that she had to tell another elder on the rez, be careful when you votes for blood quantums becuz most of your grandkids will not be eligible becuz they are marrying non-natives. Yeah, its sad when natives get denied their tribe.
@jcalderon1966 ,Yeah, thats sad,but if they marry non natives the grand kids should not be eligible for enrollment, were'nt they educated on them points?
Wow! I couldn't have said this better myself. Coming from oklahoma i live what your talking about. its sad how my fathers family is enrolled and my moms relatives were denied into the tribe.
"they're still our people" ...despite getting left out with enrollment. THANK YOU!!! Dear brother, you don't know how many people's hearts you have touched with that loving statement. That's what the White people do not comprehend..,.,family.
Tulalip is cool tribe. When I went to work for Eddie Bauer, they gave me 500 dollar's for work expenses. Much respect. Enrollment is a thorny issue. too deep for me to go into. good luck though bro.
they cashed the 112.00 check and not even a thank you or a letter.what a blow.i called and left a message to call me back but they never did.i think it has something to do with them trying to get federal reconition.what else could it be.now i will never have the chance to know dads family.he shouldn't be burning so many bridges while waiting on a something that might not happen.
for the monacan news plus alittle for a donation and i sat back and waited and waited and waited.about a month went by and i noticed the check never got cashed.i cancelled the check and repeated the process, this time sending a much larger donation, well about a week later i did recieve that subscription but no letter.
he didn't like to talk to much about it cause him being indian he had a hard time growing up.now its 2009 and dad has walked on and i feel alone.from 2005 till october of 2008 i admired my dads realitives from a distance through the internet.the chief is my cousin.i am a introvert by nature and suffer from bouts of depression,so its hard for me to reach out.i finely got the nerve to write to the chief.i sent pictures of me and dad and dads family and a long letter.i also sent a check
i was rejected from my dads tribe.he died last year in july,2008.i never knew my dad growing up.i didn't even know i was part indian.i looked different from my siblings!i found my dad in 1986,i was 26.and i knew where i got my looks from!but the years past and we drifted apart.on again off again dad and daughter relationship.and being young i wasn't into geneology,so i didn't ask to many questions about dads past or his culture.i knew some.
This one really hit my heart. My mother married into the military, I was raised overseas and didn't get the heritage and culture I needed to know who I was. I am now 32, and having been displaced for so long...I don't know my own people. Although I am an enrolled member, my heart needs to feel connected...when I tried, I was chastised for my children being so light. I can't allow them to be exposed to that...so how do I get us back to our family?
Good man, I love what you're saying!
