speaking of which the bonus part could've been when getting Mairo and Luigi to Rainbow Rank and Bowser to FInal Boss Rank on both files would unlock a bonus fight against Blizzard Midbus X and Dark Fawful X like the challenge node I think they would call it

each of the mario and luigi games had three thing in common the first thing is fawful. in the first game he was the villians apprentice, in the second he was the crazy shop keeper, and finaly he's the main villian. #2 a new form of bowser they had bowslet shroomser, and now dark bowser. the last thing is a star you never herd of like the bean star the colbate star and last but not least the dark star. tell me if you find anything that the games have in common

Here's an easy one that has been common with ALL the Mario RPG-based games: If you have to collect sacred items (star pieces, crystal stars, star shards, etc.) that will either open up the final area and/or prove crucial for the final battle.

However, I think the Mario & Luigi series has been the most unique about it.

I dunno. I don't think it really matters much since their overall stories aren't really related that much. There's only a thing here and there that are related. But PiT is still a pretty good game. I beat both of them, but I haven't played SSS. It doesn't really matter much if you go out of order, so do whichever you want.
