Esther was actually pregnant when she did this. Her director actually wanted her to dive from the helicopter, but she said no. Instead she had her old friend do it. Clever shooting, isn't it? It really looks like Esther did the dive. :)

didnt want to harm the baby? it wouldve been unsurprising for ester to have the baby during the dive, MGM style, come up out of the water with the kid on skis, lookin like van johnson!

in her autobiography, Esther Williams said that the only thing that she didn't do in this number was dive from the helicopter. Under normal circumstances she probably would have, but she was pregnant at the time and didn't want to harm the baby.
