@WerewolfofOblivion thats where you're wrong. many species do not have a nervous system complex enough to feel pain to the degree that humans do. and while it can't be proven, it's more than likely that they lack the higher brain function to percieve their own death in the way we do. so their degree of suffering both physically and psychologically is much less than ours. specifically octopi, a bite to the head will usually kill them. the "struggling" you see is actually residual nerve ticks.

The struggeling while they are wrapped onto the stick is not just nerve spams. Octopi are very deformable and they do survive that sort of thing. I doubt it feels particularly good. Every single mammal and bird is capable of the same pain reception as we are and every creature is scared as hell of death, it's in all of us, it's a basic primitive feeling. An acute fear of dying is something I'd call suffering.

Livestock are not eaten alive and are more humanely treated, although even they could still be treated more humanely
