This was one of my favorite jams.....the club that I worked would play this song every night, great memories,,,,,all the best to you Candi, thanks for your great voice.....long live classic dance music, aint no school like ol school.!
this song reminds me of my older sisters getting dressed to go out to the local juke joints with their boy friends in those classic shiny cars, in the 70's those are the good old days when simplicity was awesome , and real musicians existed , unlike that CRAP we have now. LELA JAMES and ANTHONY HAMILTON in my opinion are the only ones that can bring that soulful sound like this back to life........
Thanks Candi....ummmm my favourite bass line..umm Thanks and God bless you and your Family..that Voice was Jehovah Given!!!!! oh by the way when that song came out i felt there more to the person who sang it!! ahem...we had a party in Lagos Nigeria 1980.. i beleive... we danced around this song..thanks for the memories....da best party of my life! with Candi as "MC"
"Candi was a powerful singer and she sung songs all women can relate too"! "No longer a "VICTIM" today I'm a "VICTOR" in relationships"! "When you get older and more experience you learn from your mistakes"! "I was in "TEXAS" when this song came out and I love Candi Staton songs"!! "GOOD MEMORIES"!!!
throw back r/b for the day...brings me right back home where I grew up. I had a great childhood. Family at home and the radio station just playing captures a milestone in my life...how soon we forget where we came from...
Also spotlighted at the "Frisco Disco" on 6th street in San Francisco circa 1976.... Best strobe ball in the city at the time. Sylvester was a regular performer at this club! (Sweet memories for me)..
Memories of her live performance at Dreamland, San Francisco (circa 1979). She rocked the house from the moment the spotlight hit her up on the 2nd level, and she descended that stair case to a jam packed house. Will always remember that night.
When you stop Dancing and partying to this song and just listen to the lyrics, and what she's saying, you have a WHOLE NEW RESPECT FOR THE SONG AND CANDI STATON. The lyrics just get deeper and deeper.
I danced my feet off to this song in the discos in the 70s. The arrangement is primo and the voice is a force of nature. Love you, Candy. Thank you talented lady.
Candi left secular music to sing Christian music ... saw her on one of those praise the lord shows saying how she couldn't cope with the scene and decided to sing for the Lord. she came out of a gospel background..

There were so many great female voices back in the day, it seems like she kinda got lost. But she was always great and I remember my dancing days hearing Candi.
@nyc2b4me really? who among those i named have a voice as powerful and soulful as candi's? (and dont get me wrong- janet is my girl, and i like a lot of diana's stuff but.......)
@01tnql I discovered that Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross sang background on Candi Staton's "When You Wake Up Tomorrow". YEARS before Janet and Luther worked together on "Best Things In Life Are Free", and YEARS before she sampled Luther for "All For You". It looks to me like the industry was pushing Janet to be blessed (and Candi helped her career).
@SaintIzzle"fuck you for shitting on janet... ass clown" damn, whats up w/all the cussing and name calling? you do that to everyone you disagree with?? you know janet or something??? no. 1 i DIDNT shit on janet. ive been a HUGE fan of janet since 86, but,as she, herself has said, her voice is not that strong . if you disagree thats fine, but that childish comment was unnecessary. we can curse each other out, and call names all day, what would be the point?
Hi WarEagle, You know I have this on a great store bought compilation set the whole original 12" mix like this one, but I won't upload it because you already have a fab copy up, so I just wouldn't upload my CD w/o asking U 1st.
I did have it up at one time. This is so fabulous & I'm so happy you are the one who uploaded this Candi Staton! She's a great Classic talent. I'd go as far to say she could have been a real DIVA :-)
WOW-I've never heard this extended version. The one I have has a break where the instruments come back in one at a time (the disco 12 inch.) What a wonderful find. Thanks so much WE041!!!
Song gives me Goose Bumps of all the early times out with my freinds, Most of whom are so long gone... Sad and grateful 2 b here even if i am a Fukin old man. This is one hell of a great underappreciated song.........Very song I sing...
It's wonderful to have lived & loved. I've lost 2 but, in life, there'll be smooth roads & there'll definitely be some rough roads, yes it will. Enjoy life each & everyday that you have a clear mind & can get out of bed without help. Young hearts run free & never let anyone hold you down. Live life to the fullest so there won't be any regrets because when it's gone, it's gone. Don't make another sad to gain happiness, it won't work nor will it last. What goes around comes back around. Blessings.
I love old school music. My mom would get off work in the evenings & puts this wonderful lady on along with more great singers. I love, love the music from back then. I think it's the best because when I listen, it's old school 1st, 2nd & last. There's nothing like real singing & pure talent. Nothing compares.
I have always loved this song! I was 6 years old when this song was released but I clearly remember my mothers Saturday morning cleaning routine to this album...jammin' like it was nobody's business. I have been looking for this version. I will buy it as soo as I find it!
Jeesus, how I sang with this tune years ago. Then the allbum dissapeared, was probably stolen. Nice to hear it again, it's still a great song, and a memory-maker!
i love this song back in the Dominican Rpublic playing loud...omg it was the best song i've heard...love it...ythis woman is unbeliable........thumbs up!
I cant believe i found this! ibought this album after hearing it in someones home
. ran right out and got it. I had just bought a 1400.00$ sound system (can you imagine in 1978?) Dont know what happened to it, but i am going to get the vinyl again!
Darryl E Leftridge, RIP, my friend. This song is dedicated to all the nights we spent dancing and cutting up on Chicago's dance floors: Club Laray, Rialto, Stop and Drink, Clubhouse, the Generator, Jeffrey Pub, and on and on!
I love this version better than the other b/c at 5:23 and 6:14 "Every time I turn around, I'm back in love again" could be a reference to L.T.D.'s - "(Every time I turn around) Back In Love Again" released in 1977. Victim was released in 1978, so it's very possible that Candi ad libs to an L.T.D. single. I LOVE IT and I'm going to buy this version if it's available.
@neepl8 great call and reference!!! I totally forgot about the alternate version!!! + The Marvelettes "Hunter Gets Captured" reference is epic too!!! good call on the LTD!!! there are certain vinyl pressings of this version but the other version has a tighter groove and mix but this is very loose with great ad libs. Im sure the label was like "lets do a tigher edit for the discos and less r&b".
@neepl8 It also has "Doo do-Wop", the same background that the Jackson Five use on Stevie Wonder's You Haven't Done Nothing from Fulfilingness' First Finale...
This song reminds me of my mother and my mother-in-law. When they get together, all the oldies come out and the party gets started!!! No matter how young you are, you have to get up and dance!!
Back in 1978 this song was off the chain, this song had real soul and could relate what people go through when they in love.
My mother and my oldest sister loved this record, eventhough i was 11 years old when this record came out I remember it being a big party record with the blue and red lights, I really miss those days of good music.
I love me some Candi Station, Young hearts run free!!!
A hauntingly emotive torch song sweetened by a soulful rhythm. this song echos with heart breaking familiarity for any one who dared to love but found betrayal....oh yeah, im a victim too. pain has no gender preference so im gonna turn this up and absorb the medicine in the music..so sing it candi.."I try to occupy my mind, keep myself busy all the time..but the more i try to do, the more i keep thinking of you..ooh baby,oh well..i guess ill end up in the lost and found".-.can i get a witness?
She looks like she could kelis mom lol!!

Darryl E Leftridge, RIP, my friend. This song is dedicated to all the nights we spent dancing and cutting up on Chicago's dance floors: Club Laray, Rialto, Stop and Drink, Clubhouse, the Generator, Jeffrey Pub, and on and on!

What in the world makes a girl leave a guy all alone...
Another dude...is usually the thing
I became a victim of the very songs I sing!

The background singers jam on this cut.
I think this is the flip side of When You Wake Up Tomorrow.

@neepl8 Don't forget the other reference "the hunter gets captured by the game " Marveletts 1967.

Im sure the label was like "lets do a tigher edit for the discos and less r&b".
unique74muzik 1 year ago
@neepl8 It also has "Doo do-Wop", the same background that the Jackson Five use on Stevie Wonder's You Haven't Done Nothing from Fulfilingness' First Finale...

If you can find this CD, It has the entire mix of this GR8 classic disco tune :-). The CD is called "The Best Disco album in the Universe Volume 4"

@saalakhan - I am a witness ... I remember my mother playing this when I was a child. It speaks volumes.
