I've had bad experiences when traveling places too. However, if you are willing to judge a place based on a single experience, then you aren't as open-minded as you think you are. I'm sure people have judged you based on the way you look, just as you are judging Des Moines right now. I'm not from Des Moines, but I have had many good experiences when traveling there.
