amazing. simply amazing ha not easy to sing in the wistle register but they both manage it :) sumi jo is amazing gta lover her deffinatly the stronger singer of the two as she can do the fast passages and pure vibrato compared to natalie dessay but dessay does reach the higher notes :)
@nightmare11311 It's not talent to have a six octave voice...that's your genetics...talent is being able to use it to SING - to move people - to make them laugh, cry, dance...but people with huge vocal ranges are certainly interesting!
@nightmare11311 Really? Six octaves? Since i've listened to mariah carey, i agreed to say alright, four and a half octave is humanly possible, but six? this lill girl has a large tessiture for her age, but it's still three octaves, sorry!
@SsteinwayS iwth this... mariah carey is a joke and christina aguilera, nor in their dreams can reach those notes, far far away from where they reach (carey & aguilera)
Now that's a mean video! First showing Sumi squeezing out a high e flat barely holding it and the pitch being quite questionable and then comes Dessay going all the way up to an a flat above that seemingly with no difficulty at all.
@Lindow Not mean...I didn't mean to make Sumi Jo look bad...at that time I didn't have many modern videos of high notes, so these were some I liked and put together. But Dessay's pre-surgery voice was naturally more agile and higher...though Sumi Jo's is definitely a lot longer! :P It might interest you to know that Sumi Jo actually first started training as a mezzo!
Hey im a male singer just wondering i sing 1st tenor but have been playing around an am wondering how many other guys can sing this note? im trying to actully get this note myself and finding it diffcult anyone with a clue can help thanks.
@FallenPenance Hey...I'm not a singer, but, yes male singers have sung these notes. I have a countertenor/sopranist friend actually and he can get up to high A-flat above high soprano C. However, I must say...I would rather hear high notes sun right - like the examples here than squeaked-out high notes people do just for show. Singing and music are more than just above high notes though - one's singing technique, tone, musical intelligence and sensitivity as an artist are far more impressive!
@Lukejoker3 Yeah I know...someone commented on my video of Dessay's 3-octave range saying it wasn't huge...well...unlike SOME people she actually SINGS :) hehe
Both amazing but my vote goes to NATALIE!!!!!!!! My god that´s an unique singer!!!!!! OMG!!!! and then u have holywood ppl doing operistic movies and version that suck and have no singing talent or skills.! What a mentality!!!!!!!
@CantoSemper49 Well, before Dessay's surgery her high notes beyond soprano C was simply an extension above her other notes, so they are really sort of like singing any other note for her - after her surgery, her high e flats and e's sound much more like Sumi Jo's - more piercing, louder, and more forced...I'm glad Dessay's exploring the beautiful depths of her lower voice more these days, like with Melisande for example :)
Yes, but better than that they're good, hardworking people! That's what I admire the most...no matter how much talent they have it's through hard work and they know not to be selfish about it! Opera divas are such a myth...I have such great admiration and respect for opera singers!
That's for sure! It's something very foreign and different for most of us today, but the sort of athletic, superhuman, unamplified singing they do is just AMAZING. :O I love it!! :)
@azngamefreak46 yeah it sounds so different, but it's really awesome! I've studied it before and it helped make the music more understandable! Even without understanding it, the passion, beauty, and power of the music is so COOL :)
Well, everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but it's not all about the high notes! :) Although the message this video sends may say the opposite :)
Everyone can like what they like (it's all up to your taste), but Dessay is a very light colouratura soprano and she herself says she would love do big Puccini roles but of course cannot. I love her Baroque and Classical singing! It suits her smaller voice perfectly :) Sumi Jo has a beautiful lyrical voice!
It's from the same opera where the doll aria comes from ("Les contes d'Hoffmann" by Jacques Offenbach), but a different part form it. It's the second act finale ("Voici les valseurs...Voila! Assez, assez ma fille"). Many productions with Natalie Dessay in it are up on YouTube: watch?v=MlamWIxLIko, watch?v=xbKM87betQI, watch?v=9NXi4nV6XQA, watch?v=1S7xm0Osyjk.

The one with the crazy high A-flat above soprano C?! It's "Ombre légère" from the opera "Dinorah" or "Le pardon de Ploërmel" by Giacomo Meyerbeer. It's on YouTube! She sang it on her first (1997) French Opera Arias album.
really this was dinorah? i didnt recognise it!! yes ive heard her interpretation......i think dessay is the only soprano in this world that can sing an A-flat and make it sound so beautiful! almost like a chanting bird!
The beginning aria where we hear Sumi Jo and her loooong high E-flat is the end of the Lucia di Lammermoor mad scene (specifically, the end of the cabaletta "Spargi d'amaro pianto") by Donizetti. It's the first YouTube video I watched of her...and I believe it's still up!
Great rendition! She sang it really well. I've seen Lucia di Lammermoor a thousand times, with a thousand different singers, and I think she is one of the bests!
Sorry, but that's half true. The trird did indeed hit an F6 but the rest didn't go higher an E6 sharp. First of all it is inpossible to go beyond F6 with your super headvoice. Notes starting from E6 are usually done with the whistle technique, meaning breathing the notes out, like Mariah Carey does for example. With super headvoice you can reach to F6 at most and than you have to switch to another technique. All these singers just use headvoice. And G6 and A6 aren't so loud, they're very thin.
Use your ears better. They are rich and full high notes, with vibrato! I don't know much about singing, but they are not Mariah Carey high notes. Mariah squeaks out those "notes", if you can call them that when she "sings" them - Natalie Dessay, who SINGS the E6 and up is not squeaking them out and doesn't sound "thin" in this register. There's no difference between these notes and her lower notes. Most people are just not accustomed to the athleticism and astounding range of operatic singers!
By the way, the reason they are "not as loud" is because the high F is from a 1993 performance, the high F-sharp is from a 2000 performance, the high G is from 1995, and the first high A-flat is from 1993, so quality of the audio/video isn't great. The last high A-flat is from a studio recording, and overall volume is often tweaked in classical recordings to minimize the large contrasts between loud and soft.
It's high, but she was one of the few to use that, and consequently, not many other opera singers went that high. Her high notes, compared to most other singers, are bird-like and thin.
Mado Robin has a shrill timbre I find, but her high notes still sound like something! Dessay's overall voice is more full. I find Sumi Jo's a little shrill (the first high E-flat) when it gets higher up, but Mado Robin's high register was MAD[O] impressive!
by referring to Mariah Carey to explain coloratura high notes you obviously don't know much about opera, opera is all about full voice. You know what Renee Fleming the American soprano can hit with head voice? D above C above soprano C (D7) Her full voice she can hit G over soprano C, or even A. And no, I don't think superheadvoice is an operatic term, and people have been singing E6s and F6s for centuries when the so called whistle register was completely unused at the music of the time.
By referring to Mariah Carey, I'm showing that Dessay doesn't sound like her. Carey in that register doesn't even sound like singing. It's ugly.
Obviously you're a Fleming fan, as I'm a Dessay fan. So I think Dessay doesn't use head voice, you think Fleming doesn't use head voice, whatever. And I don't sing. So I don't know about voice types. All I know is that I love operatic singing!
Yes of course when you listen to a Dessay high note, since her French training, her notes are directed through the nasal passages and not over the head above the nasal passages, therefore the sharp, quick tone that belongs to Dessay. Nothing wrong with that, just differences in singing of different cultures :)
Dessay definitely does have that distinctive French sound, you're right! Her sound (especially high up, before surgery) is very cutting and almost piercing. It's very interesting and I don't think there's a lot of well-known sopranos currently living that have that kind of sound.
Yes, Damrau, Gruberova, Sutherland, Jo, Serra, well, every internationally famous coloratura soprano who's still alive didn't have French training. Dessay's the only one I can think of :)
... what about Mesple; is she still alive? She had the same piercing sound that Dessay did, only with a fluttery, uncontrollable vibrato that made trills indistinguishable from her regular sound.
Yes, Mady Mesple is still very much alive unfortunately she retired from the stage in the 80s so I haven't heard enough about her to beable to form an opinion :)
DAAMMMN indeed! And they're not amplified by microphones like pop stars are these days. That's why I think opera is sooo underappreciated - the singers have to do so much and they're under-appreciated by the public!
True...but Sumi DOES hold them or soooo long....but back before Dessay's infamous surgery, she went SOOOOO high! I love Dessay - she's amazing! Sumi Jo has a very interesting voice though too, so I guess everyone has different strengths....
(Wow...it took me a while to "decode" your "internet grammar"...)
i've worked with many great violinists in the san francisco symphony, and they all agree, none of them admit they can sound better than her on that high a register!
And they don't have to produce the notes themselves! Operatic sopranos are simply fantastic. My favourite = Natalie Dessay. When she was in her prime (i.e. before surgery) she could really sing those high notes!!
That's definitely getting in the atmosphere! But really, it depends on the quality of the note. If it's like a Mariah Cariah squeak, it probably isn't worth much (don't push your voice!). The high G in this vid starts at 00:26 and it's sung by Natalie Dessay. It sounds like an ACTUAL note, which is so incredibly amazzing considering how high it is!
Dessay is the queen of high notes. About Sumi Jo I think she has a beautiful voice, but her voice has a limit, when she surpasses that limit her high notes doesnt sound good.
I would make a correction: Dessay WAS the "Queen of the High Notes". After her surgery, she lost the higher extension of her range. However, her voice has changed and accordingly, she's delved into more diverse repertoire.
Most singers like Sumi Jo have a limit, obviously, and after that limit their notes will obviously decrease in quality. However, that's not to say Sumi Jo doesn't have some nice ones...she tends to hold notes such as E-flats for ridiculously long times, as shown in the video.
I think she still is, because up to this day no other singer has come close to her high notes, the day that happens there will be a new queen of high notes. About Sumi Jo, of course she has a very nice voice, but as I said before, her top high notes are not that nice, they sound like a squeak.
True. But aren't we forgetting Mado Robin, etc. who sang high C's above Dessay? Even though the quality of their notes weren't as great as Dessay's, they definitely were higher.
(Starting this discussion with you must make me seem like a Dessay-hater, which I am DEFINITELY not...)
Yes, Mado Robin sang higher, butsinging is not about how high you can go. Aside from that, I think Robin oversang the high notes and she put them where they shouldnt be.
About the "hater" thing, I actually hate the word "hater", because everyone use that word when they cant stand behind their words.
Dessay high notes were simply fantastic. I love the high notes of Streich and Hallstein as much as Dessays. Although Dessay, unlike Robin, had the capacity of integrate them into the "drama" not to make it sound as a showstopper.
As far as Jo is concern I think her technique and accuracy is overall clearer than Dessays, her breath control and dynamics are as extraordinary as Dessays high notes, having said that when she looks for volume and power in the high notes they tend to sound not so good
Well, you pretty much summed up all my thoughts succinctly there! :P I haven't heard Streich and Hallstein before...are they on YouTube? I might search them up. I agree with your comment about Robin for sure...her notes weren't artistic and beautiful, more like something else in her bag of tricks to throw about because she could. Jo is very technical, but in some instances I find Dessay more technically commanding, as in the Hamlet mad scene. Either way, Jo is a very accurate singer.
xD SO AWESOME!

Nope! Here are the notes the singers hit, in order:
#1 - E-flat 6
#2 - E6
#3 - F6
#4 - F-sharp 6
#5 - G 6
#6 - A-flat 6 (well, slightly lower actually)
#7 A-flat 6!
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
Sorry, but that's half true. The trird did indeed hit an F6 but the rest didn't go higher an E6 sharp. First of all it is inpossible to go beyond F6 with your super headvoice. Notes starting from E6 are usually done with the whistle technique, meaning breathing the notes out, like Mariah Carey does for example. With super headvoice you can reach to F6 at most and than you have to switch to another technique. All these singers just use headvoice. And G6 and A6 aren't so loud, they're very thin.
mage13011988 2 years ago
Use your ears better. They are rich and full high notes, with vibrato! I don't know much about singing, but they are not Mariah Carey high notes. Mariah squeaks out those "notes", if you can call them that when she "sings" them - Natalie Dessay, who SINGS the E6 and up is not squeaking them out and doesn't sound "thin" in this register. There's no difference between these notes and her lower notes. Most people are just not accustomed to the athleticism and astounding range of operatic singers!
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
By the way, the reason they are "not as loud" is because the high F is from a 1993 performance, the high F-sharp is from a 2000 performance, the high G is from 1995, and the first high A-flat is from 1993, so quality of the audio/video isn't great. The last high A-flat is from a studio recording, and overall volume is often tweaked in classical recordings to minimize the large contrasts between loud and soft.

Mado Robin hit B6 in super headvoice!
kuilyt258 2 years ago
It's high, but she was one of the few to use that, and consequently, not many other opera singers went that high. Her high notes, compared to most other singers, are bird-like and thin.
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
her high notes were thin? her B6 was almost as full as any of other notes you have in this video
kuilyt258 2 years ago
Mado Robin has a shrill timbre I find, but her high notes still sound like something! Dessay's overall voice is more full. I find Sumi Jo's a little shrill (the first high E-flat) when it gets higher up, but Mado Robin's high register was MAD[O] impressive!
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
By the way, the "third", "fourth", "fifth", etc. all till the end are the same phenomenal singer - Natalie Dessay.

by referring to Mariah Carey to explain coloratura high notes you obviously don't know much about opera, opera is all about full voice.
Drelnis 2 years ago
By referring to Mariah Carey, I'm showing that Dessay doesn't sound like her. Carey in that register doesn't even sound like singing. It's ugly.
Obviously you're a Fleming fan, as I'm a Dessay fan. So I think Dessay doesn't use head voice, you think Fleming doesn't use head voice, whatever. And I don't sing. So I don't know about voice types. All I know is that I love operatic singing!
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
Yes of course when you listen to a Dessay high note, since her French training, her notes are directed through the nasal passages and not over the head above the nasal passages, therefore the sharp, quick tone that belongs to Dessay. Nothing wrong with that, just differences in singing of different cultures :)
Drelnis 2 years ago 2
Dessay definitely does have that distinctive French sound, you're right! Her sound (especially high up, before surgery) is very cutting and almost piercing. It's very interesting and I don't think there's a lot of well-known sopranos currently living that have that kind of sound.
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
Yes, Damrau, Gruberova, Sutherland, Jo, Serra, well, every internationally famous coloratura soprano who's still alive didn't have French training. Dessay's the only one I can think of :)
Drelnis 2 years ago 2
...which makes her wonderfully unique!
SsteinwayS 2 years ago
... what about Mesple; is she still alive? She had the same piercing sound that Dessay did, only with a fluttery, uncontrollable vibrato that made trills indistinguishable from her regular sound.
forallyouknow 2 years ago 3
Yes, Mady Mesple is still very much alive unfortunately she retired from the stage in the 80s so I haven't heard enough about her to beable to form an opinion :)
Drelnis 2 years ago 4
I guess we're trying to say "alive and still singing on the stage"! :P

(Ha, I love Dessay waaay more as well. I just didn't want to be crucified by any hardcore Sumi Jo fans...)

Good call. Still, though, great video.

I've seen how...er...UGLY...some people can be about tastes in music and opera. Thanks for watching!

daamn....the power of the human voice
lupejudoka 3 years ago
DAAMMMN indeed! And they're not amplified by microphones like pop stars are these days. That's why I think opera is sooo underappreciated - the singers have to do so much and they're under-appreciated by the public!

da was class! u need a medal!:L
natalies r better den sumis. sumis r so pussed nd natalies r just so beautiful nd natural. nd natalies wer all higher:L

Hilarious!

They're going so ridiculously high!!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
i've worked with many great violinists in the san francisco symphony, and they all agree, none of them admit they can sound better than her on that high a register!
imsleepyanddead 3 years ago
And they don't have to produce the notes themselves! Operatic sopranos are simply fantastic. My favourite = Natalie Dessay. When she was in her prime (i.e. before surgery) she could really sing those high notes!!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
I guess raising their hands can help them raise the notes higher.
sweet09toblerone 3 years ago
Maybe!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
amazing!!!
ViolettaValery25 3 years ago
Agreed!!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
I guest they have to sing them the same way.
tonyman2c 3 years ago
Not really. It's harder for some than others and their tones and timbres vary greatly...
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
could u please tell me from which aria was the last note of this video?
killerbunny123123 3 years ago
find sumi's other high notes, actually she deserves even higher.
blueviolin1 3 years ago
I don't like them as much as Dessay's. But her really looooong E-flat deserves mention here.

WHOOO! stratosperic coloratura baby! :D
RaWrZzZz 3 years ago
Stratospheric colouraturas indeed!!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
oyus<3 i'm unsure if i'm stratospheric. My highest is G above high C. any idea?
RaWrZzZz 3 years ago
That's definitely getting in the atmosphere! But really, it depends on the quality of the note. If it's like a Mariah Cariah squeak, it probably isn't worth much (don't push your voice!). The high G in this vid starts at 00:26 and it's sung by Natalie Dessay. It sounds like an ACTUAL note, which is so incredibly amazzing considering how high it is!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
yea its not natalie dessay stng but its stronger then mariah careys, and full voice, non whistle. o.o wewt i win! *dance* xD thanks!
RaWrZzZz 3 years ago
Dessay is the queen of high notes. About Sumi Jo I think she has a beautiful voice, but her voice has a limit, when she surpasses that limit her high notes doesnt sound good.
nicevidbro 3 years ago
I would make a correction: Dessay WAS the "Queen of the High Notes". After her surgery, she lost the higher extension of her range. However, her voice has changed and accordingly, she's delved into more diverse repertoire.
Most singers like Sumi Jo have a limit, obviously, and after that limit their notes will obviously decrease in quality. However, that's not to say Sumi Jo doesn't have some nice ones...she tends to hold notes such as E-flats for ridiculously long times, as shown in the video.
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
I think she still is, because up to this day no other singer has come close to her high notes, the day that happens there will be a new queen of high notes. About Sumi Jo, of course she has a very nice voice, but as I said before, her top high notes are not that nice, they sound like a squeak.
nicevidbro 3 years ago
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
Yes, Mado Robin sang higher, butsinging is not about how high you can go. Aside from that, I think Robin oversang the high notes and she put them where they shouldnt be.
About the "hater" thing, I actually hate the word "hater", because everyone use that word when they cant stand behind their words.
nicevidbro 3 years ago
Dessay still reigns as Queen of the High Notes in my/our books though. Her notes are/were crystal clear and absolutely stunning.
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
Dessay high notes were simply fantastic. I love the high notes of Streich and Hallstein as much as Dessays. Although Dessay, unlike Robin, had the capacity of integrate them into the "drama" not to make it sound as a showstopper.
As far as Jo is concern I think her technique and accuracy is overall clearer than Dessays, her breath control and dynamics are as extraordinary as Dessays high notes, having said that when she looks for volume and power in the high notes they tend to sound not so good
Wotan123456789 3 years ago
Well, you pretty much summed up all my thoughts succinctly there! :P I haven't heard Streich and Hallstein before...are they on YouTube? I might search them up. I agree with your comment about Robin for sure...her notes weren't artistic and beautiful, more like something else in her bag of tricks to throw about because she could. Jo is very technical, but in some instances I find Dessay more technically commanding, as in the Hamlet mad scene. Either way, Jo is a very accurate singer.
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
On youtube you can find a great Lakme's Bell Song by Hallstein.
Wotan123456789 3 years ago
Excellent. Thank you!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
Wow I found a lot on YouTube of her. How did never hear of this Hallstein? She's pretty amazing!
SsteinwayS 3 years ago
Holy crap. I can hit those notes, but not with THAT much power. I just kinda squeak. I guess I'm more of a mezzo than I thought.
