McDonalds is the crack of fast-food. Check out "Super-size Me", directed by Morgan Spurlock. He has *physical* *withdrawals* after eating only McDonalds for every meal. It's insane!
@NekoChanMaasta -- I could be mistaken, but I believe that it many people are offended by it because it is the same as stating: "You like fried chicken...because you are black."
@DestroyaDoll Well I for one wouldn't take offence at it. Stereotypes will always exist, it's like saying to someone 'you like blue because you're a boy' or 'you like tea because you're English'. Those things shouldn't be taken offensively, as they aren't intended to be offensive, most of the time they are said jokingly. If you take offence at small things like that then people are bound to keep saying it just to wind you up. Don't let such things get to you, just take it with a pinch of salt.
I watch One Piece a lot so I'm used to the really rude/informal Japanese lol
If I was talking to a Japanese person I would bother to learn the more polite phrases first, but most of the time I stick to using the good old Pirate speak because I'm used to it and it's fun to sound tough lol
If it came down to it I would probably replace my 'Ore' with 'Boku' or such (watashi is a bit of a mouthful) and probably switch my 'Anta' for 'Anata'. Even though it's not as fun lol
My German friend often say " I can't live without sausage because I am German" even though she doesn't like it. She says that to make Japanese laugh, but her host mother doesn't have the sense of humour and now she has to eat it every day:)
@tuberrrrrrful Nope, completely aware of how many times whites ask asians "Where are you from? NO, where are you REALLY from? It CAN'T really be Maryland!!"
@milkjamjuice I've never had that "Because You're a Foreigner". But i'm Irish & I don't drink, so that's always a fun one. I have had a few "go home", I respond with "I am going home".
The fact that you're not used to summer is because... ( maybe ) your homeland didn't have with Tokyo's Intensity? Then you not liking would be RELATED ( not the only reason, X D ) to your Homeland.
Don't get me wrong, I'm Swede and I fucking hate summer also while almost everyone here loves it...
I'm not saying "Gaijin Dakara nee" but it could be related XD
Oh what's my poin in writting this anyway? I'm such a jerk. I'm sorry.
@xxYdoxxx Well, considering I'm originally from Alabama which has both hotter and more humid summers than Tokyo...that wouldn't be the case XD; To be completely honest, I've almost lived in Tokyo longer than anywhere else and well...hot and humid summer just suck! I mean, wouldn't you agree in general that mild summers are more tolerable than ones that are 35 degrees C and 80% humidity? :D
Nice one. i usually use the "外人だからしょうがないだろう"" I am a foreigner, what do you expect?" whenever i do something wrong in japan...fairly often i can assure you....not entirely sure it is correct but it stops people launching your favourite comment at me.
People said to me "You probable don't understand this because you are from Japan, but …" not only once in The States. I wasn't offended nor frustrated though. It all depends if the reasoning is correct.
@dzunku1 I don't mind if people tell me "You probably don't understand this because you are from the US..." at all. I think it's rational. I do mind when it's things that have NOTHING to do with my race or nationality; It's as stupid as when Americans say "Black people love fried chicken." Being black and liking fried chicken have no correlation. Fried chicken is just delicious, w.
@milkjamjuice I was just kidding. I agree with you 100%. But I also implied that Japanese rarely talk straight like you. I love chicken karaage by the way. Is this rational? hahaha
I understand your frustration. But it's just that Japanese people are not used to living among different peoples. We (I'm a Japanese) had been living (almost) only among ourselves for thousands of years, it's just recently having lots of foreign people around. You guys have thousands years of experience !(including history of Europe obviously.) And Americans also say "Polish are like this, French are like that." Isn't it the same thing? Anyway I know we are too naive. We'll have to learn.
@coupcoup1184 (1/2) Thank you for the comment, because I think it is a very good comment. But here is how In see it: I don't think giving your culture an excuse to do something "because we've been doing it that way for thousands of years" is a good idea. Here is my reason: I am white. My race has been killing non-whites for thousands of years because they believed they were inferior...will continue in next comment...
@coupcoup1184 (2/2) So whites have believe non-whites were non-human for thousands of years. In the US, rights to protect non-whites only started being passed in the 1960's. So between the 1960's and now in my country the attitude has (mostly) changed. It is no longer socially acceptable for us to kill other races (or anyone) and it has only taken about 50 years which is relatively very short. We can't hide behind excuses saying "well this is how we've always done it."
People have used that with me too! So annoying!!! I think it's sorta like an easy way out. Like could've asked you why you love McDonald's cheeseburgers or hate Japanese summers. Then, they could've learned a lot more about you in the process. But saying "外人だからね" just about shuts down the conversation, doesn't it?
I know I'm not supposed 2 dwell on my complaints, so it doesn't surprise me when people reproach me a bit when I need catharsis and need 2 bitch a bit. But I notice that the foreigners who most vociferously tell me to shut up if I bitch even the tiniest bit are foreigners who speak no Japanese, have never been 2 Japan and who simply know they really love anime or AV or some crap like that. I love Japan, but for this type of gaijin Japan is an infallible Valhalla or something.
Ohh ome on! They just trying to start a conversation, you know they love to talk. And you are foreing. The Japanese are so simple they act like little kids you are foreing so you love Love burgers, any child can figuire that out. haha
I might be feeling the same way when they say to me "'cos you're from Osaka. (きみは大阪出身だから)". It just irritates me a lot. That's not because I'm from Osaka, I hate being stuffed in a metro train. That's not because I'm from Osaka, I got outraged on an over-congested highway. It s**ks itself...
Yes, Totally got your point. However I must say (As grown up in Japan ,spend 15 years there) THEY HAVE NOT been changed LAST 20 years. ( Their attitude for the foreigners, I mean)
And I assume those will not be changed NEXT 50 years. That`s the clear and obvious message I received from them, and motivated me to move back to the state after high school. ( Because you are foreigner)
I was told so many times even I went throw pre-school to high school right there.
Soz milkjamjuice 様 i mean i would actually say that too if gaijin can't eat salty stuff in the morning loll likeeee hmmm rice, fish, miso soup and stuff xD "外人だからね" 笑
The problem is, they just don't see what's racist about that. They expect it's the same where we're from because they know very little about our home countries (and thus assume we know just as much about theirs). Where I come from, this would be the equivalent of saying "Because you're a nigger." which would subsequently lead to the beating of your life (and the cops would be on THEIR side).
Man, I love cheeseburgers too.. Wait--I'm a foreigner too.
This reminds me of an instance a few months ago where I was net-shopping at Forver21 (dot JP, mind you) during class, and the girl beside me glanced at my screen and said "hee, gaijin ha netto de kaimono surunda." (WOW GAIJIN DO THEIR SHOPPING ONLINE!) I died.
@Ciaela Online shopping? That's a new one. XD I recently got asked if geta hurt my feet more than it does a japanese person's, to which I could only reply, "I'm not another person so there is no way to compare..." Or maybe it was just a disguised remark on my HUGE GAIJIN FEET.
@milkjamjuice IT PROBABLY WAS. I go to a school where I'm the only white person and the other students have no idea how to "talk" to me, so I often get questions like, "I hear in America they eat cereal every day!" and I say, "That's neat, but I am from Canada and I don't really eat breakfast." and the conversation just dies. dead. gone.
I get asked about "life in Japan as a foreigner" all the time on Youtube, but I've never had the balls to make any negative videos about Japan because I know
@milkjamjuice The standard troll comment will be, "If you don't like it go back to your own country." etc, so I admire you for being able to bitch freely. Next time someone asks me about life in Japan as a foreigner, I'll let them know about this video ;)
@Ciaela I know exactly where you're coming from. I do get my share of "heat in the kitchen," as well as hateful comments but I just don't give two flips about it anymore; it's a great thing that has happened to me. BTW I loved your video about Japan being safe or not for foreign women. Very creepy experience you shared.
might i reccomend you strike whoever says that next as hard as you can? prefferably while wearingh Iron knuckles... or use something heavy, like metal dumbells :) and dont forget to aim for the head :)
I am Japanese and I agree with you. Japan hasn't quite internationalized yet like America. So I can understand why people say stuff like that to you. However that doesn't mean that they are not to be blamed. I think what you need to do is to educate them. Tell them what you've said. i know it is tough for you to live in Tokyo, don't give up and I know you will find someone who would understand you.
You have to understand that Japan is an isolated island country.....where people are not used to foreigners and are so used to everyone being the same around them. It is sad but its the reality of it :( but I think its going to change with time as Japan becomes more progressive and international
@bakhandr41702 Yeah, I hear the "isolated island" country reasoning a lot too. I partially agree with it because of what happened during the Edo period here, but there are other countries that are islands that don't seem to have this phenomena. Like Australia. I am aware the Japan has a homogeneous population and has only been relatively "opened up," since 1863 but I still stand by my point saying my interests and dietary habits being solely based on the fact I am not Japanese is a bit silly.
I don't think I have commented anything that can be misunderstood as you said. My comment is based on comparison between my life in Japan as a native and my life in foreign countries as a foreigner.
@milkjamjuice have you tried using 外人だからね on the people who keep telling you that? if you know they do not like something that most Japanese do, you should just tell them 外人だからね as a small form of self-serving justice. you can also invite them to the states and give them a dose of their own medicine.
DISCLAIMER!!!: this could lead to an occupational promotion to being a Class 6 Jerk.
you do bitch indeed but you did it in a fantastic way and i can tell i got your point. and "because your a foreigner" is as good reason as "because i said so". wish you , not to hear tha never again
Reading your comment response to hiragana3 made me realize that I should study my kanji, vocab and grammar before my presentation and final >.< Damn.
In my opinion, I'd say the phrase "because you're foreign" is not as offensive as it sounds, depending on context. I mean here in Hawai'i we kinda do the same thing to tourist or people that move here and everyone responds differently, but thanks for the video it was very interesting and entertaining.
what? I don't think cubans would dislike tokyo summers... humidity and 40 degrees?!, it's all we latin americans dream about lol
I'm really curious about horse meat... but I feel bad for the horses... Btw, I think the foreign problem is not about japanese people, it's about the world. I've lived in Chile for 15 years and still when I feel cold in winter people say to me "it's because you come from a warm country", but it's not that, I just hate winter... so.. there you go XD
I love your honesty in this video. I get that gaijin dakara ne too, but then I explain (for the billionth time) that my Japanese-American family grew up with most of this Japanese-only uniqueness. Gee, how amazing that American's know what sushi and chopsticks are...ne?
I wish we had the big-ass Macs, etc here in North America, but that must just be because I'm not a foreigner in Canada. But yeah, I hate humid summers too (in fact, it's pretty humid today).
Correct: Gaijin in the Japanese mind is non-Japanese as if that classifies all people and there are really two types of people on Earth... Japanese and everything else. You would think that the xenophobia from the WWII era would have died by now.
And I agree with you. I don't like the sense of the word "foreigner" or "gaijin", either.
People who say such things to you are just not used to or ignorant of the world, living in the small country where everybody else than Japanese is "gaijin".
But, I think similar would happen when I go abroad and tell people I love sushi, or, tell them that I don't like sushi. I think they would expect I love sushi because I am Japanese.
@jp10IamMeNotU Actually, I don't think they would in America at least. Americans consider personal choice very important, so they usually won't assume what you like and dislike. They might mention sushi a lot, but that's only because it's the only Japanese food that they know.
Also, Americans usually don't define people by the group that they're in. Just because you're Japanese doesn't really mean anything, from the American point of view.
My sympathies.. I get that from my family back in Puerto Rico.. they say "ah.. because you're American" when they can't find anything else to say.. then I go BACK to the USA and they say "ah.. it's because you're Puerto Rican".. I swear they say it because they feel the need to say something.. /facepalm My sympathies.. stupidity doesn't know any bounds..
What I mean when I say that is "A foreigner is a foreigner is a foreigner." It doesn't matter here what country you come from. The reasoning "gaijin dakara ne" is used as a wiiiiiiiiiide basis here.
@TheROFLMAO1993 Hell yeah! There are tons of white south africans. I have even heard stories of white south africans coming to the US for school, and they check the box "african-american", but are told they can't check it! Even though they TRULY are african!
heheheh, niiiice. I've thought about spinning it that way and I'll DO it if they're a friend so it usually stops their speech then makes them think about it for awhile. For people I don't really know I don't bother because I figure it's a lost cause from the start.

I would just say "gaijiin dakara nee janai da! Ore wa ore daraka da!" if it was getting annoying
Or "Iee, anta ga Nihonjin dakara da!" just to confuse them lol

Tell them what you've said. i know it is tough for you to live in Tokyo, don't give up and I know you will find someone who would understand you.

Mega Macs do exist in North America (or atleast for sure in Canada), they're just called "Double Big Macs". not as exciting of a title.

You have to understand that Japan is an isolated island country.....where people are not used to foreigners and are so used to everyone being the same around them. It is sad but its the reality of it :( but I think its going to change with time as Japan becomes more progressive and international
bakhandr41702 9 months ago
@bakhandr41702 Yeah, I hear the "isolated island" country reasoning a lot too. I partially agree with it because of what happened during the Edo period here, but there are other countries that are islands that don't seem to have this phenomena. Like Australia. I am aware the Japan has a homogeneous population and has only been relatively "opened up," since 1863 but I still stand by my point saying my interests and dietary habits being solely based on the fact I am not Japanese is a bit silly.

Correct: Gaijin in the Japanese mind is non-Japanese as if that classifies all people and there are really two types of people on Earth... Japanese and everything else. You would think that the xenophobia from the WWII era would have died by now.

hiragana3 10 months ago
@hiragana3

This is a good video! I liked the way you talk.
I think they would expect I love sushi because I am Japanese.
jp10IamMeNotU 10 months ago
@jp10IamMeNotU Actually, I don't think they would in America at least. Americans consider personal choice very important, so they usually won't assume what you like and dislike. They might mention sushi a lot, but that's only because it's the only Japanese food that they know.
Also, Americans usually don't define people by the group that they're in. Just because you're Japanese doesn't really mean anything, from the American point of view.
Tzadeck 9 months ago
@Tzadeck Thanks for the reply.
