  • OK.....it took me 4 years to watch this, but I found it fascinating! I remember Ike when I was a kid. He scared the crap out of me. I think he knew my Uncle Bud Fransen....(who by the way passed away about a month and a half ago)

Always enjoy your videos Dave!! Beth

  • belt and suspenders, yah he must have cut a few trees before this one!

  • hatein on the hatein. the man is 71 he has forgotten more than i know about cutting trees and i do my fair share love to see the old guy still at it. i wouldn't fell a tree the same way either but he got it done and it fell where he planned. that's what counts. Go Ike :-D

  • NICE JOB!!! I GREW UP USING THESE SAWS, I CAN'T HEAR MUCH, BUT I KNOW THEY CAME IN 80,72, AND I THINK 66?? THAT'S WHEN YOU COULD KNOCK ON SOMEONE'S DOOR, AND CALL EM' OUT IN THE STREET, AND FIGHT, GET IT OVER WITH, AND EITHER BECOME FRIENDS, OR JUST LEAVE IT LAY...NO LAW INVOLVED, I AM THANKFUL FOR GROWING UP IN THAT ERA!! NICE TO SEE A 71 YEAR OLD STILL SAWING!!! I AM TOO, BUT NOT YET 71, GREAT VIDEO!!

  • ikes the man

  • Ike's got a bad habit of pushing that monster saw with his hip, thats so dangerous if that saw kicks he wont have much of a hip to push with.

  • I like Ike

  • I have an old McCullough Tember Bear (that still runs) w/20 inch bar and a 100ft cable. But I used a 2 ton come-along instead of truck. Better safe than sorry if your dropping a trees around houses, shed, etc. Even in the woods, it sucks to have a tree lean back on you and pinch the bar. Sometimes they don't always go according to plan. At 51 now and I hope I can still pick up a chainsaw at 71 and still chase trains at 75. Ike is AWSOME :)

  • American Elm?

  • nice saw is ike doing good in his health

  • @slylumpkin he has passed away:(

  • @4inches4u : Ike died ?? is it truth ?

  • Ike damn good job. It is nice to see a gentlemen of your age still show the younger generation how to really fall a tree. In 18 years as west coast faller i have only met a few good fallers, most of the were quite on in years. That old saw runs great hope someday the grandkids can go cut a tree with it. Very professional drop.

  • gear drive saws are pond saws and are designed for cutting logs in water.. they should not be used for general wood cutting as the chain does not stop turning at idle speed..

  • great video, got a small 14* poulan recently, did the whole bar chain oil, gas etc today

been watching stuff like this for a bit, there great help.

  • you cant beat the old hand, cut a few in his day?i bet.

  • what saw is that?

  • RIP Ike

  • WELL DONE Ike! :-))

  • Good job, well planned, and executed with care.

  • go get em ike.

  • Great video. Nice work Ike, but I do think that stump could have been a bit straighter. Just kidding. cheers

  • HUGE notch, and THEN you walked UNDER it! LMFAO...YOU, Sir, have my unqualified and eternal respect. Nice drop!

  • Truly, he 'survived' another fall 'his' way. For somebody going into the industry or thinking about it....look for another vid of proper procedural falling. Otherwise old timer, my hat's off to ya! I have a 2100XP that was bought in the late 70's. It would cut two trees (maybe three) in the time it took for that one...the point is that "old saws" aren't necessarily slow.

  • really good job for 71 but this wasnt this year, good job ike, hows he doing??

  • oi i wanna just get dis stragiht oookkkk but it sed in da wateva dey call it da ummmmm info or wateva but it sed face cut in highly bold form sooo i thought der was gunna be sme face cutted but wtf der was not a single face cutted i dnt get it m8

  • Well done... for 71 almost perfect...

  • As a tree worker I have to say we definitely have different ways of getting the same result now days, but it is the result that is most important. I hope I can still run a 24 pound saw when I'm 71! Much respect.

  • Been comin back to watch this alot- it`s very inspirational. As a lifelong woodcutter and burner, I`ll keep admiring the guy.

  • For what the heck do you need the truck ;D

  • Ike your a trooper, hope im still dropping trees at your age mate!

  • Respect !

  • E UN CACACIOS BATRAN!EU AM UN HUSQVarna 371 xp merge f bine!

  • the first problem occurs as soon as he starts cutting; if that saw kicks back, his leg is gone. This is not "instructional", but simply, wildly dangerous.

  • I agree that he was putting his leg in danger in the first part.

  • i guess you burn firewood

  • good cuting man

  • ike you da man. cecel is the coolest bad ass old car ive seen. keep the videos coming

  • Great job! I have the same saw. A littie bit shorter bar- 24 " I think. I`m looking for the clutch and I`ll get er done! You really have to be a Man to use these Homelites. The gonads have to be in-tact! God bless.

    the fanger

  • Great work Ike, hope to see you felling more trees if your health is ok. Cheers Matthew from Australia.

  • ike nice one i take my hat of to the older generation of tree workers

  • Cleaning up after the mess is the fun part. Atleast it is for me. I hope i'm still running a chainsaw at 71!

  • best wishes ike and keep on keepin on

  • if i were ike i would have made the youngins buck and stack that old oak!!!

  • He is so cool.

  • nice one ike! bet you have forgot more about tree felling than most of us! all the best .

  • Ike said to thank you for your comments. He appreciates that, more than you know.

  • thanks ! all the best ike + all you guys.

  • Dude you killed yourself with that notch, only need 1/3 penetration,I bet the top angle cut on the notch took ten min.Sweatin your ball off I bet!

  • Not at all. Gear drive saw never bogs, but is slow and methodical. See the description box for Ike's reasoning behind the notch.

  • Some of us never grow old or grow up!

    To much work!

  • Yeah, well we didnt do it for fun, as the tree was dead and I think it would have been way more work to have to rebuild my garden shed and also cut up and remove the tree. This was necessity. And I agree with you, if you play with toys all your life, you wont grow up, or get old. LOL

  • you go Ike, great video, reminds me of the days with grandpa and his heavy Homelite saw, if ike can sling that saw around for as long as it took for this tree then he's a bad man, tell Ike I like the video very much and never mind the aholes that don't know.

  • Thanks very kindly. I will tell Ike. I know he will appreciate it.

  • Well done Well done!

  • Thanks kindly.

  • IKE you are the man. 71 and still cutting, that's what I hope to be doing when I'm that age.

  • Thanks very much.

  • Love the sound of them old saws

  • Yes. Me tool Thanks.

  • Ike did a fine job! But ya shoulda saved some of that wood for your fire pit. (It wasn't built by the time this tree was dropped.....I'm just sayin', woulda been an almost endless supply of recreational firewood once it all dried out.)

  • Haha. Thanks Jeff. Im looking forward to that too.

  • It was fun to watch, having cut down many trees with a cable tied to my old Chevy, I like Ike's style. I was heating with wood and had some ground along the river. The trees would grow leaning towards the light provided by the open water. A lot of them would have gone down the riverbank with the old Chevy providing some positive influence. 8^) I had a few that the truck could not pul, it did not sling shot it though, just slid the old beast backwards. Shake Ike's hand for me. 8^)

  • Thanks very kindly. Sounds like you have a time or two too. Great I appreciate your comments. I'll tell Ike.

  • I think the Super 80 Homelite is older than 1974.

  • what is the song called----i know its boot scootin boogie but i've been looking for this version forever whats it called

  • Its called Boot Scootin Boogie, by Brooks and Dunn.

  • Haha, my grandpa still uses his old homelite. He still thinks it will outcut the new says idk. I have always used huskys but now we have bought a few johnsenreds and they are pretty good.

Good memorys from a homelite though.

  • Thanks kindly and happy sawing.

  • He got it done!!! Good Video THANKS for posting,, I got an old heavy gear drive McColluch,, But i don't use it anymore,Got old and those new light weight Husquavrna's are more like it now,,I enjoyed it Thanks Again

  • Yes sir. Thanks kindly for your comments. Its great to hear from someone who recognized the saw.

  • ..NEVER atach the pulling rope to a car, if the (way heavyer then your car) tree falls the wrong way it WILL throw your car into the air. Use a 'Tirfor' cable winch for crying out loud.

  • Haha. Ike just updated his comments in the description box. Please check it out. Also gear driven saws are very powerful, but slow and methodical.

Ike says he has never dropped a tree where it wasn't supposed to go and was city contracted for 12 years to precision drop trees in yards in the city.. He says it is different than dropping trees in a forest and he had to learn different techniques.

  • not true. done it hundreds of times. its all about geometry and physics. if the rope is high enough a child can pull it over even if its leaning the wrong way. my ten year old daughter would be happy to demonstrate. Normally however I do use a 4x4 truck ;)

  • nice one buddy .

  • Thanks.

  • Thanks kindly.

  • sarebbe stato bello vede quella motosega taja in 2 quel fijo di puttana di vecchio!

  • Like most people said the face cut was too deep. Also the truck pulling the tree tight while he's cutting the backstrap is a bad way to go. But the worst was how he was standing when he was cutting, with the saw ready to kick back into his waist. Not to mention the neighbor standing there in the kickback zone. That they got it down is good but there was a lot of dangerous unecessary risks taken that no pro should be taking.

He should forgo the rope and do a humbolt, and cut to the hinge.

  • True. Well trying to change an old codger like this at 71 years old is impossible. Plus this was his last tree he ever cut and ever will, so I was lucky to get him out to do it for old times.

  • Oh well. We all do things sometimes the way we shouldn't but usually we get it done. And he got it done that's for sure. It was a big tree and he put it right where he wanted it and no one got hurt. Plus he visibly was comfortable handling the saw so he obviously has some experience with it.

Just tell him for me that change is fun and it keeps us young.

  • Ike is not well these days, and if nothing else your right, but I am glad to have this video.

  • Haha. Ike just updated his comments in the description box. Please check it out. Also gear driven saws are very powerful, but slow and methodical.

  • I am no logger but I have run a chain saw or two in my life. I have rarely seen any good come from the hook the car up to the tree and pull in the direction you want it to fall. I have seen thousands of dollars of damage come from this type of felling.

  • A sugestion.. use a longer wire or a cheaper car and it would help alot :P

  • Why? It came down perfectly.

  • Ayeee

  • wow!!!! flatlanders and chainsaws do not mix!!! these yahoos are sooooooo lucky old ike didn't kill himself or sombody else.

  • scary! bad notch, back to tree, brush in the way. they are all lucky they arent dead...yet! notch should never be more than 1/3 through the tree. notice the hinge did not break until a couple seconds after the tree fell, i guess they were safer that way anyway. and sharpen your chain jeesh!

  • what is up with that Notch Cut, little much. i think the saw needs a new chain or someone who can use a file. then when he cut the Notch cut and he walked away from the tree with his back to it. Dangerous, Very Dangerous, lucky he is alive. scares me when i see that stuff, i should know im a logger and you never do that

  • where do you log?

  • The only logs he drops are in the toilet.

  • lolololololololool omg i f**** pood myself ahhhhhhhhhhh ahahahahahaaha omfg oh shit oh man ha wooo wooooooooo ok wooh ok im alright oh wow

  • @truckieone a deep face is often a good idea when pulling or if its a headleaner. anytime there is a lot of pressure on the face side

  • Ike, I love your white hair hard hat. I wish I had one like that so people wouldn't think I'm bald. Was your chain in backwards? I could have cut thru it faster with a hacksaw.

I believe your wedge was to far into the trunk And whats with that back cut? Nice saw though! What brand is it? Have a good day Ike!

  • Haha. Ike just updated his comments in the description box. Please check it out. Also gear driven saws are very powerful, but slow and methodical. Thanks for the comments.

  • Ike's face cut size doesn't really matter. What matters, is right after he cut it, he walked away with his back to the tree, like it was no big deal! Classic!!

  • Haha. Check out his updated comments in the description box from this week. Thanks for the comments.

  • Face cut was too deep.

The biggest risk of barber chair was from the pick-up pulling early.

Dead wood does not 'chair readily so even with an over anxious drive they were probably OK.

Gear drive and age means the cutter still has good fitness.

  • See the updated comments from Ike in the description box. He had a reason for the cut like he did as he explains.

  • Great video...reminds me of watching my dad when i was a kid cutting down trees! Fun to watch and brings back good memories. GOOD JOB IKE !!!

  • Thanks. See the updated comments from Ike in the description box.

  • Nice job Ike. Nice saw too!

  • Thanks, We appreciate that.

  • when youre pulling you want a big face like that. look in any training book. otherwise its going to barberchair on you. ive been cutting pull trees for years and the guy that taught me was ike's age and had logged for 50+ years. There was nothing wrong with Ike's cutting. and the homelite? they're beautiful old saws. i love to cut with my dad's every now and again

  • Ike had a reason for that cut, and just this week updated his comments in the description box. Please take a look.

  • it was good to see uncle ike. you have any more with the rest of the "household"?

  • Thanks. Not much, other than the train and Model A videos which are very popular.

  • Nicely done, that saw sounded great, I'd be terrified of using one without a chainbrake though lol. Some good firewood there, hope you made good use of it.

  • Thanks. I am sure Ike will like your comments.

    Got lotsa wood.

  • Way to big a facecut, but it went donw without killing anybody, nice old saw too.

  • Ike just rewrote his comments in the description box, if you would care to take a look.

    Thanks.

  • hey there.. i love how this 70 year old man can weild a 30 pound 34 year old chainsaw like a pro...i definately respect that...we heat our house with wood... so i do this pretty much every other weekend so that we never run out im only 17 and my dad is in his early 50's its pretty hard on him so i do the majority of the work.. he drives the truck and pays for gas and coffee lmfao...it doesnt take long for someone to scoop up a pile pof free wood does it :P

  • Thanks very kindly. I appreciate that. Wood goes fast when the free sign goes up. LOL

  • The saw is not a pos, its slow cuz it is a gear drive. If you look close you cans see it throws chips just fine.

  • True. See Ikes updated comments in the description box.

  • classic logger with a classic saw. Although I agree with others that it wasn't by the book, but the tree is down and nobody got hurts, so always a good fall. Love the saw!

  • Thanks. Im sure he would appreciate hearing that.

  • Haha. Ike just updated his comments in the description box. Take a look and thanks again.

  • but good job cutting it

  • Thanks.

  • that piece of shit cut slow enough

  • See the comments to the right, as Ike just updated them.

It is a gear drive. Plenty strong, but slow.

  • wow!...he handles that saw like a wizard waves his wand!..lol

    great stuff :O)

by the way..great music too!..garth rocks!!

i used to sing myself, and i did a great many covers of garth's...fantastic artist :O)

  • Thanks a lot.

  • im suprised that this guy has lived long enough to grow grey hair the way he uses that saw

  • Please read his up dated comments in the description box.

  • i would have cut the tree down for free for you just as long as if i got to keep the wood.

  • Haha. Thanks.

  • Nice demo.. I think the wedge was a little big though, the saw would have got stuck if it wasn't gear driven. What did you do with the timber?.

  • Thanks. We have a grass, leaves and wood dump at the edge of town, so small stuff went there.

I also put a sign out that said Free Wood, (after cutting it all up) and it was gone in 1 day!

  • now this is real AMERICAN wot wot hehe

  • Thanks much.

  • The movie was great but I'm not so sure this guy really knows what he's doing. First off the cable only needs to be just a little higher than the cut so the ladder business was not necessary. It looked like the intitial cut he made was deeper than 1/3 of the tree. If you are cutting a tree without a cable that's a no no, it can cause the tree to tip the wrong way. Finally, most people cut toward the notch straight across, so this guy had extra work to flatten the stump after.

  • Ike has just updated his comments to the right. Please take a look.

  • seriously? the higher the cable the better. if its too low you'll pull the bottom out from under it and it will go over backwards. and a real cutter cuts "humboldt style" with the pie out of the stump. and if the tree has a cable on it you DO want a deep face cut to help prevent barberchairing (splitting) as it falls. Like someone else said: Ike's probably forgotten more technique than most of us will ever know. it was textbook perfect.

  • my dad has i think a 20 yr old stihl 090. tht saw is huge. tht saw has nvr bogged dn. but his other saws do.

  • Thanks. I agree.

  • OK thank you for reassuring me. i try not to thnk of iraq and smog much, but when i do i almost feel suicidal.

  • you say in the description that the chainsaw is a 1974 homelite chainsaw, making it around 33 years old (1974-2007). but you also say that the chainsaw is 34 years old, meaning that we are living in the year 2008. I do not agree with this and this sort of thing really upsets me.

  • Your upset???? Gee I wonder what you must think of Iraq and Smog, if a little detail like this upsets you?

The point of the video was that is an old chainsaw and we used it to show it still worked. Relax.

  • is there any chance the saw is older than the operator?????

  • Haha. Not much.

  • Both those guys are 70 and retired. Tree cutters was their profession.

  • SpiderGem1, this is an antique and is gear driven chain, not weak.

(That means it has power, but not fast) It won't ever bog down.

  • Thanks. Your right.

  • Comment removed

  • See updated comments from Ike in the description box. Its a gear driven saw, not weak, just slower, he says.

  • Thanks dave. Was great to see the "Old fart" workin' Mark

  • Haha. He just re made the comments in the description box for those naysayers. LOL.

  • Well, I never saw anybody cut a tree down where I live, so was quite entertained. Looks like you got lots of hauling to do now. LOL A very interesting and informative video. 5 stars.

  • Thanks much.
