Both versions of this song are great.  Cash's version is more of a reflection of the hard times in his life. It is more melancholy while Diamond's version is sad in the beginning but more positive toward the end as he picks up the pace and looks to the possibility of finding another true love. They are both tremendous artists. They both sing from the heart.

Not to say Neil isn't a great song writer and a singer but like all great song writers there is always those songs that they can't sing themselves. Cash though is such a legand that he even took a U2 song and made it better.
